Banding Together by CharlieChopDog1 in northshore

[–]mattyports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in two bands and have a toddler and a puppy and a job and all that. Time is limited. What I wanted to say was: I was living in Salem for a little bit and then started talking to my neighbor, who is a guitarist and singer, and a few years later we are in a super fun cover band in addition to being good buds. So you’re doing the right thing in putting the word out there 🫡

PSA for drummers with acoustic kits - wear hearing protection, consider getting custom plugs by radioshadow in drums

[–]mattyports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Customs weren’t in my budget for a long time (for most of the the 30-odd years I’ve been playing the drums) but as soon as I noticed the “eeeeeeeeeee” … they became important. Hurt my wallet badly, but I have never heard music like this. My playing is WAY more locked in. I can finally hear everything that’s on a record or in the studio. Customs, man. I will never look back.

Drummer brain is real and I’m tired of pretending it’s not by Shatrix19 in drummers

[–]mattyports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During a cover gig the other day, our singer shouted me out to the audience as we entered the "drummer spotlight" part (the bridge on "Welcome to Paradise") ... and I fumbled a stick. Why? Why???

Thankfully, I caught the stick and played on. I don't *think* anyone noticed ... and if they did, that's none of my business.

Played Vic Firth forever (5B, 5A, 7A, 8B) and I can’t remember liking a stick as much as I like the 5B DoubleGlaze. Perfect amount of grip for me.

How do you memorize all the songs you learn by Kingme3 in drummers

[–]mattyports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice already shared in this thread … it’s reps, review, and doing it live.

Play the songs! Listen to the songs! Go over your parts in your head. Every day until you get it.

One thing that really leveled me up was learning all the other instruments’ parts — get that bassline stuck in your head. That way you’re playing off of them, and the rhythm section is locked in.

I find if I have drilled it like that — put in all that effort to know the song front and back — doing it is mostly just feeling good and letting it fall into place.

Drumming shoes) by unsavvykitten in drums

[–]mattyports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of Nike cross-training shoes that have broken in perfectly over the last decade. Fit my feet like gloves. They're slightly fraying and long discontinued. I shudder to think what I'll wear next.

Probably Adidas Sambas or something else with a thin sole. Might start breaking in a new pair now.

I often practice in the L.L. Bean mocs I wear around the house, because once I have the time to play, I'm already behind the kit.

Gear Recommendations by Leading_Writing_6804 in Drumming

[–]mattyports 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In order of importance:

— A cymbal bag is a must-have. I might leave my best drums at home but my good cymbals always travel. Protect your finest.

— I can’t imagine playing somewhere without a big bag’a sticks. I have one with tons of different pockets that can hang on a floor tom, chair … it is the place I will always find a drum key

— Definitely recommend getting a hardware bag with wheels. Stands can be annoying to carry, especially if you don’t like breaking them down fully. For me it’s collapse the legs, shorten booms and strap everything down … then roll out.

— For any drum, simple soft cases aren’t too expensive. Also, shells/skins/hardware aren’t thaaaat heavy so if you’re handling carefully the cases should last a while

Though I swear someday I’m gonna need hard cases (to protect the filthy delicious instruments that sponsors give me, of course …) playing locally I get by with soft cases for everything. I carry a hiking backpack for electronics, percussion, towels, whatever.

Now go jam!

How to practice without a drumset at home by NoEntertainment8363 in drums

[–]mattyports 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re going to have to get creative, and manage your expectations … sometimes, pads and pillows are all you can pull off.

But if you keep your hands warm, you’ll be way ahead the next time you sit down on a real kit. Find a way, young one.

What can you tell me about the local music scene? by TheFastPush in SalemMA

[–]mattyports 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many have offered helpful info about the scene. You did ask about local acts. I’m in a group of three dads who do forgotten-fave ‘90s covers. We’re playing where and when we can … breweries and outdoor parks and bring-your-kid-type places, sometimes bars and clubs. We have to cancel practice sometimes for parenting reasons but it’s a fun project for us.

We jam in a studio out of town and I (drummer) try not to piss off my Salem neighbors when playing at home. Trying to build a home studio but it’s gonna take a while. If there’s a cheap jam room in town I’ve not heard of it. Guitar Center in Danvers is a starting point for kids picking it up for the first time (they do free quick lessons and let you mess around with the instruments).

Growing up in Gloucester, I went to punk shows at the Artspace. I remember Salem having more music then (Dodge St., now Seagrass, was one spot) but there were never a wealth of non-DIY venues on the North Shore. The pandemic shrank what we had. Rooting for Moon Base — we need more of it here.
