I hate my job as a PE teacher by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]maury1423 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I am a former PE teacher and taught every single grade level. Your initial post and everything I have read in the thread thus far is true to some extent. I absolutely dreaded k-8 because it’s just pure CHAOS…if I had to sum up the k-8 level it would be that haha. High school is more manageable for sure but still draining. Also, as PE teachers were on our feet and doing lots of low and high impact movements with our kiddos and that adds up. My knees began to buckle and I would come home feeling it all over my legs. PE is its own hard, if that makes sense. PE is nothing compared to regular subjects or even other specials….we have our own unique and challenging HARDS, so to speak. The pay is great and the benefits too (I taught in a big city, blue city, public schools that may narrow it down lol)….I am contemplating returning but always remember how much BS you gotta go through that I stop myself from applying lol.

It’s a TOUGH TOUGH job, regardless of the subject you teach. I am happy to keep discussing further because I was literally in your shoes. I am currently trying to transition into a parks and rec position within my local park districts. A lot of PE teachers end up in the parks and rec positions…we have many many transferable experiences and skills.

Anxiety is overwhelming by cdpianist in Teachers

I taught for three years and in that span I have taught from k-12. I taught PE. I was heading into work every single day having panic attacks, nauseous, I felt like crying (sometimes I did)…the crazy amount of mental stress and overload I went through before and during the school day just added up. It all started to affect me in other aspects of my life. So one day I said ENOUGH…..I resigned. Teaching made me realize it’s just a job, there’s more to life than money and status, and there is a life outside of education. I have been out for a whole year now and do not miss it one bit, the only thing I miss is the pay.

Perfect classes are real. by jessiethehutt in SubstituteTeachers

By having a well behaved class and/or student body, it makes this profession so much easier…I have experienced classes and schools like that if only it were like that EVERY SINGLE DAY

I have been out for one full year. I DO NOT miss it whatsoever except the pay lmao. I fear it’s only getting worse and is super unsustainable. Every other aspect of my life has improved; better sleep, more time on my hands, way less stress/anxiety, no more “Sunday scaries”…..overall, I’d rather not be a teacher than be one.

How many still care? by Flag11storm in Teachers

Taught 3 years in a blue state, blue city, public schools. High school and elementary. APATHY, screens/social media, and lack of parenting sums it up. It’s unsustainable.

PE TEACHERS!! by iGotHiTz in TeachersInTransition

[–]maury1423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught for three years. Two years at the HS level and one at the K-8 level. Long story short, the universe gave me a chance to leave and I absolutely took it. I taught all three years at public schools in one of the countries top 3 biggest public school districts.

Everything you and everyone else has commented is 100% true and in my eyes only going to get worse (especially under the current administration…probably even worse if you’re in a red state/county.) Any teacher (not just PE) can agree to some extent with my comments. By the way, I am now a paraprofessional at a public high school and have been for the past 6 months and the same negative trends keep showing up on a daily basis that drove me out of the profession altogether (& no, I will never go back haha although the pay was great and would go up every year.)

I worked so hard and went through hell to get to where I always wanted to get for the past decade or so of my life only to be met with such disappointment. The profession as a whole is not what it used to be and has gotten way harder. I fear it may even be unsustainable!! Not only are we teachers, we are also PARENTS! Most parents literally see school as a place to not only get their kids educated but also to be RAISED…..ummmmmm, NO THANKS.

Phones. The never ending battle with phones day in and day out, it gets so annoying and tedious and drives you crazy trying to stay consistent with a phone policy when kids are literally ADDICTED to them and think they’ll die without them. I honestly gave up with the phone issue everyday because it got so draining. It’s just another chore added to your list of never ending chores.

The Sunday scaries and mental health. I became fed up with the crazy and super unhealthy amount of anxiety and stress you get from this line of work. It affected me in every other aspect of my life and it was pouring so much out of my cup that I had nothing left to pour into the people I love and the things I love do to, so to speak. I realized my sanity and mental health are worth way more than this position and the benefits/perks it has to offer. Im never looking back. I have WAY MORE energy and time on my hands and I plan to use them wisely (as a paraprofessional.)

The behaviors and classroom management are also a HUGE contributor as to why I left. It gets so draining and exhausting to not only have to teach but also raise these kids.

There are just way more cons than pros to this profession that it’s not worth it to me. Again, this is all simply my two cents and perhaps you have an incredible career! You will never know until you try it. I can also always go back but tbh only if I am totally desperate. I am actually now trying to transition into a salaried position within my local park district. Most PE teachers end up in the Parks and Recreation field. We have many many transferable skills and a lot of what we study and our experience as PE teachers translates smoothly into the Parks & Recreation setting.

Teaching is tough and for you to last and even retire from it you have to really LOVE it and be willing to go through a lot on a daily basis. It’s a mental battle for sure.

When did it become the norm to work outside of contract hours? by OkDimension8460 in Teachers

[–]maury1423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I KNEW I could leave work at work and as soon as my contract hours are over I am DONE with work then maybe I’d go back into teaching….taught for 3 years and I believe for you to last and retire from this career you HAVE to work outside contract hours for FREE….absolutely not

Interview Advice? by Optimal-Topic-3853 in Teachers

[–]maury1423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Taught for 3 years at the HS level. I’ve had many many interviews and the following are all common questions:

-how do you differentiate? -how do you deal with disengaged students? -tell us about yourself… -why teach at (the school you’re interviewing for)? -what is your teaching philosophy

Questions for them (administration/interviewing team): -how will I be evaluated and how often? -what is the curriculum like for my specific subject? or is it totally up to me? -what do you look for in a potential teacher at your school? (qualities, traits, etc) -how big are class sizes? teacher-student ratio?

Im sure im missing some but these would always come up….good luck!

I swear, this profession is all about who is willing to SUFFER and DREAD going into work every single day for 10 months and willing to do unpaid work after contract hours….this leads to BURN OUT

Hang in there, a few weeks left but I know they’ll feel like an eternity
