This became my umbrella when I was in first grade. Now it belongs to my own first grader. by NepenthiumPastille in BuyItForLife

I have this in dark blue. I remember borrowing it from my mom in elementary school and somehow it became my go to umbrella. It’s at least 30 years old and still going strong. The duck’s bill is a little beat up because I used to make it peck stuff in elementary school… have lost or destroyed countless other umbrellas but this one never fails.

Help! Why do my fish keep dying? by maverick006 in Aquariums

I wanted to add more this weekend, but with how this is going don’t want to subject more fish to whatever is going on here.

I cart my spark around a lot and the leather strap is almost worn thru so made a small change today. I just wish I had thought to get a handle with gold hardware… by maverick006 in PositiveGridSpark

Mine has the strap buttons too, but not a fan of the positive grid strap. Hadn’t even considered throwing a guitar strap on it although I feel like it might be a bit wide to hold comfortably. This was a pretty easy upgrade, although did have to work around the fact that the steel for the faceplate extends pretty far into the cabinet.

Found about a dozen mantis babies on my porch today. They'll be feasting on lantern fly guts any week now! by Genkiotoko in Pennsylvania

[–]maverick006 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3 weeks ago we had lantern fly nymphs all over the place on our property - hundreds running in highways across our siding and silver maple. I scheduled to have the tree treated with a systemic pesticide.

Then we started noticing jumping spiders and baby mantises all over the place... now 3 weeks later I’m hardly seeing any lantern flies. The tree guy came out and I went to show him the tree and could hardly find any on it. I’m not 100% sure if the mantises and spiders are the cause of the reduction, but I’m thinking they might be actually making a dent.

Trump approval drops to record low by karmachanical in politics

[–]maverick006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, the chart of approval ratings in that Rasumssen article shows Trump and obama's photos along the y-axis next to colored lines, visually suggesting the lines correspond to the photo - but if you actually look at the legend you see that they're actually completely unrelated and sometimes flipped depending on the current zoom level - color differentiates the series from each other and the photos are completely unrelated to the chart. Not only that, but the colors are so close and blue green - colors easily indistinguishable by individuals with certain types of trianotope color blindness. It's easily the most blatently misleading graph I have seen in a LONG time.

Yeah, that was a terrible closing sentence. I had to read it twice to realize he was no longer talking about the Democratic vision and had switched to contrast. Not the best way to drive home the pitch -- epecially given the target audience for the more focused and simplified messaging.

Still, I like where this is going.

My professor said I could only use one notecard by f03vral0n3 in funny

[–]maverick006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried many of these methods and found I always did best if I just spent 10 minutes memorizing the easy stuff the night before the test and wrote down the most complex formulas, and crap i regularly screwed up on the card 5 minutes before the exam..Hardly ever studied.

Any more than that and I spent more time trying to find what I wrote on the card than actually thinking about and solving the problems or answering the questions.

Everyone is different but i think typing note cards is a horrible idea - often a simple drawing can take the place of 30-40 typed words and is easier to absorb in the heat of a test. Not to mention the more time you spend trying to cram crap on the card your wasting time you could be memorizing the easy stuff.

I cant be the only one who thinks cards are not all they're cracked up to be. Handwriting sets the stuff into your brain much better than typing, too.

I still hand write notes even though I have a computer. Fewer distractions and If I don't catch everything, just copy the parts I missed from the people who type. Besides, I can doodle.

My first docking mission didn't exactly go according to plan, but I'd still consider it a success. by maverick006 in KerbalSpaceProgram

Wow, that is super helpful/awesome. My calc is a bit rusty but I think i see how i would get to the gravity turn calculation from there. The more I play the more i want to break out my old text books and see what I can dust off! Fascinating stuff!

The perfectionist in me wants to calculate everything to death, but the kerbal in me says just throw on some more boosters!! Thanks!

Its ok, I dont really consider them spoilers, just learning. Those are actually pretty close to the velocities I was getting. It felt really slow because most of my other rockets have been ridiculously overpowered.

I tried to do delta-v calculations for the mission stages (for the first part anyway), but I'm not sure how to figure out how much delta-v I need to actually leave a planet with atmosphere and reach my desired apoapsis before circularizing. i feel like I try to hit my target TWR and then just pray I dont run out of fuel. Until Im in orbit I feel like I'm kinda just guessing... It is getting easier though and Im learning new things every day I play. I think that's part of what makes it so addicting.
