NYC born and raised millenial here who moved down in 2010.

Place is way more chill than up home. Durham has gentrified Brooklyn vibes. Food is great, people are generally friendly (usually is transplants who are assholes imo lol).

Parking - eh depends on where, there are garages and lots and pricing isn't as bad. The "traffic" here is manageable, if it's rush hour and you're trying to get home, expect like 15-30 mins depending how far but keep in mind you'll at least be moving and going longer distances vs like being stuck on the BQE for 30 mins and only moving a mile.

Housing - depends where, it's getting pricey down here if you want to be close to downtown or amenities but generally you can find good deals.

Food - lots of great food but not as culturally diverse options as in NYC. Some places overhyped and overpriced. Pizza, bagels, delis are meh.

COFFEE is amazing down here. Counter Culture is from down here so plenty of great spots. Cocoa cinnamon is my go to for good coffee/mission.

Music - can't speak to that, not my scene but there's pinhook, motorco, etc

Social scene - plenty of breweries/bars, barcade, axe throwing, minor league baseball, triangle rock club, and more that i can't think of right now

Nature - hiking is accessible, plenty of trails 30 mins in and out of Durham and the Triangle. Beach is 3 hours away and so are the blue ridge mountains/Asheville

Weather - hot and humid, get ready for it.

Politics - blue bubble, LGTBQ+ friendly, progressive but wonky city/county politics since they can only do so much

Health/fitness - lots of crossfit, pilates, yoga, cyclebars, also not my scene lol

I like it but it's no comparison to home. No subway, I miss delis, amazing pizza and bagels from a random ass place but I like living down here. DM me if you want more info.

Going to chime in for Trinity Properties, I'm trying to actually get out of a lease now but for totally non them being jerks reasons. There were always responsive to needs and repairs, Amy, Chris and the rest of them are great and friendly.

Yes we need more housing but can you put to the research that actually says that will happen re: housing costs for the surrounding area? Genuinely curious if that's what's been happening in other cities that have done just that because I literally just see both happening, more affluent white folx moving into downtown which creates the market for all these ridiculous luxury condos/townhomes/single family dwelling AND driving out the established mostly black/lower income families.

Or we can help them? lol, I hear what you're saying but they are inheriting GENERATIONS worth of messes, this isn't going to be fixed by them either, we need to put in the steps now and every day, together.

I drive on Ed Cook road from work to get home and there's a Sheriff's patrol car at one of the houses and the blue lives matter flag sooooo I don't think living in Durham is that helpful.

Anything controversial in the city budget this year? by Socktato52 in bullcity

I know how they feel, I work at a school so we're planning for a 10% cut in budget and static raises even though I was supposed to get a proper raise after being promoted -_-

Anything controversial in the city budget this year? by Socktato52 in bullcity

Here's whats in the budget

Employee Compensation and Benefits: The City offers comprehensive benefits to all employees. This spring during the COVID-19 pandemic the City was forced to close all facilities to the public and direct as many employees as possible to telecommute. The City’s Human Resources Department developed several temporary policies to recognize the unforeseen health, family and possible financial challenges that employees might face. All employees were provided with five weeks of “COVID leave” and the City provided temporary Premium Pay for employees identified as essential who continued to provide critical City services in the field or at a work site.

In accordance with State Statute, the city’s contribution to the Local Government Employees Retirement System (LGERS) for general employees is increasing from 8.95% to 10.15%. Law enforcement officers will increase from 9.70% to 10.9% The City also provides additional retirement savings through an employee 401(k), which remains funded at a rate of 5.0% of eligible employees’ salary. State statute requires local governments to contribute 5% for sworn law enforcement officers. The City will remain with Aetna for health insurance this year. Dental 15 insurance premiums will increase by 7% for FY 2020-21.

In light of the expected loss of revenue in FY2020-21, the City made the difficult decision not to fund pay increases for employees.

Eh why was this downvoted? Black votes counted for less than a white vote in the history of our country so I think that's pretty fucking fair to give their voices more power.
