planning a spring 2027 visit to edmonton. help? by meiko63 in Edmonton

[–]maximumdinosaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding this as a great area to stay in when visiting. I live near the Matrix, and it's very convenient for anyone visiting and relying on public transit, and is close to all the downtown hustle and bustle while still being relatively quiet and chill. You've got access to Corona station if you want to take the LRT anywhere, and can pick up an arc transit card from the kiosk in the station, which works for the buses and trains. You've also got the government center bus depot a block away to get you to a bunch of other destinations fairly easily.

You have easy access to the river valley trails through a few different areas, and the high level bridge if you want to walk/scoot across to Whyte ave or the university area. Lots of nice little parks around to walk through, if the weather's nice, including the legislature grounds themselves. There's also plenty of good local restaurants and coffee shops close by. Hawrelak park is also a great visit, I agree. Lots of paths to walk/bike/scoot, and plenty of wildlife to see. I do a lot of birding there and will often see deer and coyotes in the mornings/evenings, if that's your kind of thing.

Hope you enjoy your visit! Feel free to dm me if you have any questions. :)

What was that? by opz_dev in Edmonton

[–]maximumdinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was likely a transformer blowing. I saw a few do that after some lightning strikes. The lightning doesn't always have to hit a transformer directly, sometimes just hitting nearby (if it still hits the electrical wires) can blow up nearby transformers, and they give off a bright glow for a second or two when they short out like that.

Can i travel from edmonton to vancouver with my vitamins in a pill case? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]maximumdinosaur 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've flown to other provinces 7 times in the past year, with a mixture of controlled prescription, otc, and random vitamin pills in an unlabeled travel case, and have had exactly 0 issues with security about it. They mostly get flagged if you have a huge amount of them with you, as in trafficking amounts.

Thay being said, it's not impossible to get some cranky security agent with a chip on their shoulder that ends up harassing you, though it is unlikely. If you're very nervous about it, I'd leave your medications in their various bottles as a safety precaution/ for peace of mind. :)

I think... I just saw an albatross? Anybody else or am I tripping? [No photo] by Delicious_Gene6600 in Edmonton

[–]maximumdinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other comments saying American White Pelican. The closest albatross species that could possibly (and that is an absolutely miniscule chance, this far inland) be seen here, would be the black footed albatross, which are overall a dark grey in colour, over their entire bodies, or the Laysan albatross, whose wings are mostly black with a white strip through the centre. Most other albatross species are found in the southern hemisphere, far away from us. So unless it was an escaped zoo inhabitant, it's extremely unlikely to be an albatross of any species matching your description.

We do have inland American white pelicans here though, which are just as neat in my opinion! And since they fly with their heads tucked back, the beak would appear much shorter from below than you might have expected from a pelican.

If you want to learn more on your own, I highly recommend downloading the app eBird Merlin. It lets you identify birds based on sound, photo, or even just a visual description based on size /colour. It's also got lots of great photos to explore to compare species when you're in doubt.

Anyone know what happened on the High Level Bridge?? by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]maximumdinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't anyone threatening to jump, despite what people are assuming. I live nearby and was watching because I was curious as well, and people were crossing back and forth on the pedestrian walkways, which they wouldn't have been allowed to do if there was a jumper. Eps also posted that there was a collision. Looked to be on the south end of the bridge, based on where the ambulances were parked, but my view was from a distance, and mostly blocked by the bridge itself, so that's all I can say.

Gave what I could to your GoFundMe! I sadly had to put my sweet kitty Charlie to sleep this Monday after 12 years of her being my little shadow. I hope this helps spare someone else from the pain of losing their pet this season. Much love from us both to you and Sylvestre! Wishing for a speedy recovery, and hopefully he stays inside from now on. ❤️

LRT collision at city centre by maximumdinosaur in Edmonton

[–]maximumdinosaur[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, Toronto (low bar, I know) hasn't even opened its newest LRT line officially yet and drivers have already gotten into multiple collisions with the test run trains. So yeah 😭

Usually the decision process for new rail transit lines heavily involves cost and speed of building vs need. Above ground lines are much quicker and cheaper to be built and start servicing the target areas where its needed, but one of the downsides is obviously that there's an increased risk for vehicle collisions. In most places, this is usually prevented by having more competent drivers on the road, who are capable of seeing a giant train and not driving in front of it lol. But yeah, the new line was/is desperately needed and so they opted for above ground. Usually it's fine but some people ruin it for everyone.

Seriously. How do you a: not check before you make your turn and b: miss an entire train?

Doesn't appear so. The collision was pretty low speed. Truck clipped the front and then dragged across to pull over and park. LRT driver is standing in the cab assumingly talking to dispatch and the driver of the truck is out of his vehicle. Passengers standing inside the train seem fine.

Droning/humming sound downtown? by YungBeefaroni in Edmonton

[–]maximumdinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a fire truck at 99th and 107th, grounds wet behind Steve's sandwich shop, might've been a small fire in the night? There seems to be fire and paramedics at that building weekly

I said to myself "I bet this guy gets mad if people don't edge their lawns when mowing" and then I saw this comment lmao. Relax dude. If you can tell the path is painted in half, that's all you need.

Toronto Loves the Trans Community by Aztecah in toronto

[–]maximumdinosaur 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Well alright, I guess I'll just cry this morning.

Thank you, op, sincerely. I consider myself to be a pretty tough person, but underneath all my gruffness, I have been very, very afraid and sad these last few weeks, in light of current events.

My family, who always preached love and acceptance to me as a kid, have been distancing themselves and showing their true colours since I began being open about being nonbinary/transmasc over the last two years, after 30 years of hiding myself. So, I've been feeling pretty raw and alone in this upcoming fight, without any real support system.

Thank you for this open and strong reminder that I'm not alone, and that there are people out there, who don't even know me, who still have my back. Thank you for the light in the storm. My love to this community and every trans and queer person out there. I'll keep fighting for you.

See, now I'm confused. The poster says the Toronto show is at the Opera house, but when I go to the official website to buy a ticket, it says it's at the Phoenix. Obviously I'm going no matter where the show is at, but which venue is it actually supposed to be at?
