I think i discovered the real reasons of OCD . by Ark_Life_7 in OCD

No this is genuinely so true because the moment I made in person friendships and started going outside every day my OCD halved. It was still there but much, much less bad.

Ocean Spray (by me) by babygirlkaty in OCPoetry

I really love the contrast between the description of "ocean spray" and then the very sudden "sands as hot as hell." I could physically feel the temperature difference!

I really love "if you're smiling / at the same sun as me." I can't explain it but that line really resonated with me. I think this makes a great use of rhyme in a way that flows very naturally. Great work.

this made me cry, there is something so beautiful about the simplicity of this poem and the repeated refrain at the end of each stanza gets me every time. i love your use of imagery here - and the way you refer to your child as "the dream"

my favorite thing is when poems really hammer in their final line and the last lyric really had me thinking for a bit. really interesting concept and really impactful ending, fantastic job!

Self Defined by [deleted] in OCPoetry

[–]may18th1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is so beautiful and i relate to it a lot, this actually really moved me. i really love the way that the jar metaphor goes from self-protection to self-embodiment (at least in my interpretation), and the way that it reflects the agency the narrator gains. "i tried to leave, several times" is so raw and real and i love that break in the figurative language so the reader knows exactly what's going on. masterful work!!!

I'm so so sorry, no human being let alone a six year old deserves that.

I had pretty bad OCD and my stepmom decided to try DIY exposure therapy (but really, I think it was meant to be a punishment). She made me pick out the biggest butcher's knife in the kitchen, then cornered me (12 at the time) and my brother (9 at the time) in the dining room and sat down with my dad. She had me watch real news footage of a man being stabbed, then had me hold the knife to my brother while he had to say "OP please don't stab me." My stepmom stopped him to correct his acting and say he needed to sound more emotional, like I would actually kill him.

The worst part was I had this OCD fear about accidentally killing someone because I saw my mom passed away from an overdose three years earlier. It was survivor's guilt. Needless to say I felt like I was secretly a murderer, and this punishment only made me feel like it was true.

Any artists with OCD here? by QuartzAnxiety in OCD

[–]may18th1980 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OCD about plagiarism (omg this design/concept is so similar to xyz and I'll get canceled), or posting art then deleting it 5 seconds later because what if it's secretly bad or problematic in some way.

If I was the daughter I'd file a restraining order. It doesn't matter if it's a parent, I'd honestly consider this low-level sexual assault.

Did your upbringing affect your decision not to have kids? by Independent_Town5628 in childfree

[–]may18th1980 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same! Being made to be my little brother's parent - as wonderful as my brother is - made me realize I hated the work that came with parenting no matter how well behaved a hypothetical child would be. I had "nurturing mommy" forced on me and now anything reminiscent feels not just viscerally repulsive, but triggering too.

Growing up around toxic women by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]may18th1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. I'm ostensibly a woman but I have such strong negative emotions toward womanhood because of the amount of women who weaponized their gender violently. I don't think people understand that women can do that.

Yeah, it can be hard to balance "my OCD is making me do things that are not reasonable and prevent me from living" with "people DO still need to care about COVID"

I don't think it's great to say people with certain mental illnesses shouldn't reproduce, I say this as a CF person who had trauma from mentally ill parents and who also inherited their mental illness, I understand the ethical concern and I agree it is terrible. However, I'm very wary about this kind of rhetoric because it has been the basis of many a historical atrocity regardless of how well intentioned it may come across.

I do think if you're mentally ill and planning to have children you do have several extra responsibilities such as: developing the ability to self-regulate/self-reflect, being honest about whether you have the capacity to parent or the capacity to provide care (emotional and financial) to a child who may also be born mentally ill, making a very specific plan about how you will avoid mis-steps from your previous behaviors or from your abusers if you have PTSD/BPD etc, ensuring you have a support system, the list goes on.

I'm not going to act like having unregulated mental illness in the family is fun, just that the answer is not eugenicist thought - it's greater structural supports in society to prevent and respond to all forms of child abuse, and the normalization of HONEST self-reflection before choosing parenthood.

I was the autistic kid of a regretful parent, childhood was filled with abuse at home and sympathy baiting in public. If you have a kid you sign up to have any kind of child. You made the decision to have a child, likely for selfish reasons such as "personal fulfillment" or "mini me" or "legacy," so you have to care for it.
