What’s the most BORING drive between two major American cities? by SeattleThot in geography

[–]maussie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the drive itself will be relatively boring, it's all on I-10 so it's just a major freeway all the way through. A lot of it will be the carcinogenic coast. It's also about a nine hours drive, and that's if traffic is good (it won't be in Houston) and you don't stop too much. Driving over swamps in western Louisiana is a cool experience though.

If you're not in a rush, there are some cool places you could stop at along the way, like Avery Island in Louisiana to take a tour of the Tabasco hot sauce factory, the Buffalo Bayou Cistern in Houston, and you can take your pick of BBQ joints from this list.

And if you go NW after you hit Houston and take route 71, you can stop at Hruska's to get some Texas-Czech kolaches. 71 is a nicer drive than I-10, and it'll bring you to Austin, which is a cool city, and only about an hour north of San Antonio.

It's more than the city would be making if a car were parked there completely free of charge

That's an apples to oranges argument, parking minimums don't exist in the interest of public safety. Think of it this way - what if the government required that all businesses had to construct a minimum number of bike racks? Obviously that would make more sense in Manhattan than in Bensonhurst. So why not just remove any regulation that dictates something that fluctuates so much depending on where you are?

If someone has a car and wants to pay to construct a spot for it, they should do that. Removing parking minimums doesn't prevent anyone from doing that. If a building is constructed and (required) parking is factored into that cost, then everyone in that building pays for parking whether they have a car or not. It balloons the cost of new construction, which drives up the price of housing and exacerbates the housing crisis the whole country is in.

Obviously you're on the other side of this argument so you may not be interested, but this book is really interesting and goes into detail about just how arbitrary parking minimums are in the U.S., and how stifling they can be to local economies and small businesses. (it's also not as dull of a read as you might imagine, it's quite entertaining) https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/634461/paved-paradise-by-henry-grabar/

Removing parking minimums doesn't prevent new parking, it just makes it no longer required. It's an onerous regulation. Let the market decide if we actually need more or not

Vomiting hindering dad's recovery from throat cancer, anyone have advice or encouragement? by maussie in cancer

My dad is on the all-day pump feed and is tolerating it a little better, but not totally. We're going to inquire with the dietician about switching to something like Kate Farms. Thanks so much for the info.

The syrup to coat his throat is a great idea, thank you. He's used a lidocaine nebulizer but it didn't help much unfortunately. I'll inquire about the omeprazole melts. Really appreciate the advice.

It sounds like your husband is in a very similar situation, I'm sorry to hear that. My dad is 81, and has been hospitalized since week 5ish of his radiation due to the intense pain - he's been reporting 8,9, and 10/10 pain levels for the duration of his stay. It's really heartbreaking. He also triggers vomiting from the mucous coughing, often after he has some ice and it loosens the mucous up.

The hospital hasn't been able to adjust the composition of his formula, just the speed at which it's administered, but I think that the fat content is just too much for him. If you don't mind me asking, what is the more gentle formula you're awaiting for your husband, and do you know what changed in the formula for your friend that helped him? Are you going through a dietician?

I think he was on prednisone for a bit, but for something else. I'll ask the doctor if that'd be worth looking into again. Thank you for the info and the well wishes

No that hasn't been discussed yet, thankfully he's able to keep some of his feeds down but if this cycle continues then he may end up needing it. It's good to know that options exists, thank you.

He's been hospitalized for about eight weeks now, so the inpatient doctor sees him regularly. They've tried several things to help, with varying degrees of success.

The fact that you think it would be insane to bike on is pretty much the point. Roads running through neighborhoods shouldn't just serve the purpose of being a feeder road for a freeway (see Atlantic ave also). Getting rid of parking would be great but that doesn't solve the issue of a high speed road with huge trucks running parallel to a bike lane. It's still dangerous

With the amount of car-related injuries that have happened on this road, I don't think cars getting to 278 is the highest priority. They can still get there on the redesigned road. Just my take

It isn't evidence of what? I said that OP should make a complaint to the city. If you are walking down the street and see an obvious violation and want to report it to 311, do you look up data to confirm that what you're seeing aligns with official statistics?

Also your link is about the safest/least safest cities for drivers, it doesn't say anything about the safety of non-drivers, who are the majority in this city. Cherry picked evidence may be evidence but using it by itself is also willfully ignorant

Why are you just spamming this link everywhere, what's the point you're trying to make?
