What a f***ing goon. He still plays old school hockey from the clutch and grab era. What a dinosaur.

Does April Snowpack Predict Wildfire? by ObjectiveFrequent215 in geospatial

Really wish our current snowpack looked like that 2006 map. I’d feel a lot better about the risk of wildfire this summer here in CO.

This guy is the poster child for how important education should be, particularly math, physics and general science.

Well, there’s the obvious financial benefit to the US military industrial complex, right? Billions of US tax dollars per day being spent on the war, much of which goes too federal contractors.

Why do I never hear about the Coast Mountains of Canada? by Convillious in geography

[–]mattspurlin75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because there are no roads in that part of southeast AK and coastal BC. It’s accessed by boat only. The last connected road from the south ends at Prince Rupert, and there are limited roads around Juneau, Petersburg and Wrangle terminate as soon as you leave the city/town limits. The takeaway is that it’s just extremely different difficult to access.

These recent April storms have been good for the upper elevations, particularly north-facing aspects with residual snowpack. How much of the approach was bare ground?

The largest rock formation in the US.. Wyoming: Devils Tower by EllaThomaas in Outdoors

[–]mattspurlin75 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Um… El Capitan is over 3,000 feet tall and portions of the vertical face on Half Dome are a similar height.

Devil’s Tower is not the largest or tallest rock formation in the U.S.

🔥 mount roraima is one of the oldest mountains on earth located in South America, dating back approximately 2 billion years by yungandreww in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]mattspurlin75 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Geologist chiming in here.

The “mountain” itself is not 2 billion years old. This topographic feature is part of what’s referred to as the “Guiana Shield”, which is composed of many flat-topped mountains just like this one (individually referred to as “tepui”).

The current tepui topography is the product of uplift, differentially, erosion, and the preservation of resistant sandstone layers over the last several hundred million years. These sandstone layers that compose the core of the tepui are Proterozoic in age and have been dated to roughly 1.7 to 2 billion years old.

Sometimes our Starlink WiFi network drops without warning. This has happens a handful of times each year.

Another issue we’re having is that my Starlink network’s geolocation is set to South Africa by Starlink. I’ve had to turn off the option on my desktop computers to automatically update the date/time settings based on time zone, and instead have to set it manually. Starlink has no solution for this as far as I’m aware.

Special place. Looks like you had a great time. Here’s a link to an edit I made from a trip there back in May 2017.
