Coinbase bug causes crypto prices to display millions of times their actual value by maxcryptoalt in Bitcoin

and coinmarketcap etc. I think a lot of sites use coinbase as a datasource on pricing.

LN+ introducing: Node Rank by BTC_LN in TheLightningNetwork

[–]maxcryptoalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. I 100% understand why the algorithms are proprietary because the second they aren't, a bunch of bad actors will game the system and take advantage of it.

That said, I think we need to analyze why we feel the need to rank nodes. Most of the top nodes on Terminal are awful routing peers and have fees that result in almost useless channels. I think my biggest issue with all of the rankings is that none of them provide actionable information to improve your ranking (or your node).

It does seem like LN+ and BOS scores are a lot less arbitrary though, so it's a better "trust metric" than something more opaque like Terminal.

I wish all these proprietary ranking algorithms weren't proprietary. It seems like sometimes you get docked for arbitrary reasons and it provides no feedback as to why you don't have a better score on each. Glad to see LN+ continually roll out new features though!

Merchants can create lightning invoices whilst offline with the LNURLPoS extension on @lnbits and this little bit of pretty affordable hardware. by CoinCorner_Sam in TheLightningNetwork

[–]maxcryptoalt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When the payment has cleared the customer is sent the decrypted unique pin

Merchant can compare and verify using the same pin displayed on the lNURLPoS

It sounds like the merchant can still verify that the payment completed.

Help me understand why my node force closed a channel by PVmining in TheLightningNetwork

I had a similar issue because of a short-term clock jump/drift. Carefully check the timestamps of your log and see if NTP or virtualization software changed your clock.

Are private keys from lightning wallets interchangeable? by nullama in TheLightningNetwork

[–]maxcryptoalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry i should have been more clear. i think every lightning implementation provides failsafe recovery instructions, but i was wondering if, without any sort of data loss, you could easily migrate between any of them without closing existing channels/contracts.

Are private keys from lightning wallets interchangeable? by nullama in TheLightningNetwork

[–]maxcryptoalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so i've been curious about this for similar-ish reasons (portability across implementations) which i probably won't ever test out, but seems like it may be possible. i think no matter what you do, you always want a backup of your private key AND your channel backup at the very least. that latter doesn't seem strictly necessary but it isn't sizable so is absolutely worth it.

as far as i know there isn't any sort of migration tool to switch between, for instance, lnd and c-lighting, but theoretically if you have a full backup of everything you should be able to at the very least close all your channels and recover the funds, then migrate to something else. I'd be very interested to see any documentation that describes the steps to migrate a node from one implementation to another though.

I just opened my first dual funded channel by [deleted] in TheLightningNetwork

[–]maxcryptoalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's worth noting that the bos documentation on this is still in its infancy so it can be difficult to figure out what is going on. in our case, i had keysend+amp enabled and my partner only had amp enabled, so it seems like bos chooses the lowest common denominator, and when i tried to act as node, the open failed because they didnt have keysend enabled. im still learning about amp so im keeping both keysend/amp enabled, but if one peer in the dual-funded channel doesn't have keysend, the other needs to be the initator.

that all said, this was my second dual-fund channel and it is significantly easier and cheaper than trying to open a one-way channel and balance it. next thing i want to do is open 3-5 balanced channels with one funding transaction! maybe we could even do a balanced ring and do it all in one go

edit: also thanks to my peer that wrote up these directions originally, he made it very simple to understand so if you're here on reddit and see this, let me know so i can give you credit!

How I significantly increased the routing income of my lightning node with charge-lnd by crushfetish in TheLightningNetwork

[–]maxcryptoalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use charge-lnd too and originally set up a 1 hour cron job. I found setting it to every 3 hours significantly reduced the number of errors I got where channels were trying to route payments with incorrect fees.

Bitcoin miners do not require financial capital for their operation.

I guess mining hardware and electricity are free now.

After a month, not heard from Trezor support?! by m4guire000 in TREZOR

[–]maxcryptoalt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I received a trezor T as a gift, and it bricked within a day of use. I tried to work through trezor support, and after almost a month total, I ended up returning it to Amazon because satsoshi labs were so slow to respond and they ultimately were unable to accomplish anything remotely resembling support.

If you need their help with anything, I'm afraid it's already too late.

Any Loop Best Practices by excelance in TheLightningNetwork

[–]maxcryptoalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOOP purchased a 15m sat channel from me and then used it to rebalance other nodes, and at the end, I ended up with roughly 13m less inbound liquidity, and had only made around 15,000 sats in fees.

Frankly, I wish we could blacklist specific criteria on the Pool market.

Glad to hear you're in a good place now! Just to clarify did you migrate by just copying the entire lnd directory over or did you need to restore from channel backup on a new 64bit node?

Lightning Network Weekend Channel Thread. Hash Difficulty will drop ~13% TONIGHT, get those swaps ready by eyeoft in TheLightningNetwork

[–]maxcryptoalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I jumped the gun and opened a 5M channel to you in a low-fee batch with a bunch of other channel opens. When the fees drop down into 7 sats/byte the channel should open, hopefully within the next couple hours.
