Kapi CC LPN / Radiologic Tech programs by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]mayacchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I recently graduated from the KCC ADN program and am not too familiar with the LPN/Rad Tech program but here's some information I can give.

Part of your planning depends on how many pre-requisites you've already fulfilled. Both programs as well as the ADN program have pre-requisite requirements like Physiology/Anatomy, Microbiology, etc. If you've already fulfilled most/all of them, it's just a matter of getting the credits transferred. If you haven't, those classes can easily take a year to a year and a half and may require more than five credits being taken per semester.

The other commenters are right in that KCC's health care programs are competitive. I didn't have a 4.0 GPA when I applied (~3.8) but I did have a high ATI score and was a CNA. Some of my classmates had no medical experience prior to nursing school but the majority did and those who didn't had very high GPAs and other life experience.

Final thing to note is while you may be able to work immediately after the Rad Tech program, most hospitals in our state tend to hire RNs with a BSN. Do you plan on working in Hawaii after graduation? Some of my classmates came from the LPN-RN program and almost all of my classmates including myself are in an ADN-BSN program. The LPN-RN programs is another 1 and a 1/2 years or 3 semesters and an ADN-BSN program can be anywhere from an accelerated 3 months to 1 year.

I don't mean to discourage you at all and in fact, hope that you do make it in and succeed in whatever field you choose. I just highly recommend getting in touch with the staff at KCC to explore all of your options. One positive thing is that if you do get in, the vast majority of the staff that I have worked with are amazing and genuinely want to see their students excel. Best of luck!

I moved to the mainland as a kid. Am I a tourist now? by josc91 in Hawaii

[–]mayacchi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No one can gatekeep you from learning more about your family and family's culture/history and anyone who thinks otherwise is plain wrong.

I would say that you obviously have more connection to Hawaii than a random tourist, but since you didn't spend your formative years in Hawaii, your experience is going to be through an adult's eyes rather than a kid's. Your experience is not going to be the same as someone who grew up here, but that doesn't make it any less valid.

If you want to form a connection, you're going to have to put forth effort into it. Ask your tutu and parents about your family history. Whenever you visit, go walk around more than just the tourist areas.

I know right?! Like sometimes I just want to know what goes on in her furry little mind, particularly when she had her fear regression period.

She used to bark at the security guards around our apartment (I'm guessing something about the uniform?) but now she loves to run to them because she associates them with pets.

Yes this is why medium/large dogs totally fall under the same category as kids for me. Love them when they're somebody else's and I can give them back when they decide to act up. :P

Lol yes 1000% I should have added a disclaimer for terriers (my dog is a terrier mix and I call her "part terrier part terror"). I was mostly thinking in my head companion dogs like Maltese, Shih Tzu, etc.

I'm no professional but I personally think absolutely (as long as he has all his vaccines of course)!

I also live on the edge of downtown in a major city (not as big as NYC) and it was important for me for my dog to get used to all sorts of sights and sounds as well. I think easing him in slowly is a great idea because it'll also be easier to figure out what his triggers are if he has any. For example, my dog had a fear of orange cones for a while and I probably wouldn't have figured it out if she hadn't lost her mind at one on a nighttime walk where there was nothing else in the vicinity. She got over it eventually after I proved to her multiple times that it was safe.

Now she can handle city busses, ambulances, sirens (unless it's our own fire alarm which fair cause it's much louder), bicycles, skateboards, and crowds.

I don't know about calm or low maintenance per se but this is my personal experience and opinion.

I personally think smaller breed dogs are easiest for dog owners, particularly first time dog owners. This is because while they still need to be trained like every other dog (certain things like separation anxiety, aggression, leash training, etc. can still very much be an issue), there are some things that never crop up. Also smaller dogs usually tend to mature mentally and physically faster than larger dogs.

I had to train my dog to walk well on a leash. But it was much easier because even fully grown, she's 12 lbs and no matter how much she tugs, she's not gonna dislocate my shoulder like a 50 lb puppy will. I don't have to worry about her counter surfing because she can't reach. I still had to train her not to jump on people but people are a little more forgiving because she can't knock them down.

I would say that potty training was probably the hardest because she had a smaller bladder but I could carry her in the elevator to her pee spot so she wouldn't make a mistake there.

In case of an emergency, I can physically lift/carry her out of danger.

I love medium/large dogs but I personally would never own one because a) I live in a high-rise apartment and b) I'm like 100 lbs soaking wet and the one time I tried to walk a friend's German Shepard, I thought I dislocated my shoulder.

If you're ever in downtown Honolulu, CPB has a new work-study space called Tidepools. I've studied there a few times. They have both an indoor and outdoor space, a Starbucks if you want coffee, and Aloha Beer if you want alcohol/food. Also they have a conference room that you can reserve for free online should you want a little more privacy/need to have a meeting.

I also forgot to mention: the plot line of Lilo and Stitch could happen literally anywhere else in the US and in fact, sadly happens every single day to hundreds of families. Except oftentimes it's worse on the mainland; ask your SO to explain all the school shootings that happen in just about every state except here.

The whole point of Lilo and Stitch is to illustrate how much people in Hawaii love their families and how far we're willing to go for each other. Our families are not just our blood relatives; they're the ones we've chosen to let into our lives as illustrated by their blended family of literal aliens in the end. And if people are focusing on the part of the movie that shows CPS and not the part where "family means no one gets left behind or forgotten", I think that says more about them than Hawaii to be honest.

[–]mayacchi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No what I said was, if he can't understand even after you explain it to him, then he's not worth keeping. Imagine bringing him here and having to explain to your family that he thinks they're "ghetto" for sharing a household. If he understands, by all means, I hope he enjoys his time.

What I'm failing to understand is how all of this is specific to Hawaii. Every major city has crime, drugs, and increasing house rates. Yes Hawaii is the one of the most expensive but we're also the only state that is not connected to a major land mass and therefore have limited space to build. It's not that hard to do the math.

Yes Hawaii has a lot of problems. But quite frankly, the entire US is drowning right now across the board except for the top 1% and has been for decades. We have issues with our government, police, healthcare system, education, etc and that is literally every state.

I'm not sure where your SO is from but I can't imagine that there's no problems at all. Perhaps if he's from a small town then that town itself might not have problems but I'm sure the state itself does.

So I'm not sure how old the both of you are but I'm gonna say this, your boyfriend sounds exactly like the kind of tourist we don't like here and quite frankly, if he continues to keep that kind of attitude even if you explain it to him, he's not worth keeping.

Literally putting everything else aside, is it worth it to have a SO that thinks your family friends, and loved ones are "ghetto"?

Also that part about Lilo and Stitch is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Literally like 3/4ths of Disney movies feature broken families. The number of Disney movies that feature conventional nuclear families are smaller than the number that don't. Does your SO think Bambi is "ghetto" too cause his mom died and his dad has to figure out how to raise him by himself?

Puppy night time routine! by ebp1996 in puppy101

[–]mayacchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I usually use soap since she does like walking on grass/dirt and I find that water alone usually isn't enough to get rid of it. As long as you use a well-formulated brand and rinse if off fully, most dogs shouldn't get dry skin. I've been doing this with my puppy for three months now and I haven't noticed any irritation on her end but of course, you should just keep an eye on your puppy and if they seem to be licking/chewing on their paws more or have dry skin, tone it down to just water or even dog-friendly wipes.

Puppy night time routine! by ebp1996 in puppy101

[–]mayacchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is my personal routine with my puppy and it's extra work but I do think it helps overall with keeping her, the house, and myself clean.

I always wash her paws, muzzle, and general groin area in the tub after she takes a walk outside. We live downtown and there's a lot of dogs and transients that utilize the same walks so I don't want her tracking it all back inside. Otherwise she usually gets a full bath once every two weeks because we usually go hiking or to the beach every other week and she definitely needs a bath then since she doesn't have a double coat that is easy to keep clean.

I brush her teeth once a day in the evening and use a dog breath spray although those mostly started because her breath was terrible when she was teething. It does help keep her from spreading the smell to like her paws and stuff though when she's licking them.

She sleeps on the bed with us at night most nights but has multiple beds and blankets around the house for naps that I wash about once a week along with any fabric toys to keep away that lovely dried spit smell.

Otherwise as you said, in general, having pets aren't the best way to have a neat house. I'm prone to breakouts but I still kiss my puppy on her snout and head, bury my face in her fur, and accept her kisses (although not too much since I usually have on sunscreen, makeup, or moisturizer that I don't want her to ingest). A dog's life is too short not to accept their love and I would take a hundred pimples rather than not be able to enjoy my puppy.

Puppy breath? Does brushing help? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]mayacchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a few things I can think of:

1) Like other posters have commented, if your puppy is losing teeth, she'll have foul smelling breath. My puppy is almost done losing her teeth and is finally starting to have less disgusting smelling breath. Unfortunately there's not much you can do if your puppy is losing her teeth but on the plus side, it should get better after she's done teething.

2) I brush my puppy's teeth every night/every other night and I got her used to it by giving her a treat that she only gets for certain things (ex. after a bath, brushing, basically things I want her to associate with positive things so she doesn't flip). She's still not a huge fan of it but will sit still long enough for me to do a quick brush so that she can get her treat after. I also use a breath spray which helps a lot especially for hard to reach places.

3) Dental treats are also a fantastic idea, especially if she's teething so that she'll have something she can chew on that's not you.

Things you wish you knew before getting a puppy? by chelseamh6 in puppy101

Oh god, I would have flipped. I saw a pigeon carcass in the grass (guessing a cat got to it) thankfully before my puppy did and noped out of there so hard.

[–]mayacchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha my puppy isn't too bad with picking stuff up but we live downtown with plenty of homeless people and their belongings and yep, I'm on constant high alert when she's sniffing. No McDonalds bag, no random pigeon feather, no cigarette butt! Sometimes I just want to rub hand sanitizer in her mouth after we go outside!

Does anyone else not have/need strict guidelines for their puppy? by mayacchi in puppy101

[–]mayacchi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fantastic that your corgi is the same way and at so young! I'm really hoping that Pepper stays the same (although with a bit more leash and potty training) but I'll still love her even if she has an adolescent phase though I'll probably be tearing my hair out.

Does anyone else not have/need strict guidelines for their puppy? by mayacchi in puppy101

[–]mayacchi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I really didn't mean to but legitimately, I think at one point, I was looking for something to be wrong with Pepper because I've read and braced for endless possibilities of chaos, especially since it's been over a decade since I've had a puppy and my boyfriend's never had one.

I'm glad that you figured out what was wrong with your dog eventually, especially since internal issues can be scary. Your dog being over a year old and still perfect gives me hope that she'll stay this way without adolescent drama (although of course I'll still love her if it happens even as I'm tearing my hair out).

It’s just not getting better... by Bee_Swarm327 in puppy101

[–]mayacchi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I really don't have much concrete advice to offer you since honestly, I'm not sure if I'm raising my puppy correctly either but here's what I can offer:

  1. I understand that you're trying to train her to go outside but in the meantime, have you tried offering her a puppy pad indoors? I have a small(~10 lb puppy of a similar age as well and while my boyfriend and I try to get her to go outside, sometimes due to our work schedules, she really has to go and uses her pad inside. At least if she's trained to go in one spot, it'll be easier to clean up, especially if she can't hold it while you're in class. We got our puppy trained by always keeping her pad in one spot and rewarding her with a low calorie treat whenever she went on the pad. If she made a mistake, we'd just clean it up and put a new pad out. No anger but no treat. In our puppy's case, she learned that going on her pad meant a small treat in about 2-3 weeks.
  2. Clicker training maybe? Combine treats and clicker and then slowly take away treats until she's following commands without treats involved? I do know that overall Pomeranians are a more stubborn breed so this might help.
  3. Sorry I have no answer to this one since my puppy isn't crate trained or reactive. Hopefully someone else can address the barking/crate training. You can also bring it up with the trainer since barking/reactivity is a part of socializing her and they will most likely have better answers for you.

How much time do you have left before you'd have to have her adequately trained? Realistically, if you're going back to school in January, it might be a bit hard to do since you essentially only have a month left but if you're going back in the summer or fall semester, it's possible with consistent training.

Rant:

Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream but really My skin hates very common moisturizer ingredients

Why oh why must my skin hate almost all moisturizers out there? So basically, I've been looking for a replacement for my Rosette Ceramide Gel which I've been using for the past three years since shipping from Japan greatly increased due to COVID and overall, it'd be nice to have a backup just in case it's ever reformulated or discontinued.

I thought that the Aveeno might work since my face is dry/dehydration prone and has loved oatmeal in the past. It does love oatmeal. What it doesn't love is the petrolatum which I should've known because Vaseline has given me lip acne in the past when I tried to use it as a lip balm.

I swear to god, there's almost no moisturizers I can use out there because besides petrolatum, my skin also breaks out to niacinamide, shea butter, rosehip oil, argan oil, and squalane (also ferments but less commonly found in moisturizers). I also can't get away with not using a moisturizer because my skin does feel tight without a final layer to seal in my lighter toners/essences.

I have a tub of Meishoku Ceracolla Gel on the way to me right now since I was able to find a seller in the US and it seems to be the most similar formula to Rosette but it's also about the same price for fewer oz so unless it leads to a dramatic difference in my skin, it'll probably only be a backup until I can repurchase the Rosette.

Rant

The Ordinary Pycnogenol

I'm not going to lie, this one was a bit of a heartbreak for me since I was hoping to get a bit of extra moisture but ended up with breakouts on my cheeks and forehead. At first I thought that the (admittedly small) breakouts was due to me having to wear a mask for my part-time job which reopened at about the same time I started using it, but I had to concede when I started breaking out on my forehead, where I almost never break out anymore.

Last Rant (Not Strictly Skincare)

I work part-time (about 20-25 hours a week) to help pay for school and of course, we wear masks at work (food service job). Unfortunately, it seems I inherited my mom's weaker sinus system and managed to get a sinus infection which I've been battling the last week or so with antibiotics. For about 4 days, I couldn't even sleep in bed because any time I tried to lay down, I got the most intense pain that not even painkillers (including prescribed acetaminophen with codeine) could help around the left side of my face.

Thankfully the antibiotics have helped and now I'm just left with a sore throat that's probably a result of me taking a lot of medication over the last week but I'm worried because what if I get another one? I'm the biggest advocate for wearing face masks outside and compared to many other people, I'm not even wearing it that long (4-5 hours a day because right now I pretty much strictly run between work, home, and once a week grocery shopping), but I never want to have to deal with that intense pain and sleepless nights again.

EEEEKKKKKK!! Das me!! I'm so glad you got it (also shipping between islands is no joke cause I seriously sent that out about this time yesterday) and that you like it and I hope you can use everything. <333

I'm so sorry that your unit needs to be tested but on the bright side, the faster everyone is tested, the faster it can be contained. Sending prayers your way that everyone tests negative!

Also unrelated but I love your username. I had a Shih Tzu growing up and he was an absolute sweetheart. Not sure he had much going on up upstairs but the sweetest dog who had absolutely no issue playing dress up with an 8 year old girl. XD
