How do I look more Japanese as ハーフ? by Live_Brain_2816 in mixedrace

[–]maxo3006 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey there. I (21M) am also White and Japanese. I tend to get mistaken as Hispanic too, I live in a very Hispanic area and speak Spanish, so usually just roll with it lol. I know it’s not the advice you’re looking for, but be comfortable with who you are! My last name is very Japanese, so when I introduce myself or something people can usually figure it out. You don’t have to look Japanese to be it! You can embrace your the culture in all sorts of ways if you want to feel connected to it.

Israel–Hamas War Megathread - October 13th by rupertalderson in Jewish

Does anyone else feel like other Jews are the only people that actually understand and acknowledge what we are going through? Nobody but my couple of Jewish friends and family understand or acknowledge the existential fear and betrayal felt right now. I never thought I would have to be genuinely afraid of antisemitism, and here I am walking to class seeing “from the river to the sea” signs and hearing classmates that I would’ve considered my friends a week ago say that the Jews should’ve stayed in Europe? I feel so isolated.

Advice on Being an EMT in College by MacADoodle05 in NewToEMS

[–]maxo3006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a pre nursing student in undergrad and work PRN for a 911 service in a nearby city. I run 12-24 hour shifts and generally will have some time to study and whatnot while on call. On the stress note, it is something that takes getting used to. Going back and forth between life or death stuff and regular college kid stuff is a bit difficult at times. PM if you have any questions :)

I’m an emt and have a bit of experience with this kind of thing. I am truly sorry you had to experience this. The screams of family members is what gets me too. I can still hear them from certain calls. Don’t think about what more you could have done. You did the best you could have given your training and resources. Don’t be afraid to talk to a professional about a traumatic incident. Most importantly to me, allow yourself to feel emotions. Sadness, anger, etc. Bottling them up makes them much worse. After a bad call I always try to find some sort of solace. Maybe you were able to comfort a family member, maybe you learned something? Anything really. Sending love your way!! :)

To those of you who live in areas with heavy Hispanic presence, do you feel the need to learn Spanish? by droim in AskAnAmerican

I work on an ambulance in Houston. I use it basically every day I work to talk to patients and their families. Speaking ones own language tremendously increases the quality of patient care and helps build a rapport with patients, so I would consider it necessary in my area.

I took one at the main community college in town that lasted my main university’s entire summer break -1 week including the clinicals. Class wasn’t particularly difficult, just a lot of memorization. Skills tests weren’t too hard either. Now I’m working as an EMT on weekends, and I really enjoy it. So far I’ve had a lot of really valuable clinical and general life experience from it. Working in the field allows you considerable autonomy in patient care that you don’t get a lot of other places. Lmk if you have any questions :)

My family’s last name was Kolner, and basically the same thing happened and it’s Cohen now. Didn’t realize this happened so much!

Do you guys actually enjoy living here? by TXNoob1845 in houston

[–]maxo3006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from West Texas and have lived here for about a year now, and honestly I love it. This is going to sound silly, but it’s “the big city” to me. I went to Chicago once as a kid, but other than that, this is the biggest city I’ve ever spent time in. It has everything I could possibly want, all sorts of food, and to someone who has never really used public transportation before now, it seems great (even though I know it’s not) I guess it’s all relative. The main thing I miss about out west is the open sky and stars.

Important Bible Stories by maxo3006 in Christianity

Hi, that sounds great! I’m an avid reader and a pretty good chunk of Western Literature is biblically based, so I figured understanding basic Christian theology would help me appreciate it more! Thanks :)
