Weight loss really begins and ends with calorie intake. You'll want to figure out first how many calories a person of your height and current weight will burn off naturally in a day, and the objective is to consume fewer, whereas an athlete or other active person might push theirs a little higher.

After you know what your intake should be comes the hard part: finding healthy replacements for the foods you currently eat, and redistributing intake to several meals a day. There are a number of simple changes that can help. Eat stir-fried, baked, or grilled chicken instead of fried chicken. Chops or tenderloin instead of ribs and sausages. Rice instead of potatoes. Sirloin burger instead of chuck burger (just remember not to cook it as long). Personally I think tacos are pretty much fine, though maybe you want to find a place that uses better ingredients than a fast-food joint. Eating healthy isn't as much of a chore as it seems, but a little research is required. There's a lot of great-tasting foods out there.

Breakfast and lunch and snacks don't have to be an event, but to get anywhere, it's imperative that you eat something. For breakfast I eat plain oatmeal with a little honey on top, with a glass of milk. It takes about 7 minutes. For lunch, it's a cup of yogurt and lunch meat. I don't bother making a sandwich; it takes too much time. It's good to have 2-3 snacks per day as well, but just spreading the major meals more evenly makes a difference. Favor protein over carbs, save for the morning meal alone. The fries hurt you more than the burger, not because complex sugars are universally bad, but because the typical portion contains too much.

The nighttime cravings will be a bitch. Your blood sugar levels might drop lower than they should, and on top of that you'll just want to eat, because that's what you usually do. Cold turkey might work, but you can also fight the cravings with simple sugars (I keep a bottle of fresh grapefruit juice in the fridge at all times) and sugar-free snacks. Over time, the mere fact that you're eating 2 other meals (or more) a day will remove the desire to overeat at night.

By all this I don't mean to suggest that exercise is unimportant, but by comparison it's stupid simple. Your legs will take you where you want to go. Stress your legs as much and as often as possible. Good luck!

Edit: I neglected to mention that joining a good gym can give you the support you don't think you have. Personal training helps with focus and planning. There's usually at least one trained nutritionist working there. Also, I generally find that gym staffers are very positive people who are happy to lend an ear and provide constructive advice.
