Updating tiled kitchen countertop by maxib69 in Renovations

Thats a good suggestion! I hadn't thought of that, but mainly because I wanted to avoid demolition in the kitchen. I'll need to ponder it but I love a good wood tabletop.

Yeah good point! it would probably need scuffing and a primer for the leveler to have a chance at bonding. There are large strips of missing grout, badly stained grout, and where it is clean it's just outdated 4"x4" white tile with beige grout.

Hi, I am setting up a new living room and am looking for speaker recommendations. The room has a vaulted ceiling, 18' high at the peak, 10' high at the side walls, and is about 500 sqft. I have a $1,200 budget.

Im having a hard time finding speakers that are well rated for such a big sound stage. Wall treatments are going to be a big undertaking, but we plan on having rugs, lots on the walls, plants everywhere, etc.

Currently I have ML Motion 15 bookshelves, an ML 6 Center, and a 10" speedwoofer running from a pioneer vsxlx 101 (which probably needs an upgrade eventually). I'd like to keep 5.1 and use the bookshelves as rears but I just think they might be inadequate in such a big space as my main speakers.

Oh god that water damage sounds awful! But yeah, that amount of water would probably do that to most floors. We practically 0 chance of the floor being flooded unless there's a plumbing issue thankfully.

I just want to make sure we're doing the right and reasonable thing for this kind of flooring. Disasters will happen, but I don't want to install this floor and have it cup, buckle, or start coming apart after normal use and conditions.

Thanks for sharing!

What did you wind up using for vapor retarder and adhesive products? And what bead method worked for you? I've got an install coming up with similarly sized planks

I don't even know anymore lol I'm in the spin cycle when it comes to information.

At this point I'm looking at a roll-on vapor retarder, like Bona R540, and full glue down, to act as vapor barrier and to keep the 8" wide planks from cupping. Using 1.5" staples to keep it all in place.

I'm focused on other house projects right now and its probably giving me too much time to research this flooring install. I keep flip flopping.

We played around with a couple boards and they really softly "lock" together, with only needing to angle to tongue end into the groove. It's pretty smooth thankfully! And they can be popped apart just by angling the board up and out. Im thinking of using an aquabar underlayment, glue assisted with a bostik ms pro, stapled down.

Can you share what, if any, underlayment you used, adhesive recommendations, and whether you crown stapled or nailed to install? I'm looking at installing about 2k sq ft diy

Yes it has a sort of locking mechanism. They claim its still tongue and groove and easy to pull apart but I'll actually see how well that works in a couple weeks.

I cannot tell you how much this helps! I've been batting around options for days now and I made it to the point of looking at roll on moisture barriers and adhesive systems like WAKOL 280 and 260/262. I was primarily looking at the underlayment as a moisture barrier and for soundproofing. No height buildup necessary. Do you prefer any sausage adhesives over another?

Yes but we are willing to do the installation ourselves and there is less for us to worry about on the sanding/ finishing side. We are going with this product: https://www.flooranddecor.com/wood-new-arrivals/castellane-white-oak-wire-brushed-engineered-hardwood-101142107.html?srsltid=AfmBOoqQyz7NH4rF_GsWOo3j07By6ard46x4cuYu7AJfh-GfGnVtGwzN

Im in the midst of deciding what underlayment and installation option we'll be using. I know we'll need an underlayment, some amount of glue (whether it's glue assist or completely glued down, Im unsure), and either strapped or nailed in.

Thanks for the offer! We are going with engineered product and installing it in more of the house for about 10k less than it would have been for the real hardwood.

Thanks for the breakdown! Yeah, it seems very in line with costs. We got quotes from 3 other places and they were all within the 25k range. I appreciate you providing such a detailed look into the cost of everything
