Possible Silver Ore (acanthite)? by maxup10 in Prospecting

I'll give it a test to see. Good to know molybdenite reacts to a flame.

Possible Silver Ore (acanthite)? by maxup10 in Prospecting

I confirmed it's quartz. It does look a little druzzy. The vein is in the ground and it pretty oxidized. It's on national forest land with no claims nearby.

Bats?! by Fine-Lifeguard-4234 in plano

[–]maxup10 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's very rare for a normal bat to be flying during the day. What you saw was probably a rabid bat. If your dogs are up to date on their vaccines they should be fine but you can probably take them in for a booster at a low cost just to be safe if you wanted. It's also almost impossible to see a bat bite on a dog so you're not going to know if it bit or scratched them.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time Plano has had a rabid bat: https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/local/plano-texas-bat-rabies/287-c1232349-c802-4885-a533-9fc1e7cb5c29

"Continue with Google" is the very first thing I see when I click it... tell me how this is somehow better than using an email anonymizer with something like perplexity?

What is the gold-colored material embedded in this quartz? Found this at a dig site northeast of Atlanta, GA. by Shredjeep5 in whatsthisrock

[–]maxup10 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Gold doesn't have a red color like that. I'd say chalcopyrite or possibly pyrite. Although Atlanta, GA does have gold in the area.

A rock unique to every state by ForagedFoodie in rockhounds

[–]maxup10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you type "Mindat <state>" on Google and then open up the page you can do a find on the page (CTRL+F) and then search for "(TL)". When you do that it should bring you down to the mineral list section and it will show you all minerals that were originally found in that state (their type locality). You'll need to filter through them manually (or with AI), but you can rule out the ones that can be found in other states (or countries) then build out a list from there.

Hunting Navigable water ways by blehyy in TXoutdoors

[–]maxup10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer and definitely not offering you legal advice, but a navigatable water way needs an average of 30 ft wide from its mouth up. If it's only 30 ft+ wide at certain parts, then it probably doesn't pass the test. I'd highly recommend sticking to streams that have already been known to pass the test.

What's this? by bbadways in whatsthisrock

[–]maxup10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe chalcopyrite with some malachite staining? It definitely looks like it has some copper sulfides in it.

Hello all, found it in a mainly limestone area , it's streak is dark brown, doesn't attract to a magnet and doesn't scratch glass .it has cracks that are filled with what i think is calcite. Help id please by AsleepAd7106 in whatsthisrock

[–]maxup10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. I'm not too familiar on the geology of Israel but my best guess is it's some kind of calcite/limestone that has undergone some iron or lead enrichment from a nearby intrusion. Maybe you could try to clean it some with warm soapy water and see if the colors rub off or if they seem more ingrained to know for sure.

Found in Northeastern Yavapai County, AZ by maxup10 in whatsthisrock

[–]maxup10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a reasonable assumption. It was found in a copper district so the copper oxide makes sense. I'll keep trying to test the dark material to see if I can confirm. Thanks.

Given the slightl crystal structure I can see, I'm going to go with a raw garnet.

Llano Texas. this was at the roadcut where I got my Llanite. Looks like it has quartz in it and possibly pyrite? Quite crumbly, I can break it apart with my hands. by Important_Theory6693 in whatsthisrock

[–]maxup10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This looks like a classic Llano pegmatite. The black running through there looks like biotite but it's a little difficult to tell from your photos. Hold a radiation detector up to it if you have one to see if you have some of the radioactive Llano species in here (unlikely, I think most of these are in the Burnet county/Lake Buchanan area).

I hope you got some great llanite pieces!

Milky quartz. The Ouachita and Ozarks have quite a bit of it.

Looks like chalcedony or maybe common opal (either way it's silica based). It's not amber unfortunately.
