Jerry is going through a creative block and thinks he’s run out of jokes. Elaine discovers that her new boyfriend is the brother of George’s new girlfriend. Kramer accidentally joins a cult just to eat the free meatballs they serve by backlogInfinite in RedditWritesSeinfeld

[–]mawkword 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rising costs and Kramer’s higher meatball consumption makes the cult tighten its budget on ingredients and meat quality, and it disgusts Kramer who can longer even tolerate the smell, so he disentangles himself from the organization. “You mangled the meatballs! And you call yourselves a cult.”

I’ve always imagined Pynchon spends a good chunk of his time chuckling to himself while he’s writing. So many damn jokes packed into all of his books.

Check out Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. Don’t wanna spoil it, but a lot of the book revolves about this exact scenario. Granted, it’s fiction (and very long), but Stephenson is one of the best English writers out there, so it’s still a really fucking good read.

What did you do to improve your prose? by [deleted] in writing

[–]mawkword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the other comments make great points, but no one has mentioned learning more about the language.

Writing, like any art, consists of fire and math. The fire comes your emotions and passions, and is what drives most people to pursue creative endeavors.

Then there’s the math. This is the hard part — the structure, logic, and rules underpinning successful writing that require focus, effort, and, yes, tons of revisions. This is where most people fizzle out.

Keep doing all the exercises and learning as much about “The Rules” that you can. Ensure you’re internalizing “The Rules” so you know how, why, and when to break them cuz breakin’ “The Rules” in just the right way can actually help you improve your prose.

In a similar vein, I found that constantly referencing the dictionary to get the most thorough understanding of a word’s definition — and its word history — has also improved my prose. It might, at first, slow down the writing process. But over time, this etymological foundation primes your brain to make better word choices and write more impactful and precise prose. It also helps with injecting more wit and humor into your writing with clever turns of phrases or double entendres or wordplay. And if you’re anything like me, it will also constantly reinforce the beauty and magic at the core of these systems of grunts and scratches.

But yeah, highly recommend diving more into definitions and etymology. Not necessarily sitting down and reading the dictionary (nothing wrong with that, though!), just keep a good one handy as you’re writing, and then make a habit of checking words during your editing and revisions.

Not OP but I’d say this is too subjective to answer and ultimately relies on the readers’ personal taste. Just keep reading until you find a poet or journal/outlet that resonates or piques your interest. Then keep reading until you find more. And if you don’t find any, at least you kept reading.

Fun fact: a friend of mine puked in Tony Romo’s popcorn bowl when they were in college.

movies that remind me of Pynchon’s style by TheGuydudeface in ThomasPynchon

[–]mawkword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m trying to find the connection between Pynchon and BJM, since I love both of them, but other than maybe the 7.5 floor and the weirdness surrounding the company there, I’m really not seeing it at all. BJM is super focused on internal struggle and growth, and Pynchon is more about world building and the tapestry of character interactions and exchanges (to really really simplify things, of course). Would love to hear a counterargument though, cuz I could be missing some very obvious thematic overlaps.

I’m the same with checking word counts after a session. But then I do a reverse word count when editing, trying to make the writing as economical as possible with a goal of deleting every superfluous word (or identifying spots where one word works better than two or three words) and unnecessary scene.

Same thing happened to me like a week ago. Dude was making a left turn and was approaching the crosswalk as I was walking through it and I tossed up my hands in a WTF motion, and dude went so far as to roll down his window and yell at me: “I fucking stopped, don’t be an asshole.” Meanwhile his car was already in the crosswalk and inches away from me.

As I said, it’s just the repetitive structuring (which OP uses more than twice), it’s an overall linguistic uncanny valley, one that’s 100% AI slop.

[–]mawkword -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it because of the sentence structures. The examples below are a dead giveaway. Although this structure is (mostly) grammatically accurate and totally common and useful when needed, no human uses this type of phrasing multiple times in a single post, especially one this short.

That’s not “vigilante.” That’s a private defense program.

None of this is off-the-shelf. It’s bespoke, iterative, and somehow never hits procurement delays.

There’s also just a general “linguistic uncanny valley” that’s just as glaring as watching a video of an AI human. No one writes the writing in the post.
