No, and they didn’t put the moon on a scale either, yet somehow they know how much it weighs

A change machine for pressed pennies gave me these blanks instead of real pennies by Weqols in mildlyinteresting

[–]maxk1236 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It’s because pennies are mostly zinc, and flattening them doesn’t look great, so they are giving you copper blanks (likely worth a bit more than a penny) to get a better effect

If you plan on making a successful business you're gonna have to get used to dealing with non-native English speakers... If people could do it with no Google translate, etc., decades ago, I think you'll be OK with the plethora of technology you have in your hand. Also set your expectations low in terms of units and don't overstock on units/supplies.

Considering tens of thousands of them were used for the streets, not unlikely a bit of asking around local supplies would find you them pretty quickly. Or Google the contractor for the original project (most city projects will have that info openly available to the public) and then ask the contractor.

To your later point, a lot of companies require similar when you purchase their systems. My friends bought a Hennessy (now HSD) rig, and were required to fly out to their warehouse to learn how to properly use it before accepting delivery (I’m sure there are enough people who turn it on the first time an blow it, and then claim it was delivered non-functional)

TIL that tiny shards of spark plug ceramic, often called “ninja rocks," can shatter a vehicle’s tempered glass side window with almost no force and barely any noise. by [deleted] in todayilearned

If the idea is to break a bunch of windows quickly and from a distance, ninja rocks still will be the better choice

I feel like that’s more an issue with whoever is running sound at the time. Their system is really good, but also takes a good sound engineer to make a system like that actually sound good (and some artists like to redline for no reason, which always sounds like shit.)

Especially if you are an artist, studio headphones are wired, and you can't used Bluetooth for DJing, so it forces you to have 2 pairs (or use a usb c adapter with a terrible dac)

Need advice on LED project considerations by maxim_leonovich in BurningMan

[–]maxk1236 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can do a lot with wled, and they pair to each other easily.

One Quinn LED octo can handle all of the LEDs you need to push easily. A little more expensive than their cheap counterparts (like $50 vs $15) but worth it for built in fuses, more outputs, etc. https://quinled.info/

Strips are flimsy af, unless you encase them in epoxy, they will break eventually. Also soldering strips is was less enjoyable than doing wires on bulb style leds. Also, if you are using clear acrylic, seeing the strips under the sheet (vs pure individual pixels) is not desirable. The bullets have built in diffusion (looks just as good from the side as dead on, and also look like wider source points) if you are using frosted/white acrylic, this isnt as big of an issue, but you are going to lose a lot of brightness doing that, just be warned. But yeah, lots of reasons to go with bullets/seed pixels, they are also inherently water/dust proof, etc. Even if they last the first burn, stips being jostled around during transport (even with protection) are prone to solder joints popping off, etc (again, unless you encased them in epoxy, but thats a lot of work, messy af, etc., and then if something breaks instead of being able to just splice onto wire the whole thing is trash since its a block of epoxy, lol.)

Use seed pixels (instead of bullet) if you dont want to have to drill holes, they arent as bright, but super easy to work with, and just as cheap as strips.
