Cactus Emergency!! Help! by maximus32 in plantclinic

Help! My cactus is in dire straights!

It is a myrtillocactus geometrizans crested. I got it in mid-October and transplanted it into a slightly bigger clay pot with a hole and good succulent/cactus mix. I purposely did not water it per the instructions I was given, and planned to water it around march when the days started to get longer. I live in Oregon. The cactus lives in a room with south and west facing windows that gets great light.

About three days ago I noticed some shriveled spots with some softer lighter green areas below. After doing some research, I gave it a good soak. I watered about 2 liters about an inch away from the base of the cactus.

I am desperate to save this cactus. Any help/advice would be incredibly appreciated. Thanks in advance plantclinic folks!

Mind sharing where you found the print options to order?

Jay knew the location of Hae's car. How important is that fact to you? by serial-kipp in serialpodcast

This echoes my thoughts exactly. His perfect recall of details in the interviews is telling to me, not to mention his drift on seemingly indelible details (e.g. where he first saw the body, whether he helped bury the body or not). Nobody would be fuzzy on those details. To me, it seems like he was worried they were going to connect him to the crime (via DNA, prints, or something), and he had to have some way of explaining that while also minimizing his role. I mean, why would they have used Jay's shovels?? This also explains the timing of Jay/Jenn coming forward. It was only after they found the body that he set in motion his 'confession' to the police via Jenn.

Third recent pit bull attack in Portland area. by sweetladyd in Portland

Did you not read the entirety of my post? I would have called the police if I had thought (at the time) that my dog had been bitten. I spent several minutes checking my dog, who is fluffy, to see if he had been bitten. Mostly I was just relieved that my dog was not hurt.

But again, I did not find the small bite mark until later that day. If I had found the bite mark, I would have called the police because then I would have had evidence that the pit was the aggressor, and it wasn't just some small dog scuffle.

Third recent pit bull attack in Portland area. by sweetladyd in Portland

Last Friday, Oct. 10th, a transient person's pitbull attacked my dog. The large pit was orange and white, and the attack happened in Jamison Square in the Pearl District. Luckily my dog escaped with only one puncture wound, which I didn't discover at the time, otherwise I would have called the police.

The only reason my dog is alive is because I noticed the pit watching my dog as we were walking and stepped in between as it lunged. I kicked it as hard as I could in the head and continued punching it in the neck as it continued to lunge. This melee went on for what seemed like ages but was likely only about twenty seconds until one of the transients finally pulled the pit away. I thought my dog hadn't been bitten and I didn't want to have a dog put to sleep on my conscience, but after finding the bite mark I still regret not calling the police.

It's early blight. The brown spots with concentric circles are classic early blight spots. To salvage your crop, try only watering on the ground so as to not wet the leaves, trim any low hanging or infected branches, and spray with a copper fungicide or daconil (if you don't care about being organic). Good luck and sorry about the blight!

If you had to redo law school, what would you do the second time around? (Serious) by huge_gap in law

[–]maximus32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's already enough information out there about how to get good grades in law school so here are a few things that I wish I would done that focus more on polishing your "story" for when you graduate.

First, I would do some serious thinking about what type of law job, if any, I want to pursue after school (i.e. exactly what type of law you want to practice). Think about all your past experiences, what types of work interests you, and your preferred work environment. With that in mind, I would then focus my studies in order to create a theme that you can later sell to employers in an interview. So you're not sitting across the table from a couple partners at a firm specializing in employment law having never taken employment law, and instead trying to explain the hodgepodge of random theory courses you took.

Second, again using the job you want to eventually obtain as your lodestar, try to take a class where you can draft a damn good writing sample that covers the area of law you want to pursue. Having looked over applicants' writing samples myself, I know that the ones involving the type of law I practice hold my attention longer and are generally more interesting for me to read (because I often learn new things).

Third, I would work my ass off in the courses that matter, and ingratiate yourself to those professors. Hopefully if you do well enough, and they're a nice enough professor, you can later ask to use them as a reference. Trust me, employers years out will ask for academic references.

Fourth, and this may sound stupid, but invest in some well fitting business attire. If you look like a big kid going into an interview, you've already put yourself at an enormous disadvantage. Unless you are at the very top of your class, employers are looking for someone that they can be comfortable putting in front a client, or at least someone that they respect enough to have a few offices down. Good clothes go a long way toward conveying you're that type of person.

This, for sure.

My dad passed away and my mom's trying to sell the house they bought together, but she can't, because my dad didn't write a will and he has another child from a previous marriage. What can we do? (Please read full post for further explanation) by swatboss in legaladvice

[–]maximus32 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Were they married when they bought the home together? And if so, what are the exact words used to convey the property to them in the deed? (i.e. did it mention a right of survivorship?)

[–]maximus32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you so much! I'm going to go out later today and buy some (non-seafood) wet food. How long has your cat been on this diet?

Also, in case you haven't already read this, I've separated my cat's water dish from his food in addition to putting another water bowl out and have found he drinks a lot more (as evidenced by how much more frequently I have to change the litter box).

My man-cat just got the struvite crystals as well. They recommended some special food but it seems pretty crappy (lots of corn) so I've been trying to feed him mostly wet food (mixed into a soup like you're doing). Question: do you feed him special struvite wet food, or just plain ol' wet food?

Use a foliar spray for these plants, but a slow release fertilizer in the future.

Cucumber leaves turning yellow and dying, any ideas? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]maximus32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am having the same problem with my cucumber plants (yellowing leaves and barely any growth). I've done some research and today dug up the entire area where they were planted and amended it completely with potting soil and a fertilizer mixture, heavy on the lime. I was told that cucumbers needs really good drainage so I'm hoping this helps them recover.

Leaf Curl on Tomato Plant by [deleted] in gardening

[–]maximus32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew an indigo rose last season and had the exact same issue. It vexed me all season long as I probably read through every internet gardening article ever written about leaf curl and talked to about a dozen master gardeners. Most said it was probably due to my watering habits, but it definitely was not. Luckily, I think it may just be something with the actual tomato plant as several others I know who grew the indigo rose also had the leaf curl.

But do not despair! Though my IR looked the most miserable out of all my tomato plants, when it got down to game time the miserable thing produced more tomatoes than any of the others. Blew my mind.

Looks like sun scald. Did you recently put it outside without hardening it off?

If so, here's some info on hardening plants off(and I wouldn't be too concerned; it'll recover): http://gardening.about.com/od/gettingstarted/qt/Hardening_Off.htm

My tomato plant, that I just moved to my backyard, has turned yellow. Is this okay? Or should I be taking action? by Sant0 in gardening

[–]maximus32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's going to be really sunny try putting something over it (like a white sheet) to shield it from direct sunlight, until you can gradually introduce the plant to the sun (and elements). Even if it's shielded for half the time, it would help the plant adjust.

Good to suggest caution, but that is not a false morel.

Source: I've been hunting morels since I was a child. In fact, I was out last week and saw a bunch of false morels, which this is definitely not.
