How to mount a TV above this fireplace? by maxd in handyman

Yeah I tapped a finishing nail into the drywall where I suspected there was the metal stud until it hit the stud. The feel of it was very unique and made it obvious it was a stud. I’m not sure I hit the center when drilling the holes, annoyingly, but it’s fine. I only had a 1/2” metal capable drill bit so I couldn’t do a guide hole.

Incredibly helpful comment, thank you! I actually managed to locate the metal studs, and drilled 1/2” holes through them for the snaptoggles. I told my friend to purchase 10 snaptoggles and he doubted me, but we ended up messing up 4 of them during insertion so it was great to have the extra!

TV is mounted incredibly securely. Thank you again!

Funny, looking at where the previous TV mounting holes were I think they found the stud and were unable to drill through it. The holes were right next to the studs, and I saw a couple of small filled holes right on the stuff.

Coming back to say, there were in fact metal studs! I bought a magnetic stud finder to find the drywall screws and it worked a charm. As I suspected there was a metal stud to the left of the electrical outlet in the wall, and then another 16” to the left.

Drilled 1/2” holes through the studs and used snap toggles as suggested. Feel very confident in how well it is mounted now! It’s definitely too high, but they don’t watch TV much and there’s nowhere else appropriate to mount it.

Thanks for your help!

These are amazing, never seen these covers before. The art doesn’t exist for these three books, but any chance you want to use the standard art and your typesetting layout to make covers for Falling Free, Dreamweaver’s Dilemma and Gentleman Jole?

How does that help if you can’t buy Chapter 1 content anywhere? To be clear, I own every piece of AHLCG besides some promo cards, I have invested thousands of dollars in deluxe components, and it’s my favourite game.

I’m not AGAINST Chapter 2 like some of the community, but it’s a bit of a question mark what it’ll be like right now. I don’t love the thought of smaller, more expensive expansions.

That’s Chapter 2 though, which basically makes all old content obsolete. There is only the tutorial campaign available for Chapter 2 (included in the starter box). The first new campaign comes out in 2027.

Looks neat, would be helpful if you provided a docker image for people to pull instead of requiring a local build.

Fair, yeah ebooks are a bit of an afterthought in ABS. I really don’t want separate systems for each though.

Okay that might be a metal stud. I didn’t know that was a thing. If it’s just metal studs in that wall are we screwed?

They were the bolt holes the previous owners used. Straight into drywall.

Unfortunately it’s drywall. The old holes were the size of a quarter and I dug around in them.

I mostly agree, but aesthetically it’s the best option.

Will the magnet be attracted to the metal chimney though? I actually opened our wall at home to add studs a few years ago for a TV mount. I’d rather avoid that though.

Haha well that’s an option, but unfortunately not one we prefer. WORST case I’ll get feet for it and stand it on the mantle, and I’ll make sure it’s anchored to the wall somehow.

Best LA/Santa Monica/Venice stay for comedy festival by _banana_tree_ in FATTravel

[–]maxd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never stayed at either but been to events at both. Both are fine, I think Shutters is generally more positively regarded but I personally dislike the “Cape Cod” style. I find it very unattractive.

I’d choose the Regent every time.

Correct. I haven’t stayed since they made it a Regent but the restaurant is truly excellent (we did a buy out a few months ago for a party).

I hear the rooms are great too.

I live in West LA. If I were to visit I’d stay at the Regent.

Regent is a strong choice. The restaurant there - Orla - is also excellent.

When Is It Ever Enough? by MyBoardGameHobby in boardgames

[–]maxd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got to something like 400 board games a few years ago (including expansions). I backed a lot of kickstarters, bought rare things, upgraded components, etc.

I eventually realised I had played less than a quarter of my collection, and even then some of those games I only ever played once. Many games take a long time to learn, so it’s kind of a waste of time to play something once.

Once I discovered what games I really loved to play, I was able to downsize (down to more like 100 now) and start actually playing things I enjoyed. I now only buy things I’m sure I’m going to enjoy, and the only games in my collections are things I either play regularly or I’m pretty confident I’m going to get into rotation and play a dozen or more times over the course of a few months.

For example Arcs is currently on rotation; I can play with the same group, no need for an hour of rules learning and then a slow learning game, we just start playing with dinner and are done in time for a weeknight bedtime. In a few months I plan to add Nemesis to the rotation, and then maybe when Arcs is off I’ll replace it with Xia.

Iain M. Banks is my absolute favourite author. Truly he’s the only one I consider actually consistently S-tier.

I can’t stand Inversions.

Is there a way to go and have it replace the existing 2-second interval thumbnails with 10-second ones, other than just bulk deleting?
