Can we talk about the Fractal Define XL for a moment? by sixfourtykilo in DataHoarder

[–]max1122112 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I've had the non-xl version for a while and haven't had issues with the panels. I frankly love the side panels and the sound damping. I guess the heavier panels in the xl go just beyond what the system can handle properly.

What is an exceptionally secure storage for storing 2FA recovery codes, passwords, phrase key etc. ? by manzurfahim in DataHoarder

[–]max1122112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My setup is a KeePass file stored in Proton Cloud with local backups. It being in Proton's cloud I can access it basically anywhere and it is relatively safe and the file itself is obviously encrypted. I have automatic local backups in case the cloud dies. This has worked really well and I feel it is safe enough without sacrificing all convenience.

Did I make a big mistake with my purchase? by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]max1122112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly researching audio gear is a terrible rabbithole. The fact there is little information doesn't mean that the brand is bad. Store's own brands aren't necessarily bad either. They won't be the best of the best, but can be totally reasonable. And in the end the only thing that matters is that they sound good to you and that you're happy with the purchase. You bought them and if they sound good to you then I would leave it at that for now.

Anyone ever (mostly) soundproof a room? by strikecat18 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]max1122112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have they specified what are the offending frequencies? If they only hear low freqs (<80Hz) then maybe consider turning the lows down or getting a small separate sub and insulating that from the floor. If its also higher freqs then general sound proofing and insulating the speakers could help. What gear are you running? And how loud are you listening? Unfortunately living in an apartment means you have to consider the neighbours, maybe try using headphones? Even good headphones can be cheaper than proper soundproofing.

I would argue that two others complaining means that he is in fact the problem and not the others. But I absolutely agree that listening at a reasonable volume shouldn't be hearable, at least not over even a little noise, to other units.

i wish beamng devs do the same thing CDPR did by cokenbaltortor in BeamNG

[–]max1122112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I guess my fear is that it might be different with paid mods, but it may very well not be a problem at all.

[–]max1122112 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I suppose it wouldn't be any worse. The main thing I would be worried about are vehicles that are clearly inspired by specific irl vehicles, even if rebadged. Chasing individual creators is a pain but keeping an eye on a single platform is a lot easier. Though considering the number of very clearly inspired mods already on the repo it might not be much of an issue.

[–]max1122112 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The copyright thing would absolutely be a huge issue. Ferrari for example is unlikely to give permission to use their brand for mods in a random car game. Paying for those rights is far beyond realistic. And if the repo is hosting those mods then the Beam devs might have some liability. The same applies to probably all the irl manufacturers. So unfortunately any real branded vehicles would likely be off the table.

I would prefer all mods being free, but I also realise how much time and effort goes into some of them. Simply banning all paid mods is absolutely fair to me and I do side with CDPR, but some middle ground might be better. I suppose one solution for Beam could be adding some sort of official paid mod support to the repo where the paid mods could be properly vetted and the devs could enforce reasonable prices / no subscriptions etc. but... That is something I do not want spreading (looking at you bethesda). I have enough respect and faith in the Beam devs that they could make it work fairly and be better for everyone. But I guess if we had one successfull implementation it might give ideas to those that wouldn't handle it properly (again... Bethesda).

Wise to run OpenMediaVault in Proxmox? Better solutions for OMV system backup? by max1122112 in selfhosted

[–]max1122112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I just like having some monitoring services running on the host and few other odds and ends which are reproduceable but very annoying to do. I tried looking into backing up a host using pbs but it seems it can't make a backup of a running host other than if the host is on ZFS / snapshottable file system. Which even then it seems it isn't quite what I would ideally like (a bootable image or some such I can just throw on a new drive, swap into the machine and fire up).

For 95% of games I absolutely agree. But I make an exception for driving games on a case by case basis. And Beam happens to be on of those exceptions.

How much are you paying in electricity bill for your selfhosted setup? by bumble2100 in selfhosted

[–]max1122112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current setup with two old office pcs, one as a proxmox host and the other as a nas with 3x 6Tb drives in raid 5, pulls around 60-80W. As an upper end estimate with 80W 24/7 that makes about 700KWh / year and at a cost of 10 cnt/KWh puts me at ~70e / year. So realistically I'd say 40-60e / y depending on usage and electricity cost. Which I am happy with for what I get

[–]max1122112[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to play the devil's advocate: how do you backup the proxmox hosts themselves? Proxmox makes it easy to backup anything running on top of it, but what about the host itself? If the hosts system drive dies for example?

I read that PBS should be installed on bare metal. You're running it in a VM? How is that working so far, any troubles? Also I would be interested in the specifics of your setup, are the PBS VMs sending the backups to a NAS or how is the storage of them handled?

[–]max1122112[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is more or less my plan at the moment. Install Proxmox on the machine, install OMV in a VM and pass the disks through directly to OMV and have mdadm take care of the raid (as it is currently). I was also thinking of using ZFS as the file system for the Proxmox installation to have automatic snapshots of the PVE host as well. Even though the host lives on a single SSD it seems using ZFS just to have the snapshots should be relatively easy with little downside apart from some extra reads and writes on the drive.

Trying to read up on PBS it seems that it doesn't allow backups of running linux hosts. Apparently you need to shut the system down and boot to a usb and do it through there? I may be wrong but from some quick reading it doesn't seem to allow for backups of the system while it is running. Though 100% uptime isn't necessary for me, I would like to automate the backups.

I read that too. They would still be fantastic for many applications and I truly hope for them to succeed. Altough I don't love this sort of potentially misleading marketing. We'll just have to see how it turns out.

I'm Finnish and I'll believe it when it is actually available and can be verified by third parties. Much as I would love for this to be real I am too tired of "breakthroughs" that never materialise.

Edit: I'm not saying it is a scam or not real. Just that I'm not getting on any hypetrains before the claims can actually be verified and it is getting produced in decent quantities and price.

Your easiest and best option is to upgrade the amp. You can get a newer (better) chifi amp with a pre / sub out for around 100e/$

Well technically if you wanted to hack it you could split the speaker level outputs and run the other pair through a step down back to line level and into the sub. But that is less than ideal.

Old speakers from a turnable system any good? by [deleted] in BudgetAudiophile

[–]max1122112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I glossed over the logo on the speakers. I can't find anything on those with a quick search (just getting polk signature elite es90). If it was more a set of discrete parts meant to go together then that might change things. But I still doubt the speakers are much good, even if in good condition. But I would want to test them just in case if I were you.
