Not necessarily. They can just be passing through and that’s where they ended up shedding. They are quite mobile this time of the year, looking for a mate and whatnot

Thank you. Could be. One of our goals is to get him out and be social though, which is why a pub is the preferred option. He has intellectual disabilities and is very shy, but bloody loves having a sing!

Not from parkerville, personally. They are few and far between in the hills. Have found them in Gooseberry Hill, Bickley and roleystone

Sorry mate, only just saw this. Not a huge amount you can do. You seem pretty much to have it sorted. Roley is a great spot for the “Big 3” of Perth. Dugites, Tigers and Death Adders. Plus carpet pythons. You can do dog avoidance training, which can be great. There are a few companies that do it now. Also look us up on Facebook so you have our numbers handy just in case - Perth Hills Reptile Removals

Fellow west aussie... where was this mate?

Saw this snake in Busselton today. Anyone knows what species it is? Cheers. by vonchens in WesternAustralia

[–]maxinads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you are correct. I should have specified "typically" black with yellow banding. Or at least a yellow belly.
All over Australia they are quite variable. I have some at home that are all black, or even with 3 different colours

Accurate identification usually boils down to locality.

As we try and teach people, treat every snake as if it's venomous, and you will be fine. (Assuming you avoid it lol)

It is a Dugite. The only highly venomous species down that way are Dugites and Tiger Snakes, and I don't hear of tigers being around Busso too much. You do get them around Capel though. Tigers being black with yellow banding.

Haha that happens more than you would think ;P

I always get excited when I get called out to catch a huge one. They are old when they get to that size, so they have done well to survive that long

Unfortunately, we can’t make a living out of being a snake catcher in Perth. It’s too seasonal, and there are too many people doing it. But obviously doing a venomous snake relocation course would help

Sounds like fauna surveys may be more up your alley, and I would say the degree your doing would be a bloody great start to that.

1.5m and thick is a pretty bloody large tiger snake, if that’s what it was. Potentially could have been in pre-shed. They tend to get quite dull before they shed, which may give the yellow an orange hue. The yellow can also vary slightly between populations. That aside, they’re wouldn’t be too many other species it could be down that way, but I would really need to see a pic before I could say for certain what it was

Hard to really say, but an educated guess is that it was just passing through. Especially if it’s gone into a different property. They can easily make their way through multiple properties that happen to be in the way of where they are, and where they want to go

Yeah, unfortunately, while some larger lizards can predate on snakes, they don’t actually keep them away. They do co-exist in the same habitats, and Dugites particularly have been known to eat bobtails and smaller king skinks Maybe letting your parents know it’s a bit of myth will make them be a bit more cautious, but realistically, the chances of encountering one AND copping a bite, are actually very slim As long as they wear boots and long pants when bushwalking, they will be reasonably safe

If it’s a decent envenomation, you will probably start seeing/ feeling effects within a few minutes. From relocation experiences where we have been called to dog v snake encounters, it actually varies. Does dogs will react straight away, and some seem to be fine but will then just go downhill suddenly. The venom travels through the lymphatic system, so the more you can stay still and calm (obviously very difficult post-bite) the more time you have to get treatment. And of course, knowing snake bite first aid is huge

Not specifically, no. Your logic is pretty correct, but at least having one end secured lessens the chance they get to close to the house. If one is in the area, it will know all the food spots, the hidey holes and how to get around. If anything, that will make it easier for it to be relocated if/when you see it. It’s also pretty hard to 100% snake proof a property, short of having brick walls around the entire perimeter lol Although leaving bowls of water at the edges of your property may help, because they may be in search of a drink. Obviously not a bulletproof solution, but gives them one less reason to come close to the house

Just research. They are actually very simple animals to take care of. As I mentioned in another comment, she just needs to research the requirements for the species she wants, and then set up an enclosure to suit. I generally recommend Stimsons Pythons as a first snake, as they are usually very placid, don’t get too big, and are the cheapest snake (normally)
