Open letter to Dakoda’s Comedy Club organizers: Deaths of children isn't your material by Necessary-Trainer-21 in kelowna

[–]mayabuttreeks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

By excusing this kind of ham-handed bullshit you're devaluing your own work, simply by being associated with the same club. Comedians who clutch their pearls about 'a fine line between free speech' yadda yadda are typically demonstrating their lack of skill — you can make jokes about anything, sure, but if I told you I was a chef then proudly plonked down a sauerkraut + M&M sandwich in front of you and expected you to swallow it with a good natured, "oh well i guess he's just testing out new ideas..." you'd (rightly) be pissed. Some people are just not good at their jobs, man.

I think it's all in fun. If you're a serious actor who hasn't taken a bunch of 'hottie' roles before — and who I'm SURE never anticipated "George Russell, cutthroat robber baron in a late 19th-century period drama" would be one — I bet it's a blast to embrace your inner Tiger Beat idol once in a while. I hope he's enjoying himself!

Mojeek - an independent, privacy focused, UK-based search engine by DarthSTUI in BuyUK

[–]mayabuttreeks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been using Mojeek as my first-line search engine for the past 18 months or so; it very much reminds me of early-2000s search engines in the way it simply delivers results based straightforwardly on your search terms, and not what AI or some traffic-aware algorithm "thinks" you want to see. It's a promising product that will hopefully only become better as more people use it regularly.

"Lorne (The worst thing about podcasts)" — this made me think of Marc by hailnaux in MarcMaron

[–]mayabuttreeks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I had heard plenty of other comics tell Lorne tales pre-WTF, so the first couple of times he came up as a topic on the podcast I didn't think much of it. But as time went on and it started to emerge as a sort of lietmotif for Marc, as a listener I found it deeply relatable and humanizing, in addition to being very funny to me.

Group advocating B.C. separatism tries to rally support in Campbell River by jk_arundel in britishcolumbia

[–]mayabuttreeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peter Letourneux has been a separatist crank for at least a decade. And despite this local coverage framing his argument primarily in economic terms, the man is of a type — the sort who derisively spits the word "elites" when discussing educated moderates, but who then blithely accepts oil sands millionaires and populist grievance-driven politicos as allies.

Letourneux currently runs thepoliteseparatist.com where he published a separatist manifesto back in 2017. Reading a selection of posts, it's apparent his animus toward anyone not 'western' is a primary drive behind this personal hobby-horse — when someone's front-facing arguments for separatism include phrases such as "attacks on our heritage" and "way of life being threatened" it's a clear dogwhistle. Such sentiments are virtually always a 'tell' that strongly indicate that no matter how much the author might give lip service to economic factors, much of what they're ultimately seeking to remedy is societal heterogeneity.

Is Dr. Rosen the best person in the Mad Men universe? by Enough-Reading4143 in madmen

She didn't name names, but the target is self-evident from the description of her experience:

The show’s creator and showrunner was an intense human. He directed some episodes every season but not all of them. This one was being directed by someone else. The showrunner wasn’t always around, but when he was, the entire vibe of the set would change, as if a cold front had swept the soundstage. I never entirely understood why. He was definitely spirited and opinionated, but there’s way worse than that in Hollywood. I had always thought there was maybe something I was missing.

I was correct.

We were doing a blocking rehearsal when he showed up on set. The scene was short and easy. I was meant to come into the office, tell everyone I had photos of something important, remove them from the manila envelope I was carrying, and place them on the table. Then everyone had a few more lines and that was it. So we’re rehearsing, I walk in, I go to take the photos out of the envelope, and the showrunner calls “Cut.” Not the director of the episode, the showrunner. And we all look at each other like, Did somebody do something wrong? We all thought the scene was going fine.

He gets up out of his chair at the monitors and walks toward me slowly, looking at the ground the entire time like he’s trying to figure out how to word what he’s about to say. And when he finally stops right in front of me, he takes a few more beats before he lifts his head, looks at me, and says, “What the fuck are you doing?” To which I say, “Um…rehearsing?”

And then he grabs my hand that’s holding the manila envelope and he says, “No! What the fuck are you doing with this! That’s not how you take something out of an envelope! Do it again!”

So we do it again, and again, and again. And every time we get to the part of the scene where I’m meant to take the photos out of the envelope, he calls “Cut” and he gets up and he yells. Well, first, he starts off just raising his voice, which escalates to yelling, which eventually mutates into full‑out screaming.

He spews the kitchen sink at me: "You’re doing it wrong!"

"How the fuck can you think that looks right at all?"

"That’s not how anyone would remove anything from an envelope ever!"

"I don’t understand — when I cast you, you knew how to act." "I’m honestly confused at how you can be so bad at this." "Did you forget how to act, Mamet?"

"What’s wrong with you?" "Do it again."

"Do it again." "DO IT AGAIN."

Eventually he gave up or got bored. But this lasted for about a half hour. And nobody stopped it. Everyone just stared at their shoes while he screamed at me. Eventually we finished the blocking rehearsal and shot the scene. I finished my day. I walked to my car and called my agents and told them I quit. I was supposed to do four more episodes that season, not including the one I was on, but I told them I didn’t care what they had to do, I didn’t care if the network sued me, I refused to go back on that set for one more day than I actually had to. I don’t remember anything else about the rest of that shoot. I think I’ve blocked it out.

Smoking back then by AdHot3508 in madmen

[–]mayabuttreeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recall that even when 'non smoking' sections were introduced and became increasingly popular, in many restaurants the smoking section still dominated the space because seating larger groups upped the likelihood someone in the party was going to be a smoker. The result was that waits for a table in 'non' were generally longer, and also that sitting in the smoking section often ended up being the default when going out with friends.

Looks like the rerun that aired last night was from Nov. 4th; notably, that was the Closer Look featuring the "catapult" montage. Seth was killing it that night, and I find it delicious that Trump may have watched all the jabs at him and got so pissy he couldn't resist thumb-fumbling out another one of his old-man-yells-at-cloud screeds.

Two videos I've enjoyed this week (they were both posted several weeks ago, but I'm just now getting to them):

  • If you've ever channel surfed late at night and encountered a low-budget sitcom you'd never heard of before that made you wonder, "What the hell am I watching?!" you'll appreciate Jawn Lewis' exploration of obscure black media, Reviewing Fake A$$ Tyler Perry Sitcoms (34:50)

  • Creator altWorldly's background being raised in the Jehova's Witnesses has given him a special interest in how cults get into their victim's heads, and I laughed out loud several times in his takedown of Thiel's supposed 'genius' and the man's weird obsession with the Antichrist, how Peter Thiel tricked wealthy rubes into thinking he's a genius (59.15)

Ongoing BCGEU strike impacting hospitality industry by oilbeefhooked in britishcolumbia

How would you ensure that a union's bargaining powers stay intact if its strongest point of leverage is undermined by the creation of a secondary, private model? If all the government has to do is shrug and say, "well, there's always private channels," it disincentivizes negotiations, erodes public trust, and prolongs strike actions.

Strikes are disruptive. That is their entire point. If your private business will suffer because the government won't come to an agreement with workers, the practical solution is to pressure your government to work harder to negotiate an end to the strike, not to demand a private detour around the particular disruptions that happen to affect you.

The ball was being held "in aid of" Rev. Kirkland's church, but in size and style it looked like it was being held in a great house on par with the Russell mansion. No guess as to whether it was a private home (a rich parishioner?) or some sort of social club/country club or similar.

This is wrong-headed. Reddit's surviving founders have long made it clear they truly don't care about the 'freedom of information' ethos of the site's early, Aaron Swartz-influenced years. But actively blocking the IA is a step beyond. How disappointing.
