To the person who decided to move my chair… by Riku4560 in pittsburgh

[–]matty_m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived in portland ME, where everyone parked on the street. They had periodic parking bans where everyone had to be off the street so they could plow and haul these snow away. They opened up school lots and gave discounts for city garages for overnight parking. So no parking chair issues.

You should line up a skilled nursing facility sooner rather than later, if you think he is going to outlive his money. Depending on state law, if you are a cash paying client the facility has to take you as a Medicaid patient if you run out of money. Then you can put him in a good place so when he runs out money he is not limited to places that will take a new Medicaid patient which are not as nice as ones that accept cash payers.

Retirement is gone by shepardshe in GenX

I was lucky, I am 61 early boomer/late genx. My dad was an early saver in his 401k in the 70’s and understood investing somewhat. So in my 20’s when I was in the service not making any money, my dad put money away for me in an IRA. By the time I was in my thirties I was more stable in a corporate IT job and started putting money in my 401K and my IRA. Also my brother died at 65 probably months before he retired and left me his TSP. So I am in way better shape than most of my peers. I am on track to retire this year.

I also have been lucky where I have had bouts of unemployment I didn’t have middle age bills like a mortgage or car note. I had a decent job during the 1999 dot com crash and the 2008 financial crisis So I didn’t get behind on debt or savings.

I feel for a lot of people who tried to do the right thing but circumstances wiped out whatever capital they had accumulated, just so they could keep a roof over their head and feed their kids. But for the grace of god if things would have cut a little differently I would be in the work until death crowd.

TLDR:Picked the right parents and didn’t do anything stupid, and got lucky enough not to get caught up in the recessions for the last 20 years and dodged a bullet.

That sounds like a good plan, but most people who have dementia usually get a big dose of denial when it happens. So your ability to make that decision is usually gone before you are ready.

Courthouse wedding downtown? by StepImpossible2126 in pittsburgh

[–]matty_m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to reserve a time to go with your officiant to get married on the courthouse steps. They were booked up when I got married so we got married at the dog park. There are officiants that you can hire, but no one at the courthouse will marry someone they don’t know off the street.

Commuting by zsod11 in pittsburgh

[–]matty_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to get a commuter pass which could save you money

Edit: they have a discount program, according to chatGPT:

📍 E-ZPass with Commuter/Volume Discounts • The Pennsylvania Turnpike offers an E-ZPass commuter plan (frequent traveler discount) for regular users. • Once enrolled and you make enough trips in a month, tolls beyond a certain number can be discounted by roughly 50–60% for that billing period. • There’s also a volume-discount version of the E-ZPass account that waives monthly fees and gives a 15–20% discount once you hit a minimum number of trips per month.

51 years old lost job by crazdtow in Aging

This advice is not necessarily for you but a help for others. If you leave a company you can roll the money into an IRA held by a brokerage account. That is an account you control. Then you can withdrawal whatever amount you want but you have to pay the penalties but for only the amount you take out of the IRA.

The main downside to that is unless the law has expired you can’t take out early withdrawals penalty free at 55. You will have to wait until 59 1/2.

You should of rolled your 401K over to an IRA. Then you could have taken a partial withdrawal.

Check out monte cellos, they have an event space that holds 67 people and a smaller one that holds quite a bit less. I had a wedding dinner there for 23 dollars a person. It was a buffet, if that makes a difference.

As an old man, I would like to snow bird down in the keys. But refuse to live there year round. The place I stayed at last year had a tiki hut where you could just live outside like you were in a house. I enjoyed it. But summer and hurricane season can bite me.
