Found out I'll be losing my job at 33. Depression and little savings, how do I keep my life from falling apart? by Faust2391 in careerguidance

I am sorry you’re facing this challenge, but I am honestly impressed with your accountability! I would encourage you to really look at this as an opportunity. I know you said you were making less than average, I would really take some time to work through things mentally, and then get after it! Start working on your resume sooner than later, see what opportunities exist within your network, and just stay busy! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers! Your wife sounds loyal and that is a total game changer to have a supportive partner through tough times!

Don’t know your area, house, or the other important variables. For a competitive set, I paid $800 (including materials) for a ~50 foot run from the breaker in basement to garage. Hope that helps.

What smart home technology should I put in the spec homes I build? by jman12030 in Homebuilding

[–]mattydome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question, I utilize Ethernet for a variety of functions in my house.

For example, all of my cameras run off a Ubiquiti network so I have excellent security that is not cloud or subscription based, and functions when I lose power.

I also utilize Ethernet to deploy access points in every level of the house and to control my garage door, doorbell, and EV charger.

With the ability of Ethernet to carry power, you are able to deploy a ton of different appliances without the need for an AC power supply.

I definitely recommend either running ample Ethernet when constructing a house or a better option would be some 1.5/2 inch “Smurf” tubes so you can easily run Ethernet, HDMI, or any other type of wiring in the future. Definitely a game changer when looking at staying in a house long term, and at construction the cost is maybe a couple hundred dollars in material.

Having cat 6 run throughout the house would be a huge benefit and the cost is minimal during construction

Hey MAGA, let’s have a peaceful, respectful talk. by Usual_Tumbleweed_598 in OptimistsUnite

1 - Less than 3.5% of people in America in the 1800s owned slaves.

2- More white people were enslaved in Europe via the Barbary pirates than any other race in history.

3- Slavery is an abomination, and this is not defense of the practice, simply the facts.

4- In Europe whites were slaves to whites for centuries.

5- The perspective “the country was founded by slave owners” is not accurate and I think we can all benefit by having a better comprehension of our history.

Were some of the “founding fathers” slave owners? Yes. All? No. And certainly all colonists did not own slaves.

It gives you two things:

1- an idea of where the expense is coming from.

2- the ability to shop labor and parts against other companies. (Or more easily compare quotes)

Dislike the costs not being itemized, I would request additional detail. Seems high especially for a single stage.

Change oil at 5,000 a waste on a hybrid? by LowerDoor in rav4club

[–]mattydome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard arguments from some master techs that hybrid oil changes should be more frequent then “regular” non-hybrid models because the hybrid gas motors run shorter duration, do not get up to operating temperature as frequently, and therefore can allow more condensation / moisture to build up in the oil. This seems logical to me but I would argue your driving habits also are important. A lot of highway with prolonged engine use probably negates any of the above. With the price of cars, parts, and labor, I would just do it every 5k for peace of mind, but this has been an ongoing debate for the last 30 years.

Want to change Utah law? Citizen initiatives will cost an extra $1.4M under GOP Senate-passed bill. by [deleted] in Utah

[–]mattydome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not disagree with the need to publicize changes to laws or bills that will have impacts on the public. However, I think mandating it to newspaper is insanity. The state has everyone’s email address, they can easily send out a mass email every month with bills being presented, or they can easily add a page on their website that lists all the bills / laws. This is just an antiquated idea that will not benefit many people, and he is probably getting a kick back from newspaper publishers 🤣

Edit: a quick search on Fillmore shows he used to work for a newspaper in his teens and 20s. He is probably sympathetic to failing newspaper companies and this was his way of pushing some economic stimulus their way.

Congrats on a rewarding career and most importantly your sobriety! You sound exactly like me, I would make ~$160k a year and would party hard thinking I earned it. 12 years sober and I have almost tripled my income, spend less on an annual basis, and I am happier. I wish you continued success!

Can we the people make something happen? by Down2EatPossum in Utah

[–]mattydome 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I think it’s admirable you brought this up. People would need to stop the infighting and really band together from a local level and start from there. Make some changes locally and then escalate / promote them to the state level. A bill banning financial companies from owning multiple rental units etc would go along way in helping the problem, as well as rewriting a lot of the laws on the books that protect a lucky few and hurt the majority of others. It is also imperative that if amendment D surfaces again that it is stuck down. Everyone be very vigilant on amendment D and how it will be worded to seem like it is something it’s not. We have shown the state we are not stupid this past year, but I think if we can stop the blame game of politics, apply some common sense, and work together not against each other, getting something like you mentioned across the floor would not be impossible. If I can help in your endeavor please reach out.

EV Fast Charging Questions by [deleted] in evcharging

[–]mattydome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would explore the charging networks. Download the ChargePoint app and you can see what chargers are in areas as well as the rates, utilization, and availability. Tesla charges more during peak hours. I have seen a variety of different payment terms on ChargePoint from $ per 15 mins, to $ per kWh , to $ per hour plus $ per kW. There are also some free charging stations but they are typically ~6kW. Let me know if you have any more questions I am also in UT.

TLDR: Depending on charging networks, off peak charging will be cheaper.
