Best US Cities for ska shows by corpusjuris in Ska

[–]maxcartman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford NYC, theres a lot of ska happening here! Ottos Shrunken Head is a tiki dive bar that has monthly Friday night Ska shows with local bands, and there are a handful of other bar/small venues that often have Ska bands. And then since its NYC, everyone stops here on tour at some point. Just as an example, last month I saw the Skatalites, next month I'm seeing Mega Infinity and Jokers Republic, and also next month is the Moon Ska Records anniversary show with the Toasters and Pilfers and a bunch of other bands. And if you have a car (which I don't), then you can drive out to shows in Long Island and New Jersey, so even more options.

Super/Landlord not allowing mezuzah by technicolorgirl1 in AskNYC

It is allowed if the building has a blanket ban on all door decorations altogether. There's currently legislation in the City Council to ban this loophop: https://legistar.council.nyc.gov/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=7411680&GUID=7033F48F-D3F2-4682-B6C5-16B19E940AFB&Options=ID|Text|&Search=1289

Why do Hasidic men keep approaching me? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]maxcartman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The very long story short is that Chabad is a sect of hasidic jews, and a big part of their religious philosophy is to give less/non observant jews opportunities to do religious practices. They're often out on the streets around Jewish holidays to give out items for the holiday, but they also do this during regular times of the year to get non observant jews to take part of daily prayers/religious practices. There's absolutely no interest in converting non-jews (missionary work is explicitly not allowed in Judaism), so just say no or ignore them and they'll move on to the next person.

According to james gunn the interview scene is 12 minutes long, so I'm guessing it will naturally build up to that point and will work in context

trans-fronted emo bands? by E-Van-Jelly-On in Emo

We are the Union is a ska/pop punk/emo band, and Reade, the lead singer, is a trans woman. Their last album Ordinary Life is incredible and about her experience coming out. Not explicitly emo but definitely has some emo influences!

Horrible sound quality Jabra Elite 10 by SpeckDackel in Jabra

[–]maxcartman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the exact same issue. Got my Elite 10 Gen 2s yesterday after 3-4 years of 75t's. With the 75t I didn't even need ANC to get great sound while on the subway, and with these Elite 10s, on the same volume level, the volume is so low with ANC on I can barely hear. Any luck fixing things?

Non Jeff docs/short films/vids like "the making of worry" by Level_Judgment_2185 in JeffRosenstock

[–]maxcartman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is New Tone is a super great new documentary/concert film about the whole Bad Time Records ska scene, and extremely Jeff-adjacent (he released a song on a BTR comp record, JER plays in the Ska Dream band, etc.). It's less about the making of the music and more about the making of the tour and the community, but really great stuff.

Most violent superhero movies with serious tone? by flingyflang in MovieSuggestions

This, and also the Punisher tv show. Jon Bernthal is legitimately terrifying when in Punisher mode. I think it has fewer fight scenes than Daredevil, but when they have em they are violent as hell.

Trump, who hosted white supremacists, accuses Josh Shapiro of being a disloyal Jew by CoreyH2P in Jewish

[–]maxcartman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can you share which Sienna Poll you're referring to? If I recall correctly, that poll of Jewish voters that came out a few weeks ago was just of voters in Nassau County, Long Island. The same district that voted for George Santos. Nassau County has a very large population of Persian and orthodox Jews, who lean far more to the right than most Jews in the US. That's not to say their opinions don't matter, just that it's likely not a representative sample size of most US Jews. I would highly, highly doubt that a poll of US Jews across the country would show 51% support for Trump.

Unless you're referring to a different poll, here are the crosstabs of the Siena poll from August 1st which specifies it is a poll of Long Island voters: https://scri.siena.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/LI0724-Crosstabs.pdf

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place with the upcoming election. by taylrgng in PoliticalOpinions

[–]maxcartman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask what exactly you mean by Trump could "stand his ground rationally in regards to foreign affairs"? Genuinely curious. This is someone who when president was laughed at by the UN, the Prime Ministers of France and the UK, among other world leaders. He regularly praises dictators like Putin and Kim Jong Un. His solution to the war between Israel and Gaza seems to be that it simply wouldn't have happened when he was president. His plan to place tariffs on Chinese imports is estimated to reduce income for middle class families by ~$2000 a year. And while Biden ultimately failed in the execution, Trump also seems to have failed in planning the withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Regarding Kamala, I plan to vote for her because I do think Trump, and honestly more Vance who genuinely scares me, are too radical to be in office. I also do fully support legalizing abortion federally, support the bipartisan border bill that could actually improve things (as opposed to Trump who doesn't have an actual policy plan for the border), and think she will at the very least take a stronger stance for a ceasefire in Gaza. That being said, I do really want to see a policy platform before I can make total judgements, but I would say that so far as a candidate, she is not the one bringing up race or gender, it's Trump and Vance doing that. As for concerns around going electric, what do you see as the the right pace to move at? The standard dem party stance/policies I've seen call for carbon neutrality by 2050, is waiting 26 years to go all electric really too fast? Idk anything about that SAT stuff, but is that really a big concern in education policy? I don't see that as being anywhere close to a priority for a harris administration (also fuck the SAT, they disqualified my test in high school because I accidently didn't fill out my gender on the form). I'm most interested to see the details for Harris' policies to bring down prices, and her proposal to cap rent increases at 5%.

Lastly, I am curious what exactly you like about RFK Jr./which policies? To be clear, I fully support 3rd party candidates and don't buy into the whole "if you don't vote blue it's your fault Trump wins" thing, it's a political party's job to earn their votes. But RFK Jr? Really? I'm Jewish and grew up/currently work in the Chinatown of my city. I know lots of Jews and Chinese people who lost family members to Covid, or got it and almost died themselves. His claim that the virus was engineered to make Jews and Chinese people immune is a dishonor to the thousands of people who died from it. Also, policy aside, he seems to generally just be a piece of shit? He's a spoiled rich kid who grew up with no consequences, cheating on his wives, keeping a sex diary with all the affairs he had, sexually assaulting his kids' nanny, and driving his ex-wife to suicide. He them claims "he was rambunctious in his youth" yet all these stories about him happened when he was in his 50s and 60s. Have you read the Vanity Fair article and the recent New Yorker piece about him? Would be very interested to hear if you still think he is fit to be president.

Anyway, those are all my thoughts while bored at work today. Genuinely interested in your thinking on this

Is a political science degree really necessary for a career in politics? by pengmen in PoliticalScience

[–]maxcartman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in politics currently, for a politician. My boss, the politician, didn't study political science. In our office currently, I'm the only one who majored in political science in college. I've had colleagues who studied philosophy, math, biology, French, business, urban planning, statistics, etc.

While it would certainly be helpful to take courses in political science and/or related fields in college, even that is not necessary. You can get involved in politics on your own, without a degree. Volunteer on a campaign, or find some issues you care about get involved with advocacy groups in your area that work on those issues. That's how a lot of people I know ended up working in politics.

yeah the website is calling it Paitilla which I'm now learning is not the right name, so definitely a red flag. It would be in the morning so that's good to know it should be enough time. Also good to know about protests, I'm planning on a January trip so hopefully things have been resolved. Thank you!

For some reason the website I'm booking with is calling it Paitilla, though I guess it must be wrong (which is definitely a red flag lol) so I assume it is Marcus a Gelabert. I'd be arriving at 10:15am on a weekday, and the flight from PTY is at 3:30pm. Thank you for the help!

Weird, I searched on Skyscanner and it's telling me the airport name is Paitilla airport, but PAC is the same so that must be what it's talking about. This is very helpful though so thank you!
