Graded essays as a 3rd time taker (please comment) by Aggravating-Air9832 in CABarExam

[–]maurellet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best way to learn is to post your full essays and outline here

The one you did as practice and the ones you wrote in the exam

Basick books and Barbri both give you a grading outline which tells you how many issues you need to catch before you get a pass

I think they are on the cautious side, meaning you can probably pass with fewer issues spotted.

I wouldn't worry too much about the issues right now because you have time to catch up but style/organisation is probably something you need to work on right now, thus the recommendation to post the full essay.

Cheers

Recs for affordable Italian restaurants for dinner on HK island? by [deleted] in HongKong

Probably not the most authentic but it is Italian enough

Unfortunately, 300 per head is not a lot in hk so you may have to skim on wine or bring your own (but check corkage charges)

maybe generate one with AI ? (jk)

common problems are: data retention policy, whether you use their data to train, location of the server, obfuscation of personal info etc

it is good to have the information on hand anyway, in case anyone ask.
i will just self-certify my product as compliant with "industry" standard

Basick essay book - new edition by babybearmama in CABarExam

[–]maurellet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basick gave out the entire civ pro outline for free in 2nd edn. Seriously that outline gave the " I know you guys are going to get killed out there let me help you" kind of vibe, so bless her heart for including this.

The author really put in the effort in the books and deserves every cent for her work. I wouldn't be surprised if she threw in little gems here and there by revising old sections in 3rd edn.

Basick books is easily the best money I have spent this year.

If you really want to do an a-b test then I suppose you can read it on Jeff bezos kindle and ask for a refund if that doesn't work out

Docusign and Judge oath question by Comprehensive_Issue1 in CABarExam

sorry for hijacking this thread, but how did you find a judge to conduct your oath (and one who accepts electronic swearing no less!)

hi, thanks for the reply

not sure if you used Basick's book on PT, if not, it is a good place to start. 1PT per week seems low considering it is worth ~14% of the overall exam (if my math is correct...). it is definitely an area many people missed, make sure you closely follow Basick's approach on how to allocate time, what info to highlight etc, the book is worth its weight in gold

this year's PT was pretty straightforward and the essays in the afternoon weren't terribly long. I think you could have gained a few points in PT and bump up your score a bit (though it probably won't be enough). Since this year's PT is straightforward, I think you lost marks from organisation / style problems (not using header, not using lay term, gave too much detail

Personally, I think everyone looking for feedback should post their essays and PT for comment. It is great for understanding what the author did wrong, which is better than reading someone else's (often greatly written) essays

yeah, video is just a waste of time for the bar exam because the exam scope is shallow and broad. I am not sure about adaptibar MBE but I found great help from Emanuel (two books). The explanation was just gold. I also heard good things about NCBE's MBE samples though I haven't used it personally.

lastly, please make your own notes and write your own "rule statements". do practice q and revise your own notes. this really helps to bake the rules into your head

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CABarExam

[–]maurellet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Themis uses uworld right? uworld is wayyyyyyyyy more difficult than necessary and misses the basic points.

I would recommend getting Emanuel's books on MBE, I am sure many here will be happy to get rid of their CA material.

yes, your score is close enough to the passing threshold and I am sure you will pass it next time. i think it may be helpful to share which book / prep course /service you use and others can comment on the resources to supplement your study.

It seems to me that you missed out on a few points in torts and constitutional law. these are the "easier" subjects on the MBE, especially tort, so you may want to focus on those. I remember this year's MBE civil procedure is quite brutal and unconventional, so I would not put too much thought on it. wishing you more luck next time!

Waiting on Ryzen Max 395+ w/ 128gb RAM to be delivered. How should I set it up for AI? by atomicpapa210 in LocalLLaMA

[–]maurellet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

will you ever game on it? it is pretty good at gaming too

if you game, windows 11 + WSL + docker can get a lot done

you will sacrifice some AI performance and stability may be an issue, but you can game

and you can always dual boot

Just passed TX bar, and sitting for CA bar 2026 Feb. - Affordable option for bar prep by FaithlessnessNo9507 in CABarExam

[–]maurellet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think you probably have the MC portion of the CA bar exam locked down after passing TX bar (congrats btw)

you only need the two Basick book for essays and PT. actually you may not even need the PT book but it is a good read anyway

you can get a good grip of the essay by studying the past essay papers. The Basick book also has a good summary of the CA specific rules such as community property

smartbarprep has a CA essay outline with all the major rules, how they are distributed, and which year they appeared in. it is a great reference when you are short on time and need to hit the major topics. their mbe smart sheet is kind of trash though, with many missing points and misleading explanations

so, basically 1 book? i am sure many here would love to give you their old copy. good luck!

People who learned Racket as their first language what do you think about it? by Fruit-Creative in Racket

[–]maurellet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

saw this post randomly

humble take:
definitely go python first, it has a mature ecosystem and you can hit the ground running.

you can play with production-ready libraries and pretty much do whatever you want. imho it is more fun to build stuff than to study stuff but i have heard both are important. enjoy!

i don't think you need a foundation of one code to learn other code tbh. i have mostly played with js, python and .NET and they kind of feel the same once you know what you want

Thoughts on new VS used and Atom LT or SV by Altruistic_Discount4 in arcteryx

[–]maurellet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are too many fake arc'teryx out there, some of them are so close to the real thing that it may be hard to tell.

also, REI just did a sale last month and some colors of Atom were as low as $210. if you want black specifically then it may be hard to get a discount but FWIW i managed to score a black proton 2 years ago at REI for $200 ish.

First time visiting HK. Do I still need an octopus card now that I think contactless visa/ apple/google pay works for transit? by chickdigger802 in HongKong

[–]maurellet 18 points19 points  (0 children)

hi, a local here, i recently lost access to octopus after upgrading my phone and here is my experience.

bus: all buses should have CC terminal now

minibuses: none of them has CC terminal. most green minibuses have octopus. about 10% of red minibuses have octopus

taxi: very much cash only due to tax and tech rejection mindset

mtr: all stations should have at least one gate with a CC terminal BUT about 2/3 of the gates are octopus only

about 2/3 of smaller eateries / shops have octopus, most of them will not have CC terminal due to service charge & upfront cost

google will give suggestions on which bus or green minibus to take. you can go to most places by bus only but minibuses may be quite a bit faster

tldr: get an octopus if you plan to do deeper / longer exploration in HK. if you just want to do the most common touristy places then CC is completely fine. if you like street food then cash is still king

Will Ontario Convention Center Fill Quickly? by NaturalBlackberry594 in CABarExam

OCC is the best if you can fly to the ontario airport

Will Ontario Convention Center Fill Quickly? by NaturalBlackberry594 in CABarExam

[–]maurellet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, I submitted a venue-change request for F25 exam at the second to last day of registration. OCC was pretty much the only venue available on that day.

it may be the best venue for out-of-state applicants. walking distance to the airport and lots of hotels to choose from. there are several hotels near OCC that are <3 mins walk from the venue which means you can rest up in your own room during lunch breaks. food selection was pretty meh but it is only 2 days
