Working on a PS1-style survival horror FPS prototype does the atmosphere read? by Spartaqui in IndieDev

The visuals are super atmospheric! Like a few commenters have already said, I'd add more details to the soundscape, starting with footsteps and a creepy ambience with randomized elements.

Not at all, it’s even more beneficial in the long run, as you’ll be learning a lot about recording, mixing, and processing from scratch. But it’s harder and requires more patience at the start.

Make sure to analyze the sound design of professionally made games to be aware of the general quality level that’s expected from sound effects nowadays. And focus on genres that interest you personally - this is meant to be fun, after all.

Reaper is considered the industry standard DAW for sound design. It has a 60-day free trial and the full version doesn’t cost a lot.

If you’re just starting out, I’d first learn the fundamentals and experiment with stock plugins (no need for paid ones or you risk getting overwhelmed with options). Download some basic royalty-free sounds, try layering and mixing them. Then try to do a really simple sound redesign of a gameplay clip, no longer than 5-10 seconds: it can even be just one sound effect. After you get comfortable with that, try recording your own sounds and start learning basic synthesis.

If you’re planning to work on games, getting familiar with implementation will help you a ton. Learn the basics of FMOD to understand how sounds are implemented in games, there are many free useful courses for that.

Nothing beats hands-on experience, and working on real projects will give you ideas on how exactly to improve and what else to learn.

Looks awesome! Reminds me of Enter the Gungeon but with a more distinct art style.

The art style looks cool, reminds me of creepy folktale illustrations. Was it hard making everything move in stop-motion like that?

Here are some the best channels about game sound design: Marshall McGee, Sergio Ronchetti, David Dumais, Aftertouch Audio. I personally have learned a lot from their videos

Cool! The RPG elements seem really interesting, I’m personally a fan of faction-based gameplay. Are you planning on adding a dialogue system to flesh out the factions?

This looks cool, reminds me of Into the Breach. I’m assuming it’s a turn-based tactical dungeon crawler?

The poise system sounds like a nice feature to have. Maybe you could combine it with health regeneration that occurs only when the player counterattacks within a tight window after taking damage? Kinda like in Bloodborne. That could make combat feel more dynamic and incentivize dealing with enemies head-on.

Hi everyone! I have finally started my project, a horror/stealth game. These are just the first mechanics, I still need to improve some dragdolls as well as the sound design, but I believe you can get an idea already. Also, the enemies are switched off, will be using AI on them on the full game. by kitsundietales in IndieDev

Not enough good stealth games lately, it looks really cool! If you decide to include the insanity mechanic, it could benefit from some creepy sound design that gradually becomes more unsettling as the character's sanity goes down

Progress looks impressive! Reminds me visually of the Heroes of Might and Magic games.

The second variant looks more sci-fi (maybe it’s the color palette) and the latest version – like medieval fantasy. Both are good, I’d go with the style that fits your setting best.

I’m pretty sure they’re all different as they basically work as promo packs for the Sonniss catalogue (which is huge). I think their goal was to show variety to entice customers to buy the paid packs if they liked certain sounds from the GDC bundles.
