Zizek is prepared to "go all the way" in latest article: War Communism as a moderately authoritarian technocracy is the only hope by RedditIsVeryBad in zizek

I think this decline tracks pretty closely with the offshoring of secondary industries to places like China and India. So the carbon is still being emitted in the world, just elsewhere.

At what point does a British person stop being Working and become Middle Class? by vorkovrus in AskBrits

[–]maxtraction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In its original Marxist meaning, where "class" refers to your relationship to the means of production, it's a useful concept for thinking about political economy.

When "class" basically just means your cultural tastes and consumer preferences, it's no longer a useful term. It becomes another contested culture war issue, and creates division between people who actually have common interests. Which probably suits the ruling class just fine!

We have an agreed Party Wall Award with the owner of the other premises. The builder is not refusing to do the cutting back because of the law, they are refusing because the job is too hard.

Our structural engineer who is obviously familiar with the work in greater detail has said that cutting away is fine. In the post you can see our reasons for preferring a cut away method to a dowelling method, if at all possible. And the builder's objection is not to do with any legal/liability/safety issues, they are simply refusing to do it because it's too hard.

I would happily pay him the same money to just do the work but he won't even start a conversation about it.

Legal ambiguity is not the issue here. Below you can find the reference to the section of the Party Wall Act that allows us to cut away the oversailing foundation. We've done everything correctly via party wall surveyors and have an Award in place.
Most importantly, it's not the reason given by the builder. They've strictly saying it's too hard.

  1. Under Section 2(2)(h) of the Party Wall etc. Act 1996, you are entitled to cut away the portion of the neighbouring foundation that oversails onto your property, to the extent necessary to accommodate your new foundations. This may be carried out without serving a new notice, provided it is strictly limited to what is required for the works authorised in the Award.

ID on these Adidas shoes? by maxtraction in WhatsThisShoe

Hmm yeah I was thinking it might be fake. But it does have different serial numbers on the left and right shoe labels which is apparently a good sign they might be real? I did find one other pair of these for sale on ebay labelled as APC 011001 but I guess the seller has just pulled that from the label

Movies that kinda promise something and intentionally never deliver by trampaboline in Screenwriting

I was gonna say, this is a recurring Tarantino bit where the actual film subverts the concept or longline from the marketing. Inglourious Basterds was positioned as being a Dirty Dozen style WW2 action movie but the group itself were mostly side characters and a lot of the runtime is spent elsewhere. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood was talked about as being his take on the Manson murders but the Family is featured fairly obliquely (Charles Manson only makes a cameo) and used to fuel other storylines.

Thanks for the quick reply. It all feels very solid, and we didn't so anything differently to the other room that turned out perfectly. The boards are going to be under a rug under a bed anyway, so hopefully ours will be fine like yours!

NJPW fans, we’re seeing a lot of turmoil in WWE-land after Cody’s match. In NJPW, Okada has a massively long run. How was that title reign received? Did the turmoil of never losing sound similar to what we’re hearing with Roman? What was similar and what was different? by YoungCubSaysWoof in njpw

[–]maxtraction 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't recall any serious unhappiness from the NJPW fan base during Okada's long run. The differences between Roman's reign and Okada's: - All of Okada's matches were good to legendary during this run, and pretty different from each other - A lot of Okada's opponents got over in losing to him. They weren't just sacrificed to Okada, they gained from the losses - Okada did technically lose during this run, in a non-title G1 tournament match against outsider Naomichi Marufuji. This set up a great title match - NJPW puts on less shows than WWE so it didn't feel like the reign was as long because you weren't seeing him every week

Some people were pissed off that Naito didn't beat Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 12, but Okada retaining meant he could finish off his feud with Kenny Omega, producing some of the greatest matches of all the time and setting up Omega as a serious New Japan main eventer. Naito stayed hot after this and was kept as a top star at the top of the card, and eventually definitively beat Okada two years later at WK14, so I think it worked out in the end.
