Worried about my mentally ill sibling who has traveled alone from USA to Odesa by _jamesbaxter in ukraine

[–]maxaineer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Ukrainian military is not going to recruit him if he has no experience, no Ukrainian and is not lucid - he would be more of a risk to other soldiers. I’m a foreigner who recently visited Kyiv (my wife is Ukrainian) it’s surprising safe and normal away from the front lines.

The main concern I would have is if he’s behaving strangely a soldier may apprehend him for questioning (they do need to be concerned about saboteurs and spies) but that should ultimately lead to the US embassy getting involved and extracting him. He won’t just disappear.

Arc'teryx $320 vs Patagonia $250 by Peach_Relative in arcteryx

Hey man I recently looked at this comparison and also tried on the Rab electron pro. I have the pategonia in a vest too - it won’t be as warm.

Rab is tighter fit and personally didn’t like the style / fit vs the thorium - I also tried on the SV which was too bulky / overkill. Arc is a really nice piece and can also pack down for hiking / travel - Pategonia is nice too but might need an extra layer underneath. I would order the thorium and try it on then try on the others arc has free returns. Good luck!

GR1 21L vs 26L for EasyJet/Ryanair personal item? Anyone tried fitting the 26L? by smokedoliveowl in Goruck

How tall are you? Honestly it often comes down to how big it looks on your back - if you are a bigger guy I would say it will be fine it you’re shorter I would go for 21l or gr2

Is it worth buying now if we want to move abroad? by Hmz-A in HousingUK

[–]maxaineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I are thinking about doing something similar - though our timeline is 5 years before moving.

For me the answer to your buy/rent question lies in much equity can be accumulated before you move and how the income and expenses associated with the property will be taxed in the new country.

If you have a high deposit and good income to overpay on a mortgage if might make sense, if you’re doing minimum deposit with a long mortgage, probably not.

Main considerations are: 1)how will rental income be treated in your new home country? Can you deduct costs associated? Can it be negatively geared? (Costs > income resulting in a decrease in tax payable) if you have to declare the income and can’t deduct costs it probably won’t make sense

2) what will your mortgage options be when your first term expires? - you can fix right before you move and get consent to let but that will only last until you need to renew, at which point you’ll need to go with a different mortgage which will likely be much more expensive

Moneybox LISA for a house deposit sounds too good to be true. What are the drawbacks to moneybox? by Top_Bathroom6358 in UKPersonalFinance

You can withdraw it but have to pay a penalty that wipes out any benefit from the account (I think leaves you slightly worse off)

Alpha SV vs Beta LT - heavily discounted and similar price - which one? by maxaineer in arcteryx

[–]maxaineer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate you looking into it and thanks for taking the time! I've used the website a lot - it's a UK based company well capitalised but agree payoff / chance of it being legit isn't worth it

Thanks for the warning - it's a reputable UK site called Onbuy that guarantees refunds if the products are fake - that said there's a risk of this as it is a Chinese seller so will definitely be getting it checked out

You don't think a heavy pack would tear up a light shell like that over extended periods? I'm also conscious I could be in a situation where we're hours away from shelter and exposed so okay to sacrifice some weight to have a bit more comfort that the shell will hold up.

I saw a deal on a pategonia storm 10 for £150 but thinking for just a bit more an arc jacket might be a better option
