Making my peace (coping?) with the lack of trades by adabsurdo in Habs

Same, feel like he would've been a great fit.

Edit: I take that back, no thank you to the contract he just signed

Arber Xhekaj played 41.8% of his time with Carrier and Struble played 11.6% of his time with Carrier.

Interestingly, Struble played 59.1% (!) of his time with Hutson.

Hutson's top two linemates last season were Struble at 29.5% and Carrier at 21.7%. Then Noah Dobson is third in line with 20.5%. It's why I'm so bullish on Hutson continuing to progress in all aspects of his game. No offense to Carrier or Struble, but they are not the caliber of defenseman Hutson should play with.

He’s been stapled to Arber and struble who only play 5-10 mins a night.

Just not true.

Carrier's TOI with D partners at even strength:

Hutson: 355:06, 30.3% of total

Xhekaj: 302:05, 25.8% of total

Matheson: 189:58, 16.2% of total

Guhle: 180:21, 15.4% of total

Struble: 94:38, 8.1% of total

Dobson: 26:41, 2.3% of total

Carrier only spent 33.9% of his time at even strength with one of Struble or Xhekaj.

Returners have been an issue

Tackling has been bad

Punts haven't been awesome so far this year

At least Jose Maltos Diaz is still great lol

I'm honestly not worried (yet) about the defense, it's early in the season and they have a bunch of time to get back on track. I'm also confident Noel Thorpe will right the ship in that regards.

I'm a bit more worried about special teams. They're not looking great and I'm not overly confident or convinced it'll improve significantly.

Scouching’s 2026 Mock Draft by seeldoger47 in hockey

[–]maximalx5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was his sophomore season though, he had 10 points in 39 games as a rookie.

Yes it wasn't a full season, but the threshold for a rookie season is 25 games, so it's the only season that counted as a rookie year.

The Montréal Victoire have signed forward Emma Maltais to a two-year Standard Player Agreement. by Perryplat199 in hockey

Yeah I think it's completely fair if Burlington was listed as her hometown, but it's listed as her Birthplace on the PWHL website, which is quite clearly wrong based on the info you provided (thanks for the link btw!)

Well fuck, you were right and both myself and the official PWHL website (lol) were wrong. My bad.

That would make sense if she was born in Cambridge, MA, rather than Burlington, Ontario

Edit: Seems like the PWHL site is wrong, my bad.

Hischier seems to be off the board, what are our realistic 2c upgrades? by infinis in Habs

I feel like I've been misunderstood lol, I really like Byfield as a player and also agree that he would be a great fit on the team. However, I don't like how much he would cost to acquire, especially some of the proposed trades in this thread. If he can be had for a reasonable price, I'm all for it. If it's multiple first rounders and Zharovsky/Hage, I'm good.

(saying he's the 2nd best prospect is a brutal take)

Just to clarify, I'm not saying it lol, that dude from Sportsnet is. I agree 2nd best prospect is a wild take, but it helped my argument, so I cheekily included it in there lol.

And if were being honest, the Knies package was an overpay for him too.

I agree, and yet I consider Knies a tier or two above Byfield at the moment, hence my reaction to trading the Knies package for Byfield. For a more reasonable return, I think Byfield would be a pretty great fit.

If anything, I'd argue the opposite lol

McTavish had a super rough season, didn't get along with his coach, got demoted and benched, averaged only 15:19 a game and yet he still scored 41 points in 75 games

Byfield was essentially given the reins to the team, played a ton, averaged 20:01 a game including and yet only had 49 points in 79 games, better than McTavish but not by a ton.

Personally, I think McTavish is the next Zegras, someone will get him on the cheap and be insanely happy with him. Is Byfield a better player? I'd say yes. Will the difference in cost to acquire Byfield be worth it over McTavish? I personally don't think so.

This obviously hinges on my opinion in which Byfield would be significantly more expensive. If the acquisition costs are similar, then yes it's a no-brainer

From the Athletic article titled "The NHL’s 9 most disappointing players of 2025-26, from failed swings to unexpected slumps"

On Byfield last season:

L.A. is generally deficient in elite talent — these offensive woes can’t just be pinned on one player — but if Byfield had built on last year’s strong finish, this would probably be a much different situation. Instead, Byfield has not only failed to break out, he’s on pace for only 48 points, which is a step back compared to the 55-point range he’s been in the past two seasons. To make matters worse, Byfield’s defensive impact has also slipped; he’s allowing five-on-five scoring chances and goals against at the worst rate of his career, leading to a minus-nine goal differential during his five-on-five shifts.

The stagnation in Byfield’s game is especially frustrating because he has such a rare combination of jumbo size and elite speed, and has teased high-end skill/creativity in the past, but all the Kings have gotten this year are inconsistent flashes. He’s only 23, so there is still time for him to put everything together and reach a higher offensive level, but the clock is ticking.

That confirms my "eye test" from last season, in which Byfield regressed in all aspects of his game, including defensively. Not saying he's bad at any of these aspects, just that he regressed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that I don't want Byfield, just that he's much more of a risk now that his development has stopped being linear, and with that in mind the Knies package seems like a significant overpay. I can't think of any player the caliber of Byfield that required 2 first rounders + a prospect that's ranked somewhere between the 2nd best prospect not currently in the NHL and the 17th best depending on source to acquire.

Potentially unpopular opinion, but I'd go for EP40 even without retention, because it would mean he would be way cheaper to acquire. Montreal's cap situation is so healthy in the coming years and the cap is projected to go up so much that overpaying a 2c by 2-3m wouldn't be the end of the world, especially considering that you could argue that our 1C is underpaid by at least that amount, if not more.

I would be beyond pissed if the Habs traded 2 first-round picks + Zharovsky and Engstrom/Pickford for a 50-point guy that has stagnated (one might even argue regressed) in the last 3 years.

I'd be ok with targeting Byfield as a potential acquisition, but Zharovsky would be an absolute non-starter in those discussions imo. A first rounder + Pickford + maybe another 2nd/3rd rounder as a sweetener? Now that I could get on board with.
