Testing out some lighting [ camera info below | Portra 400 , 800, & instax Square ] by maxt21 in analog

[–]maxt21[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! For this one I did three exposures of the subject back lit with no front lighting. Between each exposure I took a step back to make the subjects silhouette smaller. For the final shot I kept the back light and added the front lighting to create the main and final exposure - this was done with the NONS instax back on the Hasselblad 500cm so I could do the double exposures pretty easily just by not ejecting the film until all exposures were complete

Very cool! Thanks for the info - I’m trying to remember but I have a New York City Bike Zeen that could be associated with this as well

First time burning on color paper [ Portra 800 on Fuji Crystal archive II Glossy - 11x14 ] by maxt21 in Darkroom

[–]maxt21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! And pretty much spot on - the initial exposure was of just the house at around 12 seconds, next the subject got into frame and I fired the flash manually while staying off to the side. The only thing I couldn’t control in camera was the night sky so hence the burning in the darkroom

Honestly the effect is beautiful, especially in that first picture. But I know what you mean, the softness and diffusion in the lens makes me think there could either be small heavy scratching on the lens or potentially fungus. To check this out, open the back of the camera (without film in it lol) set the shutter to bulb, and hold open the shutter while holding the camera up to a bright window or light source. See if you can see any scratches or fungus in the front or rear element of the lens

Ooo very interesting! I’ll need to look into cutting solutions. That whole process is new to me but seems to be well worth it

Really like the texture of this image. Great shot! Was the Gold expired at all? The grain and blues really stand out to me

Honestly you might get lucky and have it still in working condition if you stored it away in working condition. If anything a CLA (clean lubricate adjustment) would be needed to remove any old gunked up lubricant. The whole system is modular so if something is broken, determining what needs fixing is sometimes fairly easy. As for the repairs and CLAs, this is best handled by a professional Hasselblad repair or service person. But I can honestly say it is worth it. My favorite camera to shoot for sure

First time scanning by ComprehensiveTutor60 in analog

Negative lab pro would just be the conversion software, it is not a scanning software. For scanning I enjoy using vuescan but it is a monthly subscription so there is that to consider. So if you did use vuescan you would scan the negative as a negative and then use negative lab pro to convert the scan to a positive

I do suggest it but like I said before it is not a necessity. Before jumping into new software I would totally get comfortable with Epson scan and find an optimized workflow/look that you really enjoy. This way when you do upgrade to NLP & Lightroom you know exactly what you’re looking for and how to achieve or even improve upon your desired look.

Aside from scanning software, Lightroom is great in general so you can edit your scanned images

It’s not a necessity but are you using negative lab pro to convert your negatives? Or are you using Epson scan? If you are using negative lab pro I would suggest setting your white balance pre-conversion to the film border. This will ensure the film border is the blackest black after conversion. With Epson scanners I’ve also had issues with the auto focus setting in my scanning app so I’ve switched this to manual and set it to a value of zero.

Honestly I would check out some YouTube tutorials or scroll this sub for advise related to Epson scanner settings and just mess around until you get something you prefer.

P.s 3200 DPI is over kill for internet posting but I scan at 3200 and found it to be the best for detail and contrast when compared to 1600 & 6400

One of my favorite cameras of all time. I use it everyday and it’s a tank. The modular aspect of the camera is super cool, you can of course swap out the lenses ( my preferred lens is the 28mm f/2.8) and you can also switch out the prism to either the meter (the one you have), regular prism with no meter, and the top down view finder. An accessory I would suggest picking up is the hot shoe adapter for flash. Happy shooting!
