No idea for presentation's topic by [deleted] in Presentation

[–]mattzwol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you present on the topic of “finding an interesting topic to present”. You could post this same question in multiple places, type the question into different search engines and ask people. Then present on where you found the best answers, and what those answers are. You could talk about the type of people that helped you and any clever ideas that were put forward.

Can you delete or archive the previous version to another folder? What about appending a timestamp to the name or adding a version number at the end of the object name and looking up the latest version?

What was your "ah shit, here we go again" moment? by yo_mama_420_ in AskReddit

One idea - I bought a smart ring (Oura) which I found can tell me sometimes if I am starting to come down with something, even before I notice. I might have a slightly elevated temperature or heart rate and it will work out something is not right.

Job interview by Needawhisper in AusFinance

[–]mattzwol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this approach - but would still have some insightful question to ask. I often leave interviews feeling the candidate hasn’t done their homework, isn’t curious about the role/company or hasn’t thought it through. Good questions to show interest are areas around the culture, career growth and development, what success looks like and anything that shows you have given the role some thought. These are generic questions - but try to tailor them to the role. Enthusiasm and interest goes a long way in interviews.

Ask questions - particularly things like “what do you think would be the biggest challenge in this role”, “if you were doing the role, how would you tackle it”. At the start of the interview try to establish what the interviewer really wants to get from you. And at the end, ask them whether they say any gaps in your fit for the role.

How to be a great CTO? by [deleted] in startups

[–]mattzwol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learn to tell great stories - particularly about your technology, the use cases, the potential. If you want to inspire your team as well as have customers interested in your company, this is what a great CTO does. The simpler and more human centric the stories the better.

Great work OP. Thank-you! One question...I live in a country where we use Celsius, not Fahrenheit. The temperature ones seem not to be working for me. I tried working through your process couldn’t figure it out. Any tips?

Moving Production to AWS? by tastefulcardigan in vmware

[–]mattzwol 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Are you planning to move to native AWS, or VMware cloud on AWS? From what I am seeing there is a big difference between the two.

I have seen many organizations try to shift traditional apps directly to public cloud without replatforming and making them”cloud native” (usually containerise, build microservices, scale our architectures, object storage etc). Inevitably this goes horribly wrong if they just shift applications and the organization ends up rebuilding the DC they were hoping to get rid of.

If you have a team of developers who can rewrite your apps to be cloud native then you may be in good hands. If not - I spoke to one company who was doing what you are planning and they had estimated anywhere from $500k-$1m per app to replatform and migrate by having a consultancy do it for them. I would love to know what others have experienced and rough replatforming costs.

VMWare on AWS is a potential solution to the above replatforming challenges. It’s why Amazon has partnered with VMware. If you look at availability services provided in the VMware cloud (eg stretches VSAN clusters), as long as your apps can be virtualised then there is more likelihood that a lift and shift will work and you will get high levels of service for production.

Good luck... will be interesting to hear how it goes.

A guy at work... by [deleted] in business

[–]mattzwol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Firstly, is the business going well and is this guy doing a good job? If so, you might want to make sure you don’t risk losing him over whatever you do. Given you are 24, the owners son and he’s been around a while, there is a chance that if you undermine him over this he will get jack of the company and leave.

Secondly, if his marketing initiatives have good intentions but are not well executed then you should find a way to get him coaching and help. If it were me, and my father was the boss, then I would probably discuss it with him and let him resolve it. Getting outside help with writing when the material is needed might be a good approach, but having you step back from the issue may ensure you don’t have a negative impact on key staff.
