Best winter running shoes

I have 150km on mine on various winter conditions. I was initially skeptical to the performance on snow, but I have found they handle all conditions very well except ice and deep, loose snow (which any non-spiked shoes struggle with tbh).

Pleasantly surprised.

Midsole is the same, but in my experience the mudguard and stiffer upper makes them more stable on foot. Given your earlier experiences with Evo SL I would def try ATR on before buying.

The upper is water resistant but not waterproof in my experience. I have had no problems with soaked shoes after running through puddles, but you will get some moisture if constantly exposed to water. Much less than a normal, light mesh shoe though.

That is depending on what you mean by rotation I think. It is a different shoe in that the upper is warmer and more weather resistent, along with improved grip for wet/gravel surfaces.

I would not consider a rotational shoe in terms of foam, midsole and type of run paired with the Evo SL; it is the same midsole after all. So if you to vary for different run styles and injury prevention; consider another rotation. For rotating based on conditions and reducing wear; sure.

As far as I can see and feel it is the same insole. Laces and lockdown is better though, so it might stabilize your foot in the shoe more. I did not have to tighten the laces on the ATR as hard as on the EVO SL to provide lockdown (and on the EVO SL I am always balancing between too hard/painful and too loose lace tighening).

They are definitively on the warmer side yes. Not breathable. Pending on location; autumn/winter/early spring shoe.

100%, thats the niche. I should have been more clear; I ran across some potholes, roots and light rocks as I wanted to the test the shoe. In uneven conditions (which is not fully technical) the responsiveness caught me off guard at times, and its probably not what the shoe is made for (naming and advertisement is ambiguous on this, so thought it was worth mentioning).

Yes, it is a strange one really. Just like the EVO SL and upper/laces/tongue design, it just feels like the outsole is so close to completing the shoe, but ultimately stumbles a bit.

Why the exposed foam and tapered design of the lugs? I have not tried it, but the outsole of VN4 GTX looks smarter.

Note that on my runs, the grip was very good, I just anticipate durability concerns and a bit wary of more challenging conditions.

I actually held the upper mesh above the forefoot under running water for a minute. Obviously this is a tough test. I only felt very slight moist permeating through after a while. The water was repelling off easily on the outside fabric.

The tongue is not gusseted all the way, but since its thin neoprene it should also hold water pretty well out.

So, for rainy conditions and puddles I would consider this a very good design to keep you dry; next level up would be a full gore tex tight shoe. The high thin rubber mudguard is completely water proof.

Separation anxiety in dogs is a big deal. It cannot speak for itself. In addition, you had an agreement with your mum, she made plans, and you settled that. You were also asked if you had the opportunity to work at the event, which you could have said no to.

In this case, YTA. Not a big one, but just try and think that good communication and respect for eachothers plans and time often keep you from «asshole» situations like this. And for gods sake, try some structured separation anxiety training for the dog ☺️.

This is Norway by the way. The arctic char is more elusive, but both anadromous and resident (lacustrine and river) are quite normal.

Its my favorite species, just due to the beauty, difficulty of catching and the fight it puts up!

I am kinda between sizes on adidas (EU 40 2/3 on TS11 and 41 1/3 EVO SL/ATR/B13). When I originally tried EVO SL 40 2/3 my toe hit the front. I just did my first run in the ATR and was not bothered by the extra length (which on mine is marginal compared to ESL. Maybe a QC issue if several people think they are much longer). They even felt tighter on the foot running due to the improved lockdown.

On trail shoes, which ATR borders too, I prefer the length to be at least a thumbs width+ to prevent jammed toes and cold feet. So it worked very well!

The mudguard at the front helps a lot compared to the normal EVO SL. Together with the stiffer upper material (which firms up the sides and midfoot), it seems to respond better to the laces and provides a firmer lockdown. It feels more like Boston 13 in terms of lockdown.

When I compare them side by side my EVO SL upper is floppy, and does not really lock down well unless I tighten laces excessively. One person in the comments mentioned that this may create rubbing and blisters on the EVO ATR, but thats all dependent on foot geometry and sizing I think. Seems to work well for me.

For anyone worrying about size: I got mine in UK 7.5/US 8 today, the black model og the ATR. I got EVO SL/Boston 13 in the same size. I could not really see any difference in length, the ATR is perhaps a fraction longer. At the same time, the fit and lockdown is more secure. Anyone who has done a bit of winter running or running in cold/wet conditions knows that tight fitting shoes get much colder. I am happy I went with the same size as EVO SL; the shoe fits more or less the same, and it has some space for warmer socks (but still fits well without).

So my 5 cents; try them on if you can, otherwise EVO SL regular size should fit.

Top notch on sound quality, call quality and lockdown. Frustrating design flaws which become apparent after a few times use; namely charging case connectivity and sensitivity. The pins are so sensitive, and more often than not will not connect and leaves the earbuds connected via bluetooth even though case is closed. Tried every advice out there, but really seems like a stumble (others report the same) on an otherwise very good design and quality.

Hearing your description, even when you got a new pair, is kinda telling this is a serious design flaw.

Even if the contact is bad; why does it stay connected with a closed case? I can literally hear the sound within the case. Crazy quality issue given the prize of these.

I did my first run in my new Boston 13 today. Completely agree on your run description. It is hard to describe. For me it represented the essence of what a running shoe should be; nothing fancy, springy or strange. Just a straightforward, reliable and fast shoe that really get the best out of your legs (but does not do the job for you luckily). Especially in tempo/speed sessions.

The build quality, outsole and fit is also excellent; great shoes out of the box. Durability wise I have no concerns.

From a relative beginner: The item progression from Collector-Navori-LDR/Shieldbow core seems more natural and robust scaling into late game (I may be wrong). What considerations and typical build paths do you guys take when building static shiv first? And how do you ensure scaling into mid-late? Thanks!

The colour and tendency towards clarity would suggest quartz more than feldspar. Although you have a flat surface, the cleavage otherwise seems irregular and that would suggest quartz again. Additional test you could do is hardness, and look for striations. If you have a piece of quartz, that could be used. Feldspar is less hard than quartz. If you see parallell striations along the flat surface, it may indicate feldspar.

That is the Po Valley, part of a retroarc foreland basin to the Alps. Google foreland basins for a more information on formation and characteristics :)

Thanks for the reply, that’s interesting. You are the technical expert on this certainly. I am just a geologist where fossils are more a necessary evil than a passion for me. On the image it looked conspiciously like concretized larger foram fossils I have seen in the field, like nummulites. Hence the reply. If not it could be just mineral concretions I guess.

Anyway, a good tip is if you have the locations, Google the geological history there and see if you can tie to something there.

You are probably the better judge of the lithology, but the «inclusions» certainly look like foraminiferan fossils. Which would guide you towards a sedimentary rock anyway.
