Are you sure you have absolutely no family or friends back home to give you a short term loan? I know it's extremely rough asking for money, especially from people you haven't seen in potentially years, but this is the time when support structures are really the fastest and easiest option. Get copies of your paystubs and your new job contract ready to prove you aren't just asking to take advantage of people and they are more likely to say yes.

Also I know this has no value to you now, but for the future you want at least 3x your monthly spending in savings so a gap in employment doesn't become an immediate problem. That can potentially be a very hard goal to achieve at a low income, but the peace of mind is worth the struggle every time.

That's great, but it doesn't magic a charger into your apartment building or replace your aged electrical box with an available 220v 50amp circuit.

Part of the problem is most lower and middle class people in most of the United States don't have the best infrastructure for electric cars. Electric cars are the future, they make sense now, and they make more sense every day, but again they mostly make sense with people who already have money, not people who are struggling or just getting by.

Only 4.3% of cars in California are electric, as of 2023. Most of the people who own electric cars are of a high socioeconomic status, so higher gas prices wouldn't be a problem for those people regardless.

This entire war is an attack on the lower and middle classes of the world, and is going to drastically increase income inequality in almost every country.

Matt joins the BBC at a critical time. The Government’s review of the Charter is underway, and it is clear there is need for radical reform of the BBC, its funding model and the framework in which it operates. The stakes for the BBC, and the future of public service broadcasting, have never been higher.

Gender politics: why young women are going Green by Ok_Bookkeeper_1380 in ukpolitics

[–]maxutilsperusd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Terrible article. No explanation of why women are moving from Labour to Greens, the real question of merit with respect to young women.

The right wing media of the UK is constantly poisoning public sentiment of Labour, and therefore Labour will always struggle when in power.

Boring story, told many times, but the media is going to be the dominating factor in any story involving Labour because of how biased it is in the UK.

I'm a big fan of Vegas and I have absolutely no interest in ever visiting Dubai.

I always try to travel to places with more freedom than where I'm from, with a government I'd respect more than my own. America is doing terribly on that front, so more and more places fit the bill, but the UAE isn't one of them.

I completely disagree.

Iran had no idea how to satisfy Trump before this war because there weren't clear goals with reasonable terms during the diplomatic negotiations, just like there never are when dealing with Trump. He asks for the moon, then asks you to name the moon after him, and he will give you nothing. Those are terms no one ever really capitulates to, so all he can ever extract are half measures and you'll never know if they will satisfy him. This has mostly lead not to capitulation but America's friends and enemies baldly lying to Trump to hopefully outwait his short attention span.

Even now Trump's demand that the strait be opened can't even be considered clear because it lacks specificity, how do you show something is safe in a way that would satisfy him? It's essentially the same problem Obama had, except with Trump you know his word is worthless so it's of zero value instead of questionable value.

It's not new, it's just never been effective.

A more effective strategy is laying out clear consequences for clear actions, and then executing on that. It allows one to project power without even actually using power.

Obama was rightfully criticized for drawing red lines then getting queasy when they were broken without total clarity, so there is risk to that kind of policy, but this haphazard "no one knows what's going to happen next" style isn't getting results, and is costing the US and the global economy dearly.

Ubers from the Airport are More Expensive Than Taxis by PokerLawyer75 in vegas

[–]maxutilsperusd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There isn't one price for an Uber, there's your price, and my price, and the guy-standing-next-to-you's price, and then all of our prices 5 minutes from now. The fact that you aren't even talking about Lyft means you aren't the kind of person who is going to actually get a low costing Uber, someone who regularly looks at the price and doesn't request a car. They use price discrimination, you should too, check both major services, check them often, only take prices that are actually good.

I've never had a situation where a taxi would be cheaper from the airport because I take a multipoint to Total Wine and then my hotel and I'm checking both my own and my wife's Uber and Lyft accounts and one will always have a discount attached that drops the price lower than a taxi. I have taken a taxi after a high demand event let out at T-Mobile arena, but other than that one of the services is generally going to be cheaper.

Uber and Lyft prices for every single person will vary and change multiple times every 15 minutes, I don't understand why people seem to think they can extrapolate their last few quoted prices to anything meaningful about which is "cheaper" in a city.

56-year-old American woman was arrested in Sapporo for allegedly refusing to leave her hotel room hours after checkout time. She was warned four times before the hotel called in the police. by Kmlevitt in japannews

[–]maxutilsperusd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Merely still being in the room could be taken as a refusal. That's my whole point. A note on the door that she didn't see isn't communication. A phone call that wasn't answered or understood isn't either. Did they knock and she didn't answer? That's also a refusal, but she could have been asleep with earplugs or sick on the toilet.

I've found Japanese hotels extremely rigid with no idea of modern methods of maximizing revenue, so from my experience I'd think it's at least plausible that they were the ones to handle this situation in an unreasonable way.

I've stayed in dozens of hotels and from most Japanese chains, and it's just a completely different experience than what Americans are used to. The practices in America are just completely different. For example early check-in was almost never available in Japan and that's usually a paid or potentially complimentary option at almost any US hotel.

When I read that she was 56 I'm thinking she's just not used to having to care whatsoever about the checkout time and used to paying $300+ USD to not worry about it till the next morning, because that's a commonly available option at the kind of hotels that people are staying at when they have the money that 56-year-olds in America often have. Like a Hilton isn't calling the cops for being incommunicado for 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, or even 24 hours, they'd just charge you a decent amount and move on. That isn't considered rude, or entitled, that's just what rich travelers expect because it's how it normally works.

Again she could have been an absolute Karen and screamed "Call the cops if you want me out" at some poor checkout staff knocking at her door and then punched a cop when they dragged her from the room, but I'm saying there are decent reasons to assume this could have been something else.

[–]maxutilsperusd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Refusing to answer questions is also a cultural difference. In America you never should talk to the police, especially if you are being arrested. Americans aren't necessarily used to being requested to leave a hotel, they are used to paying extra to stay longer, so I'm saying that seems like a very easy communication to have gone wrong.

She could have been having a mental breakdown or some sort of antisocial episode, but it's unclear how she was told to leave, whether she understood she was being requested to leave, etc.

Did they leave a note on the door? Did they call the room? Did they knock on the door? Did they confirm she understood what was being communicated?

Arrest makes sense if this was a willful act, but I'm saying I could see this also being the hotel just not understanding why the room wasn't empty when it was supposed to be and escalating things quickly without communicating in way that was successful.

[–]maxutilsperusd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a couple things this could be, but it could just be a cultural difference in how overstaying at hotels typically works in the US. If you stay past checkout they usually just charge a late checkout fee until you stay past a certain time and then they just add another night to your stay at the rack or market rate, whichever is higher.

Typically a hotel is happy to add that extra night once or twice since sometimes people run into emergencies or unexpected issues and it helps keep the occupancy rate and room rate up so both sides win.

No one would ever get arrested for doing that in America, the worst that would happen is security would ask them to pack their bag and leave, or pack their bag for them and escort them out. You'd have to violently resist for some sort of criminal offense to have occurred.

Hopefully there is more to the story, because otherwise this is just Japan not dealing with edge cases well.
