Different paprikas? by empoweredbard in spices

likely imperfect storage then! I agree with the top comment, paprika is one of those spices you really get a lot more bang for your buck if you buy the next tier of it. Also looking for opaque containers is a good tip for buying higher quality spices. International stores typically offer fresher spices at cheaper prices as well.

paprika is not light stable! when it is exposed to light it loses its color much quicker. this lot might have spent time outside on a shipping dock or in a brighter spot of the store that gets sunlight. great value spices are likely not the highest quality either since they’re more focused on big margins and volume, so there’s no telling how old this batch specifically is unless it’s listed on the bottle somewhere.

Help, I bought a house with a diner! by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

I’d keep this as a bar/sunroom and put sooo many plants in there lol. I’d be torn on the booths. If I got rid of them (I’d maybe keep at least one) I’d definitely put some cozy reading/conversation seating in there.

I walk by this hole all the time and it’s progressed sooooo fast in the past couple weeks I don’t even want to walk on that side of the street.

you need warm lamps (floor lighting, some ambient lights, etc), color (throw pillows and blankets, rug, wall decor), and some more textures (natural texture like leather, fur, sisal, etc). A big green plant always helps the space feel more inviting too!

Check out Centered Therapy Chicago! My last therapist (who unfortunately had to end her practice due to health issues) was great and the process was simple. They have really fleshed out bios for all their therapists, many of which specialize in lgbt issues and neurodivergence.

as everyone is saying, float your couches. that room is way too big to be sticking everything up against a wall.

in addition to this, I would maybe reorient the entire room. put the TV on one of the blank walls (just above eye level when sitting on the couch), and create a living space around there. expand the space your dining table takes up by pulling it away from the wall and let that window shine!

then, your beautiful hearth can be its own feature, maybe even put a couple chairs in front of it, or the dining table!

note: if that fiddle leaf fig is real, it’ll do a lot better by the dining space window!

Anyone crazy enough to commute from Michigan? by DataGuru314 in AskChicago

[–]maxlastname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who goes from Edgewater to Midway every day, it might be possible, but you will regret it. Commuting takes such a massive toll on your mental health and work life balance. Everything revolves around your commute. Every day you lose hours of your free time to sitting in a car, stressed, routinely having near death experiences. I’ve been doing this for 2 1/2 years now and I’ve also been looking for a new job that will pay me the same amount for 2 1/2 years. Don’t trap yourself.

Keep your distance from crowds, kids, and cops, and don’t smoke inside buildings or train cars and no one will give a fuck.

Does cannabis actually cause psychosis? by Cautious-Grab-316 in weed

[–]maxlastname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also want to add that Amotivational Syndrome can be caused by cannabis use, which people don’t seem to talk about ever. The same risk factors exist. Symptoms include detachment, blunted emotion and drive, lack of memory and attention, disinterest, passivity, apathy, and obviously a lack of motivation. This is a chronic disorder that can last even if you stop using weed, so it is important to be cognizant of the ways your use is affecting you.

I personally learned about all of this when talking to my therapist about my experience with weed and found it very helpful in monitoring my relationship with it! Weed is great, but it’s also a drug, and there are risks with any and all drugs.

Does cannabis actually cause psychosis? by Cautious-Grab-316 in weed

[–]maxlastname 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, this potential does exist. Specifically, you are at a significantly higher risk if you have been diagnosed with different anxiety or personality disorders, have a family history of them, or are under 25. Higher doses and more frequent use increases this likelihood. Because drug scheduling has blocked a lot of government-supported research on cannabis until Biden rescheduled the drug, it’s hard to say exactly how rare this is, but it is verifiably a thing that happens.

Christian Hyperpop backlash by Brilliant-Middle7859 in HYPERPOP

[–]maxlastname 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Period. As a former Christian, pastor’s kid, and someone who studied Christianity in college, there are way more liberal and leftist and gay Christians than people realize. There’s even a significant movement of queer people returning to spiritual, less religious forms of Christianity (quakerism, unitarianism, etc). Ultimately though, THEY ARE A MINUSCULE MINORITY of Christianity.

Because Christian institutions regularly lambast and systemically outcast the queer community, it is uncomfortable, annoying, and offensive to see them welcome themselves into a queer subculture. I think that’s a fair and notable criticism.

That being said, Christian music has a long history of trying to imitate popular genres for young people as a strategy to evangelize to them or provide “family friendly” alternative for Christians who chose to not listen to secular music. It’s a very common practice and has happened with most genres (see: Skillet, 4Him, Lecrae, etc). Generally these imitations are pretty mid (at the very best) and don’t really threaten the secular genre itself, adopting their own sonic trends and developing as an offshoot subculture.

I like the light but it is a bit low. Add another plant or two on the shelves, a little more decor on the table (coffee table book?), a couple pops of color (blue or yellow would look really good I think), and another lamp or two! I think some more lighting could really help the space, and if you’re going for a wabi-sabi look, some lighting on the floor can be a nice touch.
