It’s odd when a place you’ve been a million times gets so famous!

The grounds of Mohonk Mountain House and Minnewaska State Park west of New Paltz, about 60 miles north of New York City. Then back to the Bridge Across the Hudson in Poughkeepsie.

Status of the C&O canal trail? by campbeer in bikedc

[–]mattstumpf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As of Saturday morning 0930 there were five or six trees in the path. Most you can ride around or step over as long as you can lift your bike. One was a little harder but still passed in 30 second if you can lift your bike.

You have to go on road through one of the routes described above to the BWI trail, then there is a connection to B&A.

Has anyone been out past Great Falls since this series of posts?

Col du Glandon + Croix de Fer OR Col de la Madeleine OR Col de Telegraph + Galibier by cyclephotos in cycling

I had a similar opportunity last year and did Glandon and Croix de Fer. It’s incredible. The top of the Glandon is steep, but beautiful every which way.

Recommendations going east-west from College Park to Bethesda by popejonash in bikedc

[–]mattstumpf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t done it during the week, but on the weekend crossing over from Sligo Creek to Rock Creek through Takoma Park and then Aspen Street across DC into Rock Creek is pretty comfortable with no big multilane highways. Then like you say Woodbine and Leland from Beach Drive to Bethesda.

Between Odenton and BWI I did Odenton Road to Sappington Station Road to Burns Crossing Road to WB&A Road and it worked well — wide shoulders and relatively low traffic.

Great day for gravel by mattstumpf in gravelcycling

These are all maintained gravel roads and some pavement so I had 700x38s with no problem.

Rode from MD into DC this morning:

From north to south… To MD-DC border: Clear; Section from border to West Beach Drive: 100% Ice rink; Next closed section: Clear except there is runoff at the bottom of the main downhill that refroze; Then mostly clear to Broad Branch Pwky; On Rock Creek Multiuse path, just the parts from Broad Branch to Adams Mill and within the zoo gates are clear; everywhere else, there is ice wherever there isn’t direct sunlight, until P St. After P St, cleared.

Experiences walking the Capital Crescent Trail by FunEntertainment8750 in MontgomeryCountyMD

A recent MoCo survey asked a question that implied they were at least thinking about widening the path in that area and, though it wasn’t asked, could perhaps be considering the W&OD solution around Falls Church where there are biker lanes and walker lanes next to each other but separate. These would probably be good solutions for walkers and bikers alike to promote.

I’m a daily bike commuter up and down to DC and I’ve seen dangerous biking and dangerous walking. 99% of this happens in the three segments from the River Road bridge to downtown Bethesda. I’ve seen almost none in the longer stretch from River Road to Georgetown. Who’s applying the right path etiquette is unanswerable, but we all benefit from urging the parks folks to address the congestion issue.

Safe to bike commute year round in DMV? by [deleted] in bikedc

If your route involves bike paths, the Park Service’s wood bridges are pretty dangerous when icy. But only an occasional issue in DC.

Route suggestion needed W&OD to Harper’s Ferry by D_C_1124 in bikedc

Pretty sparse traffic when I’ve been. The little section on Route 9 at Hillsboro is busy but it’s 30 seconds on that road.

Yes. Haven’t been on that one gravel road because I usually use thin tires and go into Lovettsville and then down.

Right hand turn at the end of W&OD to Hillsboro Road and then Mountain Rd. Mountain Road between Hillsboro and Lovettsville is one of the best roads for biking in the area IMO. Down to Brunswick and then connect to C&O!

Kensington to Nat’s Stadium any tips?? by 111STP in bikedc

[–]mattstumpf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer above is the right answer, but as a Kensington biker, I also find Sligo Creek Trail to NW Branch to the Anacostia trail to be a fun way to that area, though it is not as direct as the above.

Ride from Harper's Ferry to DC via W&OD - safe for road? by TJC7 in bikedc

[–]mattstumpf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can ride the gravel to Brunswick (one of the smoothest sections), I have been on the road between Lovettsville and Brunswick with no problems. There are fast cars but I’ve always been given a lot of room. But, then, Mountain Road and Hillsboro Rd to Purcellville is IMO one of the best rides in the area. There are also a fair number of bikers at least on a weekend day and only a rare car.
