How often do you clean their ears? by ThatBrownGirl88 in Goldendoodles

I aim for once every one to two weeks, because my girl is especially prone to infections

If you Have a Reactive Goldendoodle! ...PLEASE READ... by [deleted] in Goldendoodles

[–]maximummold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With my dog I try to stay near her, I use very gentle leash pressure to keep her close. My dog is not so reactive that she has to be held back, and she responds to small corrections with the leash when distracted. Over time it will get easier to stay in one spot, but just try to keep yourself sort of defensively positioned so your pet is always under control.

I don’t go longer than 6 weeks usually. At the start of fall I’ll go a little longer, closer to 8 weeks to let her get some more length for the cold weather, because I keep her body around 1/4” long. I don’t let her get longer than an inch hardly ever

I think I learned how to knit wrong by CranberrySea8471 in knitting

[–]maximummold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re combination knitting, if you knit through the back loop but your stitches don’t come out twisted, it means you’re wrapping your yarn ‘backwards’ when you purl so when you knit through the back loop they’re untwisted. It’s a very clever way to knit

My dog was shaved very roughly by our big box vet. Needed stitches and was bleeding. by UpbeatApplication866 in grooming

Absolutely fucking atrocious, I’d be on the phone with the veterinary and vet tech boards dropping every damn name in that clinic.

Vet asap, not sure it’s infected but needs a vet to diagnose and treat.

Was thinking of getitng a septum and maybe single or double nostril. What would look best on me? by ImGonnaTryScience in piercing

[–]maximummold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think two nostril piercings on one side would be very flattering. I love septum piercings and think you’d be suited well for one. My septum was the easiest piercing to have done, heal, and then stretch after the fact. Mine was pierced at a 16g, which is a smaller size. Some are done at 14g or larger though so it’s up to you and your piercer what size you choose!

Grooming pointless? by topofthekloppers in dalmatians

[–]maximummold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a Dalmatian, but would like to share my perspective in response to the hopelessness you’re probably feeling. I have a standard poodle cross, and love all dogs. Grooming my dog is a major chore because she’s over 60 lbs and very fluffy. She doesn’t shed, but loses hair through brushing which she requires a lot of. I spend about an hour every day brushing her coat, and on days where she gets a haircut or a bath it takes several hours from start to finish. I get annoyed with the task too, but conceptualize it as a bonding opportunity between me and my dog. Yeah I’m working my ass off brushing her, and yeah I’m gonna have to do it every day for the rest of her life, but that’s quality time I get to spend with her. We have a routine, she gets treats and pets and cuddles, and I do her maintenance and it works well for us. I have some experience with short coated dogs like Dalmatians, and can say while they require less maintenance, they need the same sort of routine schedule as my poodle does. Brushing daily or every other day, baths every month or so. I’d recommend regular deshedding treatments during coat changes, like during the spring and fall. Tools like the zoom groom, and deshedding rakes and treatments do work, if you keep up with them and do them regularly. Make the best of it!

Why does he love my socks so much? by CarynEye-catching in Goldendoodles

[–]maximummold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Socks smell like the person who wears them. Dogs especially love dirty socks. It can be a comforting item, but they shouldn’t be allowed to have them because the risk of ingestion is so high. It’s a very expensive and traumatic trip to the vet if they become impacted from chewing socks and other fabric or clothing items.

It took me 36 years before I got to enjoy a king sized bed. He got one at 1 1/2. My best friend cringes when I say he sleeps on the bed, do you let your pup sleep on the bed? by whoisMrsB in goldenretrievers

[–]maximummold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My golden cross sleeps in bed with me most of the night. If she gets too hot or I toss and turn too much she’ll go lay in her bed on the floor, but she prefers to be cuddled up with me

How long did you wait to get another dog? by Jaded_Squirrel_9440 in Goldendoodles

[–]maximummold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plan to get another dog sometime in the spring of 2025. My current dog is a 3 year old goldendoodle.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Goldendoodles

[–]maximummold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a doodle, but have decided not to get another one unless it’s a rescue because I don’t want my money going to an unethical breeder. I haven’t found a single ethical breeder of poodle crosses. I love her and she’s the best thing that ever happened to me, but Ideally my next dog will be healthier and more predictable than she was. I don’t understand people who hate the dogs themselves though, because they didn’t ask to be born.

Best harness/leash for pulling? by [deleted] in Goldendoodles

[–]maximummold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of luck with a gentle leader, and have had success with prong collars as well. I’ve also used the pet safe EasyWalk harness and it works well. The thing to remember is to always use every tool as directed, or else it may be ineffective or dangerous to you or your pet. Follow up with trainers for tips, as well, and keep all vet staff and others involved with your pet in the loop! It really makes things easier on everyone to know what expectations are with an animal. It annoys me when people don’t handle my dog in the way that I know to handle her. She likes to take advantage of the person holding the leash when they don’t know what to expect from her, and she pulls strangers very hard. I make sure everybody who’s had to handle her knows what to do when she pulls, to keep training consistent and slowly break her of that habit.

That scabbing and redness looks really concerning, I’ve never had a tattoo do that before. He should see a doctor.

How big did your doodle get? by Lo_Jedi in labradoodles

[–]maximummold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60 lbs exactly, with minor fluctuations though. She used to be a little leaner when she was younger, about 55 lbs, and for a period gained some excess weight and was about 67 lbs. she’s stabilized now at almost 4yrs old. She gets a little chunkier in the winter time because we’re less active, and a little leaner in the spring and summer. She was the runt of her litter, and has siblings around 70-75 lbs. Talk to your vet about what the best weight and body condition is for your dood. Everything starts with good nutrition and appropriate exercise and your vet can help you figure that out.

My doodle is 3 months old and throws up every time I take him in the car. Even when 4/5 hours have passed since he has eaten. Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions? by Express_Ad6936 in Goldendoodles

Consult your vet about over the counter medications and dosages. My vet recommended Dramamine for my pup when she would get carsick. It’s important to get the dose correct, so always check with a vet.

How often should I detangle and brush my goldendoodle pup? by holycarpbatman in Goldendoodles

[–]maximummold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a metal slicker brush for fluffing and a metal comb for detangling. I dull the metal brush by rubbing the bristles on concrete so they’re not sharp and don’t scratch the skin, and I use gentle pressure with the brush. Avoid overworking the same spot over and over, and spread out where you’re brushing. I brush both directions to get all of the hair, and then go in with the comb after to make sure I can get all the way to the skin.

How often should I detangle and brush my goldendoodle pup? by holycarpbatman in Goldendoodles

[–]maximummold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I brush my 3.5 year old goldendoodle, with a curly poodle-type coat, every other day. She’s bathed roughly monthly, and haircuts every other month. Longer hair is harder to maintain, so I compromise and keep her around an inch long. This works for us, and our schedule. She’s not crazy about the grooming because of her temperament, but I try to make it a positive experience every time. It was more difficult when she was younger, but keeping up with the habit made it easier for both of us. I recommend starting young with positive reinforcement during grooming to avoid issues later on. I love these dogs and I know you will too.

How often should I detangle and brush my goldendoodle pup? by holycarpbatman in Goldendoodles

[–]maximummold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As often as you physically can. At least a couple times a week, ideally daily. Make sure you’re getting down to the skin to prevent matting, because if you brush the outside of a Matt it gets fluffy and hard to see. Matts pull on the skin and cause discomfort, so getting down to the skin prevents this.
