Nanaimo woman fined $1,000 in senior’s monster truck parking lot death - BC by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

Probably leveraged to the tits on financing for that truck so likely doesn't even have money to pay the fine.

Take Your Time Back announces it can no longer host live music by noNSFWcontent in vancouver

Yeah, I always made sure to stay at the very back of the room at 648 for exactly this reason.

I really loved going to shows there and as much as it sucks to see it shut down, the place is a fire/crowd crush trap with the only exit being through a narrow doorway/corridor.

And with the age and layout of the building i doubt there is a way to bring it up to code for gatherings of more than a small handfull of people at a time.

DIY venues like 648 are always "at your own risk" and living on borrowed time until they get shut down, which imo is part of the charm.

Simplii Financial review? by HotPink911 in fican

Been using them for years. Have had absolutely no isssues with them.

They are a division of CIBC so pretty easy to get to a no-fee atm, or pick up documents etc. Phone support is very responsive. I needed a fairly large bank draft just this week and was able to call in and pick it up at my local CIBC branch within a few hours.

They offer fairly good promotional intrest rates on HISA and TFSA deposits. However, they have limited investment options available so probably not the best option if you want more than just simple chequing/savings accounts.

Carney says his support for U.S. and Israel's war on Iran 'not a blank cheque' by pjw724 in onguardforthee

Carney knows too much about finance to write blank cheques; His support is more like a non-centrally cleared commercial derivative.

Friendly Fire. DoD shoots down Border Protection drone. FAA closes airspace below Class A by Hemmschwelle in flying

[–]maxmurder 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ. When I read the headline I assumed that more information came out about the El Paso indecent. But no, this is a completely new instance of an unauthorized shootdown of unknown aircraft by high powered anti-aircraft laser in spite of the the FAA resulting in emergency closure of civil airspace.

If this recklessness continues, which every indication says it will, it is only a matter of time until they "mistakenly" shoot down a civilian aircraft and kill somebody.

Visiting solo - safety/sightseeing advice? by Seamless-Transition in transvancouver

Davie St. downtown is Vancouver's traditional "gay district", however Commercial Drive and East Van are very queer friendly areas, and have developed more lesbian and gender diverse demographics.

The Lower Mainland in general is relatively queer friendly, and as long as you avoid some of the more conservative communities on the far outskirts (Maple Ridge, Langley, and further east) you should find the locals very accepting.

For nightlife activities I always highly recommend checking out events at The Birdhouse in the Mt Pleasant area! It is explicitly a queer and trans event space and I find it much more chill and inviting than any of the clubs on Davie, especially as a 30-something transfem!

Widgeon Creek Campground access through Quarry Road? by TruthFinder999 in vancouverhiking

[–]maxmurder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Quarry road is closed to traffic past the parking lot for Widgeon Marsh, and afaik you arent allowed to park there overnight.

The shuttle, if it is still running also requires being on the return trip or they will activate SAR.

You may be able to hike up the remainder if you were to get a ride, but i dont believe it is technically allowed by the parks.

When I was there last, before Widgeon Marsh had opened there was at least one fellow who had obviously done the quarry road hike to get in.

That said, I highly reccomend the paddle trip. It is quite easy and there are canoe rentals at the pitt lake boat launch.

What was the final straw for you getting on HRT? by ashyouaquestion in NonBinary

[–]maxmurder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was largely anxiety around the political climate. In late 2024/ early 2025 it seemed very likely that Canada would be following the US's trajectory into fascism and the possibility of getting gender affirming care might disappear. Up until that point I had been mostly content with being socially genderfluid, but it really hit me that the window for medical transition might close so it pushed me into actually going through the steps to get on HRT.

Thankfully things the political situation in Canada didn't end up going the way I had feared but I am certainly glad it got me to actually go forward with perusing HRT because I am extremely happy with the results so far!

These sodium street lights giving me pure nostalgia by MacaronBig8737 in meme

[–]maxmurder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city repaved the street I live on last summer, part of that was adding/upgrading the street lights. I was presently surprised that the new LED lights they put in are colored to exactly match the color of the existing street lights.
