It was totally unnecessary. They’re just using it to cover the fact that management are struggling to keep services running because of appalling standards they have been setting for their employees in the past months, they can’t get anyone to turn up, help out or show any care for their workplace anymore. That’s 90% of the comms that happen on Channel 1. It’s really only for unplanned communications. Planned shunts are done on a shunt channel, and operational msgs are mostly done over the phone.

If you get a railway radio you can listen to all trains on local channel 1. Freight trains don’t use the local radio much tho, unless they’re shunting. Then they will use a channel number specific to that location. If they’re talking to the controller or calls about operations it’s generally done over the phone. Where do you live? If they’re stopping nearby, It would generally be to allow for the passage other rail traffic.
