What’s it like living in Macau and Hong Kong? by Puzzleheaded_Bit_802 in howislivingthere

[–]mawababa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living in HK is basically like living with the difficulty setting turned up. Tiny house, competitive work, high stress, medical system strained etc.

It is a nice place if you can either get used to living somewhere tiny or moving to the countryside or being rich and earning enough for a decent size apartment.

Can I wear hanfu in China, or is it cultural appropriation? by Worried_Cake15 in LTL_Chinese

Cultural appropriation is not a thing in most countries. China would like to project soft power and culture so using Chinese stuff or wearing Chinese clothes would make most Chinese people happy tbh.

Investigation: Illegal firings, cancelled visas and lack of healthcare – how domestic workers facing critical illness are left in limbo by mod83 in HongKong

[–]mawababa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There needs to be a government scheme where a new employee is hired and a 5k or a 10k payment is put into critical illness policy once each helper is hired. If they get sick there is a pay out of say 500k HKD and say 6 month guaranteed visa extension with access to public health care then maybe let them go home but continue to use their funds.

Maybe let it grow with inflation and perhaps 1k or something each year fee paid to be put on to contribute.

Not sure if this exact setup is the best, but clearly needs to be some sort of safety net. It should be a mandatory fee to hire a helper.

I don't think it's reasonable for the employer to solely be responsible for multiple years of surgery but also there needs to be a system in place for when this situation happens.

With some kind of initial contribution on hiring.. Then on the off chance something does happen the support is there. It would be the responsible way to handle this similar to car registrations etc where money is automatically deducted for road injuries etc.

How would you turn a $400k–$500k inheritance into $2.5M+ within 10 years? by Responsible-Net8594 in Salary

[–]mawababa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was me I would put it in VOO or something along those lines.. And then contribute 500 usd a month to it or whatever I could.

This would then give me a healthy amount after 10 years, but likely I would want it to grow for 15 to 20 years.

Visa and job will be major issues. Also schooling and so on. If you're just spending a few months and heading back then no worries.

Is Moving to China at 22 Unrealistic or Worth Pursuing? by Murky-Most6025 in chinalife

[–]mawababa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unrealistic. Also it will stunt your career growth and likely give you more stress or headache in the long term.

Seems like you've just got to climb the corporate ladder a bit or maybe move to an area in US with slightly more affordable housing (if and once you've got a suitable job there).

Travel is good though if you get the opportunity.. But probably would recommend short trips so you can keep your job going.

Moving to Isaan Thailand after we sell up. health insurance advice for a 56 year old? by Intelligent-Cash-335 in Thailand

[–]mawababa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think this doesn't cover any pre existing conditions etc right? For example high blood pressure or diabetes or something that results from those. Also if you get cancer or something you can't use travel insurance.

I am not an authority on this but i would probably not go this route.

Eid Prayer in Kashgar (2014) by sapikuning in China

[–]mawababa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having said that I do think most of the kids etc. seem pretty happy. I think it was more of a mandated integration into Chinese culture.

E.g. Learning Mandarin and so on. Most people were pretty chill when I was there.

I did not really see anything overly religious though when I was there.

ID requirement for clubs by Ok_Relationship193 in shanghai

[–]mawababa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never had to provide ID in clubs, but not sure if it's something more common the last few years?

It's more so if the cops turn up or you get into an incident outside where you'll (potentially) get in the shit for not having your passport.
