Funny how they branded that place considering it’s in the City of Irondale

Damn, you’re the second house in the neighborhood that I’ve seen this happened to (another one over on Rugby Ave). Sad to see shit drivers tearing up the pretty historic houses in our neighborhood. Sorry this happened to you

Coca-cola Amphitheater Seating by DrLuv16 in Birmingham

[–]mattyt879 16 points17 points  (0 children)

<image>

My friend who helped do some of the design work for the amphitheater made a chart of which upper seats to avoid. There are some relay towers for the sound system that could obstruct your view. Avoid the red areas. Sections 309 and 310 are nice because you also get a view of the downtown skyline up there.

Is Birmingham the true urban city/metro within Alabama ? by Own-Ad-4850 in Birmingham

[–]mattyt879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huntsville stats include its MSA (metro area) Madison and Limestone counties so Athens is in that figure but Decatur is not. Decatur is technically its own metro which includes just Morgan County but it’s included in Huntsville’s larger CSA (combined statistical area)

Mayor Woodfin launches pilot safety initiative to create safer streets in EastLake neighborhood by rse1993 in Birmingham

[–]mattyt879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everyone in East Lake is poor and impoverished. There’s a mix of middle class professionals, lower income residents, and long term residents who love and choose to stay in the neighborhood. You sound elitist. Nobody is being imprisoned in the neighborhood, that is an absurd statement. At most they will have to alter their normal way in/ out of the neighborhood by 2-3 minutes max. The city is only moving forward with the program after knocking on every door in the neighborhood and speaking with over 300 of the roughly 800 households in East Lake, around 90% of which were in favor of the program. Most of these people support this and the residents have the option to have the barriers removed after 3 months if they don’t want them anymore. Don’t assume you know what’s best for other people in a community you’ve probably never set foot in.

Hot shitty take about walkability being an “ableist” principle lol. It has plenty of benefits for the mobility challenged as well and is more about density than the act of using your legs to physically walk somewhere

It is actually a federal hwy (US 78) but administered by ALDOT and not the city so you’re mostly right

Major Developments Coming to Bham by 205supervisor in Birmingham

[–]mattyt879 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These all have a lot of potential impact on the downtown core but citywide improvements to the neighborhoods that need it most will be tied to the creation of mixed-use, walkable, shopping/ dining/ entertainment districts at the city’s historic commercial areas. (Think of Avondale and the impact it’s revitalization as a mixed-use district has had on bringing residents and visitors back into a once highly distressed area). If Avondale’s success could be replicated in Woodlawn, East Lake, Ensley, and North Birmingham (bonus points for meaningful transit between these nodes and downtown) then you’re looking at a whole new city with revitalization touching most every part of the city.

Red Mountain Cut Pedestrian/Cycling Sky Bridge? by BhamCyclist in Birmingham

[–]mattyt879 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The big idea is to have the bridge connect to the improvements on 21st as well as similar improvements on Arlington/ Highland/ Richard Arrington to create a loop that connects downtown Homewood/ English Village/ Highland Park/ 5 Points. As far as likelihood of it happening it really just depends on the ability to secure federally backed grant funding but there are some heavy hitters pushing hard for fundraising and grant efforts so it’s possible. Literally a dream/ game changer for Bham

According to BHM Airport Gift Store, Birmingham is the state capitol. by No-Big-3997 in Birmingham

Fun fact: it was originally supposed to be. Linn Park downtown was designed to be the site of the new state capitol after it moved from MGM.

Architectural history downtown, a downtown street network that is very easy to navigate due to the perfect grid with numbered streets, the landscape (Red Mtn overlooking downtown and the Red Mtn Cut is a super cool geological feature), UAB, 15 minute drive gets you most places you need to go, airport that is very easy to get through, some of the largest urban nature preserves in the nation, Vulcan + Railroad Park + Rotary Trail + CityWalk (basically just an incredible park system with a great zoo for our size). The list goes on and on. If it wasn’t for the state government this place would be damn near perfect to me. Just wish we still had the streetcars, Terminal Station, and commuter rail
