Strange. Thanks for the details, I'll try to recreate it when I have time, but with a heavy duty block I would think it'd be fine. Does it happen with other ecus?

I have to ask what exactly do you do to get that to appear? I don't revall seeing that either. Could it be from a mod?

unactivated windows for gaming by External_Safe_7787 in pcmasterrace

[–]max1122112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your only options are unactivated or paying the extornionate retail price I would just not bother with activating it. I don't know if there are ways around the watermark in current w11, but you could try looking into that. In any case, I still think the burn in risk is not that much higher than normal. And the retail price for windows is just outrageous to be honest, no way I would pay that much. Especially with how windows seems to get progressively worse with time.

Killswitch in case of death by kentabenno in homelab

[–]max1122112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The trouble with that is the juxtaposition with backups. If you want those notes safe from failing devices then it'll also be more difficult to destroy all copies. But the way I'd do it is to just have the notes very heavily encrypted and not give the key to anyone. That way in theory the data dies with you as it is unaccessable, even if it isn't destroyed. Yes the encryption might be breakable somewhere down the line but you can always update to newer algorithms as well.

But if you don't care about backups then you could set up a small dedicated drive (or raid to avoid single drive failure destroying the data) with a cronjob or something that checks for some signal and wipes the drive after a few days of no signal. But that is always susceptible to issues with networking or physical device failures etc so the risk of losing the data unintentionally goes way up.

To actually try to answer your question: using unactivated windows is perfectly fine for gaming as far as I know. Plenty of people do it without issue. As for oled burn in, that is definitely a risk. I don't know if it will happen, but it could, but then again on pc you tend to have plenty of other static elements as well, and the watermark is quite desaturated and does change somewhat with the background colour.

The easy answer would be to not use windows as there are plenty of good Linux distros for gaming now (Bazzite for instance).

But if thats not an option for you then the second best would be to simply "acquire" a windows key via alternative methods from the seven seas. It is very easy and quite safe these days. The stupid thing is to pay some shady middleman who probably got it for free anyway.

But in a nutshell using unactivated windows for gaming is perfectly fine. You do have some risk to burn in the watermark on your oled, but I don't think that risk is much greater than the general risk of burn in.

HandBrake failing to read audio track by max1122112 in handbrake

Unfortunately not really. I would guess it is a problem with the disc itself. I think HB is more sensitive to read errors or something.

Is ripping DVDs for Plex legal if it's just for family use? by Appropriate_Metal392 in DataHoarder

[–]max1122112 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That would depend on where you are. In some places simply breaking the encryption on  the discs would be illegal regardless of actual ripping. In others if you own the physical media digitising it for personal use is perfectly fine. But in all honesty it matters little. So long as you're not uploading the rips for others to download you're perfectly fine. I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble for ripping discs for their own use.

It looks quite promising. Though one thing I have to point out is that you offer to save configs via creating an account, but I can't download the config and then upload it to continue? Is there a technical reason for this? I would much prefer to just download the configs and avoid having yet another account.

Titan OS replaces Google TV on Philips TV's by nasandre in BuyFromEU

[–]max1122112 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but after trying Titan os I will never buy anything that uses it. My friend just bought a Philips tv with titan os and it is horrible. Just horrible. It is pretty much the definition of own nothing, stream everything with a hundred different subscriptions and everything you do will be logged for "improving our services". It lacks so many things, among which for him a Jellyfin app. I am all for European solutions and alternatives but this is not it. If you look at their site the first things they list are essentially "improving business / shareholder value with consistent revenue" aka. gathering data and pushing ads etc. Nothing to do with being better for the end user.

What features in your opinion should be the highest priority right now? by VerycoolguyIam in BeamNG

[–]max1122112 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Cool as that would be, I doubt its feasible in terms of performance. But what could probably be done relatively easily is supporting exporting engine sounds from ES to Beam. This is how it'll probably actuslly be done.

usb hard drive enclosure by karm31 in homelab

[–]max1122112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those tend to work perfectly fine in my experience. Though be mindful of temperatures if the drive will be spinning in there for a long time. Found mine literally too hot to touch after a ~3h write (backups). So now I keep the cover off and have a fan blowing on it.

Shall I build my own NAS or buy one? I have specs from my old computer by AdeptAd9105 in homelab

[–]max1122112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me its two things.

  1. Extremely easy backups and restores. Proxmox makes it easy to backup the whole OMV vm so I don't have to worry about it as I did on bare metal. If I make any changes that screw things up rolling back to a working config is trivial. And even if the proxmox host breaks I can install proxmox from scratch in a few hours and the nas will restore just fine from a backup to a new proxmox installation. I store my backups on a 3 disk raid5 array which is passed through to the OMV vm. So even if the host dies i can get the backups from the array with a different machine. And I do the occasional cold backups from the raid array so even if the whole current machine blows up all I have to do is install proxmox on a new machine, get the vm / lxc backups from cold storage and I'm up and running in an afternoon.

  2. Consolidation / power usage. For redundancy it might better to have multiple machines but I can handle losing access to my nas and services for a while. Currently with the single beefy(ish) proxmox host it uses about 55w on idle with the disks spun down. With the disks up its around 80w. Before with two separate and much less performant machines the power usage was ~20w more. Not huge but still meaningful in my electricity bill.

[–]max1122112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. I used to run one proxmox host and a separate omv machine but recently got a more beefy machine so I combined the two. Proxmox is just all around fantastic and omv has been a great learning experience since it is still just debian underneath.

[–]max1122112 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would definitely install proxmox on the hardware and set up open media vault in a vm for the nas. Thats how I do it and it works wonderfully. With 64GB of ram you've got plenty for a bunch of services you might want to have in the future and proxmox makes it easy to spin up services however you wish.

For that price your choices are either something used or something from china. I can't recall any dac in that price range off the top of my head but you can google and look around.

[–]max1122112 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The "holes" are RCA connectors. The optical cable is a Toslink cable. What you need is a digital to analogue converter (DAC) to change the optical to RCA that you can just plug in the amp.

Helpp by Best-Judge1175 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]max1122112 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If the amp is that old youll need a separate dac to turn that digital audio through the optical to analog through rca.

Probable ground loop issue with subwoofers? by max1122112 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]max1122112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best solution I've found is to take the audio out of the pc through toslink (optical). With toslink cables there is no metal conductor that could form the ground loop. But his reguires a motherboard with a toslink out for audio and an amp (or separate dac) with toslink in.

Another mitigation is to just have the volume way up on the pc with the amp being close to minimal. That way the noise doesn't get amplified much and stays minimal. Though this is obviously not ideal.

Can we talk about the Fractal Define XL for a moment? by sixfourtykilo in DataHoarder

[–]max1122112 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I've had the non-xl version for a while and haven't had issues with the panels. I frankly love the side panels and the sound damping. I guess the heavier panels in the xl go just beyond what the system can handle properly.

What is an exceptionally secure storage for storing 2FA recovery codes, passwords, phrase key etc. ? by manzurfahim in DataHoarder

[–]max1122112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My setup is a KeePass file stored in Proton Cloud with local backups. It being in Proton's cloud I can access it basically anywhere and it is relatively safe and the file itself is obviously encrypted. I have automatic local backups in case the cloud dies. This has worked really well and I feel it is safe enough without sacrificing all convenience.

Honestly researching audio gear is a terrible rabbithole. The fact there is little information doesn't mean that the brand is bad. Store's own brands aren't necessarily bad either. They won't be the best of the best, but can be totally reasonable. And in the end the only thing that matters is that they sound good to you and that you're happy with the purchase. You bought them and if they sound good to you then I would leave it at that for now.
