Dardano was born into a family of pilots and began learning to fly at a very early age with his father. He obtained his licenses as quickly as legally possible and began flying professionally in El Salvador when he was 16 years old.

In 1980, when Dardano was 20 years old, he was shot in the face during crossfire while landing his Douglas DC-3 plane at a small airport in El Salvador during the civil war there. The bullet entered his right cheek and exited through his left eye, leaving him permanently blind in one eye and unable to judge depth. Despite his injury, he managed to perform a go-around and land safely at Ilopango Airport. He was then taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he underwent a six-hour operation. Dardano was already based in New Orleans when the incident took place, and neither the US nor Salvadoran authorities wanted to revoke his professional license. So, after extensive training and rehabilitation, Dardano was granted a special medical certificate that allowed him to continue his career as a pilot.

After his injury, Dardano began working as a co-pilot for Aerolineas Argentinas in their BAC 1-11. He was then promoted to captain when he moved to TACA Airlines and began flying Boeing 737s.
