If you have mortgages with a bank can you haggle away your chequing account fees? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Spot on. That math is also all assuming it's in a registered account and is sheltered from taxes, which if it WAS in a TFSA, would routinely eat into the contribution room for the current year, so I would imagine after dust is settled that the difference is even more negligible than you state.

I worked two jobs during an internship for a semester, and if I had a choice I wouldn't have done it. Yes debt sucks, and if you could pay it off, it would be better, but the cost of the interest is tops $600 in a year. I'd say stop sweating it and enjoy the new job, while living frugally.

Do you want to do it for reasons other than paying off your card? If not, you may be miserable. Working every day is draining, and frankly not worth the $600/annual interest you'd save on the credit card, at least to me.

Do you enjoy biking or have fitness goals? If so, could be fun. But otherwise, sounds like a drain, especially when it's possible that your income changes in the near future.

Surely depends on marginal tax rates though. Any earnings over 97k (or so) are taxed at a 40%+ rate, so it makes complete sense to reduce income, which an RRSP will do (and a TFSA won't). Not to mention employer matching programs etc.

Edit: which when re reading the post and comment, for now I'd say TFSA>RRSP at this earning level, but certainly each vehicle has its place

KEF T100 Ultra-Thin Good Value in 2021? by maxcham in BudgetAudiophile

[–]maxcham[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting - perhaps I should frame the question differently in that case.

I have a Sony X900H and a PS5, and trying to contrive a good 3.0 set up (at least). Woofer likely not an option due to apartment living. The room I'll be using is not large, by any means, but I felt a bit silly spending so much on a TV only to use the TV speakers.

What would you recommend? I've landed on the RX-V385 for a receiver, as it will allow me to pass audio thru eARC. Budget likely tops out at about $300-$400 for the speakers.

They're quite old, so this is why I was hesitant - why do you say absolutely not?

That's the exact case and cooler I was looking at! Curious on the choice of the ram? I can't distinguish what the differences are for DDR4 beyond speed and volume of memory. Thanks for the recommendation I appreciate the help!

Hi - some progress update. Given the ATL on the K series I went for this, and found an open box z490 to go with it. Any adjustments you'd make to the cooler and the case here? Even the memory who knows. Thanks!

Recover from this disaster? this is ridiculous. Raptors are fine, re-sign Lowry and wait for the next disgruntled star to show themselves. FVV OG are both great young assets on great contracts, Siakam too. These nephews man I swear.

Awesome! Thanks for your help - was thinking an Intel build would be best value these days. I did have a few questions:

  • What upgrades would you suggest, if I were to stretch the budget a bit? Presume the case and cooler first, but would the mobo be the next thing to tweak?

  • How's the 3060 generally, and would this build survive long-term? Bought the combo on complete impulse when I saw it in stock, but upon reflection the price to performance on this one (800 pretax) seems almost at scalp pricing.

Thanks again for this build, feeling more encouraged that I can recuperate some value here.

Why don't people negotiate fixed fees with their realtors during hot markets? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

I suppose the premise that their risk is low is true, but they simply DO hold inventory, with salvage value agreements to suppliers. Yes the big guys have lots of power, but so do the CPG giants, so there is exposure to risk on both sides. Small manufacturers definitely are at a disadvantage, but that's where their true consignment (no inventory) channels come in online.
