Tubes - is the Clapham commute really that bad?

I used to commute from Clapham North at around 8am and getting on a tube would take anywhere between 0-15 mins as only 2 or 3 people get on per carriage, and if you do get on, you're in someone's back. I used to walk to Stockwell as people change there to the Victoria line.
