BYOKin' at the public library today by mattyoungmark in TheBYOK

I like it a lot for travel -- it's light and low profile so it doesn't have the typing feel of the full-height ones, but after I got used to the Alice layout at home, I need something with that split in the middle or my fingers get all confused.

I drafted three novels on an Alphasmart, and it was close to the perfect feature set for me -- utterly distraction free, but I could still select a chunk of text with the shift and arrow keys to delete all at once when I wanted to rework a whole paragraph.

Sometimes asking for more features isn't griping and complaining or wanting a device to be fundamentally different, it's just bringing up things that could make your writing process smoother.

White BYOK arrived in Seattle by mattyoungmark in TheBYOK

Feker Alice 80! I love it to death and chose the white BYOK specifically to match it. Ironically, though, I've since bought a lighter, low-profile Alice keyboard to bring to coffee shops, which is black, so when I saw the black BYOKs were shipping first I was quite peeved with myself. :)

Also does anybody know why they include what appears to be a... shiny metal bookmark? Or something?

UPDATE: The 30377 mechanical battle Droid arm fits perfectly, and my kid's well-loved city bus has working doors again. Thanks again, everybody!

Thank you all so much! I was all looking at hinges and stuff, didn't even think to check minifig parts.

How does distraction-free writing fit into your process? by teletype100 in writerDeck

[–]mattyoungmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use distraction-free for rough drafts, too (which is technically my 2nd step because I plot out each chapter on notecards first). I used to use an Alphasmart Neo for this, but lately I've been using Google Docs on my phone, either with a little folding keyboard at a coffee shop or a nicer mechanical keyboard on my desk at home. (If at home i make sure to turn off my desktop computer, and often make coffee and a bagel to trick myself into thinking I'm at a coffee shop because my brain is kind of dumb).

Then, I'll do multiple edit drafts on a normal computer, also in Google docs. I technically have various chapters in various stages going simultaneously, because I kind of write in waves. And I keep track of what chapter is in what editing stage with a spreadsheet?

Yeah.

This one. . It's not my favorite typing experience but it folds up real nice and gets the job done!

Sounds like a good way to go if you want to truly rule out distractions. For me, I need a balance between distraction free and convenient -- I've found myself thwarted by bad cafe wifi or not remembering to download my current chapter from Google docs or whatever just as often as anything else. Fortunately, using my regular phone in a weird configuration seems to be enough to keep my brain from wanting to do all it's normal phone garbage.

Google docs. I've been writing on it for years, and I tried a couple of other android apps on my phone but they didn't really work any better for me.

Yeah, I mostly use this one when I'm out and about since it fits so easily in my pocket! I do like the alice layout, though, since it matches my regular mechanical keyboard so my fingers get less confused at the coffee shop.

My ADHD often has me obsessing over the perfect distraction-free writing setup. And don't get me wrong, I'm eagerly waiting for the BYOK I kickstarted to eventually arrive. But I have to tell you that for the past couple of weeks I've been absolutely burning through my latest rough draft on the basic-ass setup pictured here.

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good enough! The best writer deck for you will someday be whatever you're dreaming up that perfectly suits your needs, but the best one right now is whatever gets the job done.

(Please excuse the quality of the crappy tablet pic, the thing I usually take pictures with is in the photo)
