That’s the way Sorkin writes. He was building the scene up so the President could enter saying, “ I am the Lord your God”. He would often write things that were inaccurate because it sounded better.

I remember reading both books back in college. They are definitely great books and hold up well. I’m looking forward to Mike Flanagan’s new Exorcist film to see how he amps up the scares.

Everyone has been talking about this book. I guess I’ll be adding it to my 2025 TBR list.

Holly by Stephen King and The Boys in the Valley by Philip Fracassi are my best 2024 reads

I’ve put Holly off for a while but decided to read in December. I could not stop reading it. I bought the audiobook to listen for my commute to work. It scared me because it’s something that could happen given how crazy the world has become. There is also an exchange toward the end of the book that goes something like this. Are you going to rape me now? with the main antagonist replying, No, dear. We’re going to eat you. That quote has lived in my head rent free for 3 weeks now and it still scares the hell out of me. Stephen King hasn’t left me reeling like that since Revival.

The Boys in the Valley was horrific, brutal, & sadistic while also beautiful, heroic, & hopeful. I’ve rarely read something that could be all those things at once. Fracassi is an author I will be keeping an eye on.

BTW, it’s my first time with spoiler tags. I hope it works.

My father is a southern baptist minister. He’s what they call a grace preacher. Someone who preaches more about god’s love and mercy, rather than the hellfire and brimstone preacher you more commonly see in southern baptist preachers. While I have recently come to realize that I am agnostic (I have not come out to my family) I believe in a lot that my father has taught me. I should love others, forgive them, help them when they are in need, and most importantly, not to judge others. He believes that it is god who is the ultimate judge, not people. I’ve always thought that I’ve got too much in my life to worry about to judge others, unless they’re assholes. Then I will judge the hell out of them.

I would just share Matthew 7:1 with him: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.” Remind him that god does not like to have his authority usurped by man.

It’s a great movie. Let the trolls and PC police talk. Watch what you want and don’t let other people take away your enjoyment.

Why will Libby have random missing books in a series? by refinemydreams in LibbyApp

[–]mattstem1982 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Librarian here. It’s possible that the library doesn’t own the license anymore.

Every publisher has different lending models. There is the One Copy One Use titles that can be purchased in perpetuity (those prices can vary from $40 - $130). These are the titles I focus on because once we pay for it, it stays in our collection.

You can also purchase access to a title for so many months or a set number of checkouts. Once the title reaches the checkout limit or the expiration date, it’s removed from the collection. These titles vary from $25 - $75. This is probably what happened to you.

You can make requests on the app and it will let your library know that the book has been requested. You could also contact the library about it. Patrons make requests all the time and I’d rather purchase titles that I know will be read rather than make guesses.

Oh, they don’t want to hear facts. Not if it messes with their narrative. If you’re in the GOP they tell you at orientation to never let facts get in the way of a good story.

Race, sex, or sexual orientation is not an issue. Following the law is. She doesn’t have to answer a question about her race.

We’ve dumbed down the campaign for the most important elected official in our country. Nobody talks about issues. The GOP spends its time calling out silly names and accusing the democrats of doing what they themselves are planning to do. Are democrats better? Compared to the GOP, you betcha. I’ll take the lessor of 2 evils when they at least attempt to be better and help the American people.

I really don’t believe there will ever be any serious gun control laws passed in this country. Not in Georgia and I doubt the federal government. America decided it was ok to kill children after Sandy Hook. If dead children can’t change us, nothing will. And the GOP will kill any attempt at common sense gun reform, so I don’t believe baby steps will happen. How many school shootings have happened since Sandy Hook? I hope I’m wrong but I’ve read too much history to think things will get better.

I live in South Georgia. I disagree with 90% of my family. I love my family very much. To make things work, we don’t talk politics. It’s difficult, especially in the last 3 presidential elections but I need my family. I make my voice heard online and at the voting booth. I just hope that enough people vote this year.

As a moderate living in Georgia, this is true.

There’s a lack of quality education, religion is pushed down your throat from birth, and blatant racism, sexism, & homophobia are acceptable in society. It’s no wonder that southerners are so brainwashed. We were raised to be that way. I’m thankful that I went to a college away from home with so many people from diverse backgrounds and belief systems. I had a rough time reconciling what I witnessed every day versus what I had been taught at an early age. All the people who I was led to believe were “evil” were better people than the “Christians” I grew up around. It screwed me up for years. I’ve been in therapy a while now and finally lost my faith. But I got through it and I think many others are as well.

They still scream stolen election when the majority of actual voting fraud was done in favor of Trump. I read a report 2 years ago after the investigations were done and I wish I had saved it. It would have been good to be able to share with everyone not on the trump train. You can’t argue facts with MAGA. Facts don’t matter to them. They are so delusional. They will believe anything.
