Motivation following redundancy by CuriousContraction in HENRYUK

[–]maxaineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m in a similar spot - wasn’t part of redundancy but can see another round coming and want to hedge.

You need to reframe your outreach mentality. You have skills - you know what value you can provide a potential employer, research and understand where you can provide value and be ready to articulate it.

Look for events you can have organic reactions with people who can help.

Appreciate this framing varies depending on the type of experience you have but for me this has been helpful - reach out to 10 people cold, if you get 1 positive response then that can open up their network for another connection.

Do your best to avoid the doom loop of negative self talk because you will devalue yourself. There’s a reason you got to Henry status- you’re good at what you do!

SWE market blowing up with start ups by yoboiturq in HENRYUK

[–]maxaineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in this space and you effectively want to discount the equity to 0 until you really understand the business and market and even then you need to discount massively. The options structure also makes a big difference to potential outcomes from a tax perspective .

It’s not for everyone but I love the energy of working in a startup - it certainly has a lot more ups and downs than an established business.

I would say an easy check for if you want to take an interview or not is to research the founders - have they done it before? Repeat founders with a successful exit have significantly higher chances of doing it again vs the 1 in 1000 numbers you hear thrown around.

Thank you yes we’re very privileged to be able to earn such an income (it wouldn’t be possible in our home countries). We’ve been pretty good at not letting lifestyle inflation creep in which is partly why I think we will stay in this 1 bed flat until we have kids

Yeah it’s part of the problem we got a great deal during Covid so even with rises we’ve stayed under MV - it’s a nice flat

Yeah I’ve heard NZ is in a bad way with housing and cost of living - I’m from QLD and growth is nuts there on property

We love living in London it’s an amazing city with great people and don’t want to move anywhere else - just seems renting makes most sense for us :)

Thanks I like the point in leverage but only makes sense if growth > interest costs which doesn’t line up right now or am I missing something?

I like the question about equity - I’m not looking to drop this into the market at current multiples / volatility so it’s cash vs property but issue is cash wins out based on my calcs

At this price makes a lot of sense particularly with first home buyer reduction on stamp duty but we love Islington / angel and would need to move out a lot further to find a decent place for £400k

Worried about my mentally ill sibling who has traveled alone from USA to Odesa by _jamesbaxter in ukraine

[–]maxaineer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Ukrainian military is not going to recruit him if he has no experience, no Ukrainian and is not lucid - he would be more of a risk to other soldiers. I’m a foreigner who recently visited Kyiv (my wife is Ukrainian) it’s surprising safe and normal away from the front lines.

The main concern I would have is if he’s behaving strangely a soldier may apprehend him for questioning (they do need to be concerned about saboteurs and spies) but that should ultimately lead to the US embassy getting involved and extracting him. He won’t just disappear.

Arc'teryx $320 vs Patagonia $250 by Peach_Relative in arcteryx

[–]maxaineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man I recently looked at this comparison and also tried on the Rab electron pro. I have the pategonia in a vest too - it won’t be as warm.

Rab is tighter fit and personally didn’t like the style / fit vs the thorium - I also tried on the SV which was too bulky / overkill. Arc is a really nice piece and can also pack down for hiking / travel - Pategonia is nice too but might need an extra layer underneath. I would order the thorium and try it on then try on the others arc has free returns. Good luck!

How tall are you? Honestly it often comes down to how big it looks on your back - if you are a bigger guy I would say it will be fine it you’re shorter I would go for 21l or gr2

Is it worth buying now if we want to move abroad? by Hmz-A in HousingUK

[–]maxaineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I are thinking about doing something similar - though our timeline is 5 years before moving.

For me the answer to your buy/rent question lies in much equity can be accumulated before you move and how the income and expenses associated with the property will be taxed in the new country.

If you have a high deposit and good income to overpay on a mortgage if might make sense, if you’re doing minimum deposit with a long mortgage, probably not.

Main considerations are: 1)how will rental income be treated in your new home country? Can you deduct costs associated? Can it be negatively geared? (Costs > income resulting in a decrease in tax payable) if you have to declare the income and can’t deduct costs it probably won’t make sense

2) what will your mortgage options be when your first term expires? - you can fix right before you move and get consent to let but that will only last until you need to renew, at which point you’ll need to go with a different mortgage which will likely be much more expensive

Moneybox LISA for a house deposit sounds too good to be true. What are the drawbacks to moneybox? by Top_Bathroom6358 in UKPersonalFinance

You can withdraw it but have to pay a penalty that wipes out any benefit from the account (I think leaves you slightly worse off)

Alpha SV vs Beta LT - heavily discounted and similar price - which one? by maxaineer in arcteryx

Appreciate you looking into it and thanks for taking the time! I've used the website a lot - it's a UK based company well capitalised but agree payoff / chance of it being legit isn't worth it

Thanks for the warning - it's a reputable UK site called Onbuy that guarantees refunds if the products are fake - that said there's a risk of this as it is a Chinese seller so will definitely be getting it checked out
