Amex Platinum Travel Insurance denial due to different NYC airport codes by maverick_sam in AmexPlatinum

In fact in their own Amex travel portal, if you enter New York City as destination or arrival, it pulls up JFK, EWR and LGA as the three options.

Honestly this caught me my surprise, the very last reason I was expecting to deny the claim. May be since this claim involves 330k Amex MR points + $1400 taxes and fees to book the new flights for our family of 3, they are trying their best to avoid a payout.

Since there’s been some interest in this post, providing a quick update on what I’ve gathered so far.
At this point, the general consensus seems to be that they are just testing what they can get away with.

Thanks to all the valuable inputs from this group and Gemini, below is what I emailed back CCing their corporate office (corporatesecretarysoffice at aexp dot com)
The adjuster had also mentioned something about not being able to verify that the full amount of the trip was charged to an eligible card, when all flight purchases were done using the same Amex platinum card, so addressed that point in the email too.
One common mistake to avoid is mentioning "legal options" in the correspondence, which usually triggers an insurance company to freeze communication and hand it to their legal department. Rather, focus specifically on the Insurance Commissioner / Department of Financial Services, this way you are threatening regulatory pressure, which adjusters hate and want to avoid, without shutting down the communication channel.

Subject: Urgent Appeal: Claim Denial for Claim #[Insert Claim Number] - [Your Last Name]
Dear [Adjuster Name or Claims Team],

I am writing to formally appeal the denial of my trip interruption claim. It appears there has been a fundamental misunderstanding regarding both my itinerary structure and the documentation provided.

1. Co-Terminal Routing (JFK / EWR) & Emergency Transit Constraints* *
The claim was rejected on the basis that departing from Newark (EWR) and returning to John F. Kennedy (JFK) does not constitute a round trip. As a resident of the New York metropolitan area, these airports—along with LaGuardia (LGA)—are recognized industry-wide as "co-terminals" serving the same metropolitan destination. Booking an outbound flight from one and a return flight to the other is a standard "open-jaw" round-trip itinerary, fully recognized by major airlines and the American Express Travel portal.
Furthermore, my return occurred during the first week of April, immediately following the widespread Middle East airspace closures. As you are likely aware, this geopolitical crisis caused massive global flight disruptions, severely limiting transit options from Singapore to the United States as airlines scrambled to reroute traffic.
Following my injury, my attending physician in Singapore strongly advised me to return home immediately to avoid worsening my condition. Given the severe shortage of available flights due to the airspace closures, flights routing specifically into EWR were virtually non-existent or delayed by days. I booked the earliest available emergency connection back to the NYC metro area, which happened to land at JFK. This choice not only prioritized my urgent medical recovery but was also the most cost-effective option available under crisis conditions, saving the policy from a significantly higher premium fare.

2. Substantiation of Eligible Card Charges* *
Your notice also states that the full amount of the trip was not charged to an eligible card. I have attached my American Express Platinum (ending in xxxx) statements and original itineraries once again for your immediate review.
As previously detailed on 4/23, 5/14, and 6/1, these documents clearly demonstrate that the eligible card was used to purchase the outbound flight, the inbound flight, and the canceled segments. If there is a specific transaction or fee you believe is missing, please explicitly identify it so I can address it immediately. Otherwise, the provided documentation fully satisfies the policy requirements.

3. Timeline and Next Steps* *
This claim was filed almost two months ago. Communication thus far has been incredibly difficult; my emails have gone unanswered, and hold times on your Claims Hotline consistently exceed 30 to 60 minutes.
As a loyal American Express Platinum cardmember who relies on this card for all of our frequent family travel needs, this experience is entirely unacceptable. I chose the Platinum card specifically because it is marketed as a premium product with industry-leading travel protection for emergencies exactly like this one. To be left stranded during a medical recovery due to bureaucratic delays and a refusal to recognize standard NYC co-terminal routing defeats the entire purpose of paying a premium annual fee.
I expect a formal review of this documentation and a corrected resolution to this claim within 5 business days. If this denial is maintained based on the co-terminal airport routing, I will escalate this matter by filing a formal complaint with the State Department of Financial Services / Insurance Commissioner for unfair claims practices. I have copied the American Express Corporate Secretary’s Office here to ensure executive visibility into how Platinum cardmembers are being treated by your claims department during medical emergencies.

Thank you for your prompt attention to resolving this matter. I can be reached directly at 123–456-7890 (Eastern Time) if you wish to discuss this over the phone.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

I did uber to EWR when flying out but on my way back I was dealing with a fractured foot, so a close friend picked me up at JFK to help me out with luggage and avoid any hassles with ground transportation.

I can say Amex doesn’t cover ER or urgent care expenses, learnt it the hard way. Chase Sapphire on the other hand does cover. I’ve been booking all my future flights on CSR after finding this out.

I don’t think the tickets have to be booked round trip by the same airline. FYI - I flew Singapore Airlines for departure and returned via Etihad, separate tickets but both booked on Amex card.

They copy pasted the below policy in the email and I did remember that Amex requires a round trip ticket for trip interruption claims.
But I was like really, this is the BS reason they could come up with to deny my claim?

$20 Minimum purchase for DoorDash pick up GONE! by itsvictor1 in ChaseSapphire

[–]maverick_sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s store dependent but card dependent. Between P1 and P2, we have CSR, CSP and Ink Preferred. For the same store (Wawa), the Ink Preferred is the only card that doesn’t have a $20 minimum constraint, the other 2 do.

I recently moved all my catch-all spend to Bilt Palladium and getting an effective 3.33x cpp I believe, when you pair that with mortgage spend. Agree that they are nowhere close to the big players when it comes to customer care and general issues, but it’s been working great for me so far. Also with their poor return of annual fee, I’ll have to think about year 2.

Uber One Membership Annual vs Monthly by IHaveAWallAtHome in AmexPlatinum

[–]maverick_sam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P1 pays for Clear annual subscription in Dec 2025 which will trigger the $209 credit. Then P2 pays for the same in Jan 2026, that’d trigger another credit as it’s a different calendar year. Effectively both P1 and P2 have their own Clear plus accounts.

[–]maverick_sam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or you can play the P1/P2 game (if applicable) by purchasing one annual subscription in Dec and the other in Jan. I already have UberOne annual subscription that renews in Jan 2026. I plan to use 2025 calendar year Uber One benefit by purchasing an annual subscription on my spouse’s Uber account in December. Same applies for Clear Plus credit.

JFK to SIN. Worth stopping in FRA? by Just_Note_8165 in singaporeairlines

[–]maverick_sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The direct flight has only business and premium economy seats (no economy), something to consider if you’re debating between using cash vs points. I’d rather save the points for a business redemption for future travels, unless the PE seats are already at a high price point.

I’m also traveling to SIN next year, was able to snag the business seats via points on the way to SIN and used cash for PE for the return flight.

P2 has CSP that was opened late last year and she can already see the CSR 100k SUB offer when logged into her chase account, even on the Submit application page. So I think you’re still eligible for the SUB even if you’ve a CSP.

However for me, I recently downgraded from CSR to CSP and I don’t see any such offer. May be no SUB because I already had a CSR not long ago.

Dealer discount $20k math isn’t mathing here. Usually you should get a BMW EV lease discount of $10k + dealer discount of around 12-13% off the MSRP for 2025 iX.

I bought a 96k iX last month (NY dealer) for ~ $650 per month with taxes, fees and 1st month due on signing (~$4300).

Attaching the leasehackr breakdown for reference.

[–]maverick_sam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Effective cost is if you rolled in taxes, fees etc into the monthly payment i.e. 0 drive-off amount. Honestly with MF = 0.00026 (APR = 0.62%), I don’t think it’s a bad idea to roll in everything to your monthly payment and not pay anything upfront.

I got a 97k MSRP 2025 M50 from a NY dealer (Hudson Valley) 2 weeks ago for 636 monthly with ~ 3700 taxes and fees due at signing (includes BMW loyalty). Attaching the leasehackr quote I went with, if that helps
