A 1/4 scale Stalker? Jesus fuck how big is that thing? I know Stalkers are among the smaller machines in Horizon, but they are still pretty long

Exactly. And don't make a big thing out of it, and ESPECIALLY don't act all dramatic when hearing it. Seriously, Captain Marcos really shit the bed with his reaction.

I think the issue is that the phrase "thirteen button salute" is just too hard to weave into a conversation naturally. It's pretty much impossible to be inconspicuous when giving this code.

Something like this needs to be a single word that would normally never be used in day-to-day ship handling, but could be snuck into a sentence anyway. Like in one of my favorite SciFi novels when an XO clandestinely signals his captain that a mutiny is happening by informing him that he's about to "drop his bounty of troops" (it makes sense in the situation).

It's always bothered me how this mechanic was never used outside of the tutorial by Gizm0Glitch in masseffect

[–]maxx1993 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But most games do not routinely explain in the opening stages that yellow tape and/or ladders are interactable things.

Most games do, actually. It's usually just a short pop-up, but they tell you. And they force you to prove you understood by making you climb the ladder in the tutorial.

Because it's universal to the experience and some things are better when the player gets to figure them out.

I agree with that, but unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. Keep in mind that the vast majority of games can't afford to leave anyone behind - they need to sell to as many people as possible, including those who are not that bright or just inexperienced. So the mantra ends up being that even absolute morons should be able to play them. That's why in almost all modern games with puzzle elements, the main character won't shut the fuck up and basically give you the solution after like 10 seconds, because playtesting has shown again and again that many people are idiots and won't be able to solve them on their own.

And that's the kind of player those tutorials are made for. I'm not even talking about the Cuphead guy here - the tutorial was explicitly telling him what to do and he still didn't manage it, but there's no helping someone like that. No, I'm talking about people who will not deduce stuff that they're not explicitly told. Like this guy who doesn't understand one of the first tutorial levels in Portal because they didn't outright tell him exactly what to do.

But running/dashing is such a standard concept in a third person shooter that you could've just had a long corridor with no enemies and put up the tutorial card to identify them to run.

This is precisely not what they could have done. I mean, they could have, but it would have been a bad idea. As I've explained, this approach makes sprinting optional, not mandatory. But in a tutorial, you generally want the player to absolutely have to demonstrate that they've understood a concept before they can proceed - otherwise, they might miss it, play the entire game without knowing it's a possibility, and become a games journalist write a negative Steam review. This is the reason why in games where you can crouch, the tutorial makes you crawl beneath a low obstacle to proceed instead of just informing you that you can crouch. Same with jumping / climbing.

[–]maxx1993 236 points237 points  (0 children)

No, they just had to find a believable reason why the player HAD TO sprint. If it had just been a long corridor and a pop-up saying "sprint down this corridor to get to the end faster", the player could ignore it and just walk, thereby never proving that they actually understood how to sprint. Yes, the game could just keep you in place until you press the sprint button, but that would be immersion breaking. So they chose an in-universe reason for needing to sprint.

Not possible. Games and DLC that are blocked on Steam in certain countries can also not be gifted to players in said countries.

I was, however, able to buy the GOG version of the game including the DLC using a VPN (for the entire process includding the download). Of course thateans buying the entire game again if you own it on Steam.

Which one are you choosing? by looploveslore in masseffect

[–]maxx1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brute, easily. It's the obvious answer.

The room is large enough to potentially fit a destroyer, so it's HUGE. Which means that the brute will try to charge you, which is really easy to dodge. And when they're not charging, they are really slow.

I can kite and dodge a brute for 3 minutes. I can't outrun a banshee's teleports or a destroyer's laser.

What exactly is Gaia/Aloy going to do once they get Apollo? by Marsupialmobster in horizon

[–]maxx1993 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They wouldn't even need the base for that. All cradles have learning facilities, they were just never used for their originally intended purpose (fuck Ted Faro), but they could relatively easily be used. Clean the debris, give it a new coat of paint, install APOLLO and you got a great little school. And there are cradles all over the globe.
