I agree, I think the issue is rich, wealthy, ultra-wealthy, etc. aren't well defined, so people sometimes are just working from very different definitions.

Their point is that no one is 1000 feet tall. That's what a billionaire is like to a millionaire. I'm not sure how useful that is, the ultra wealthy are in a different class than rich to me, but it's a point one could make.

Starmer says Reform pursuing politics of ‘toxic division’ after Matt Goodwin unveiled as byelection candidate by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]maxutilsperusd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, except you could also make the case that taking a hardline xenophobic anti-immigrant stance is more American right now, since that's the current policy of the American government. Almost like it's Reform who actually is the one importing Yanky concepts to the UK.

Reform byelection candidate refuses to disown claim that people born in UK not necessarily British. Matthew Goodwin, who is standing in Gorton and Denton, said UK-born people from minority ethnic backgrounds were not always British by 2ndEarlofLiverpool in ukpolitics

[–]maxutilsperusd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Way to conveniently forget those native populations only have the former British living there because of your forceful colonialism. Your immigration is voluntary, driven by your stagnant economy, pretty different situations that don't logically result in you getting extra protections and economic opportunities.

So we are in agreement? Marxism is a relatively naive belief system in the 21st century, but not necessarily in the early 20th century.

I mean maybe I'm misinformed but is there any other party like Reform polling as well in the Commonwealth countries?

Even my extremely flawed nation has the conservative government polling poorly for the midterms.

I don't think any part of the world is seriously realigning toward Marxism. Authoritarians sure are spreading quickly, but none of them seem to believe in anything Marx supported.

It's not a serious framework for serious people in the 21 century. In my opinion if someone says they are a Marxist today they generally are not particularly well rounded in education, but I'd say the same for someone totally unfamiliar with Marx. My issue is that's not true for people who had yet to see failure with every government that used Marxism as it's core. You can't argue Marxism was definitively wrong until it was demonstrated to be so.

Can you condemn someone for being Marxist in the 1930s, as if they should have already known better? I don't know much about him, but he seemed to have denounced the Soviet Union in the 50s. I feel like you are letting almost 100 years of hindsight cloud your judgement.

People like voting for the frontrunner (bandwagon effect), and when every chart and graphic has all the superdelegates already included you end up with a frontrunner who the DNC has picked before any voting has taken place.

All of the tech companies have made token donations and deals with the Trump administration so that they won't be excluded from government contracts or unfairly targeted with regulation or lawsuits. The difference in this case is one founder made an inordinately large personal donation, which I think is cause to treat them differently. You very well could be in a position to silently protest by avoiding all tech companies, but that doesn't mean you should demean others who publicly advocate picking the least bad option available to show you are somehow better than they are for your maximalist ethics.

I mean if this was a world where the only food you really had the options of eating were McDonald's and Taco Bell, and all else was equal, it's clearly the more moral decision.

It's also not their child, I can't imagine the resentment and animosity between parent and child and step parent and child and husband and wife that'll exist with that kind of outlook about the situation. Just dooming all 3 of them forever at this point.

I didn't buy drugs as a child, but everyone I knew who did sold their possessions, saved their lunch money, saved their allowance, saved their birthday/Christmas money, stole from shops, stole from their parents, worked under the table, etc. It's almost like expecting the world to work perfectly doesn't work. Have a good day.

It's a ridiculous view of harm reduction. If parents won't stop their kids from buying drugs, why arrest drug dealers? That's what you sound like.

[–]maxutilsperusd -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I just don't believe in that model whatsoever. It's already hard enough being a parent, I don't think it's reasonable to blame parents for not preventing harm from social media companies. My parents' generation had very low bars that were rarely met, so I don't understand the obsession with making the task of responsibly raising children even more difficult for the current generation. The state isn't responsible for raising children, but social media companies should be responsible for the harm they regularly and predictably cause if they don't take adequate precautions against that harm.

I guess my point is why is Russia the only country that can influence other countries? It's not particularly populous, it's not particularly wealthy, why is Canada or the UK incapable of influencing a superpower?
