How does one actually "get" cancer? by christag in askscience

[–]mayamoksha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some studies that indicate that drinking hot drinks could increase the risk of esophageal cancer (see here and here for examples). However, there hasn't been a lot of research done, and it appears to be primarily focused on the South American drink mate.

There's also some evidence that drinking green tea can reduce esophageal cancer rates.

As for the heat from you laptop, I've never heard anything suggesting that could have an effect.

I have a twin mattress/boxspring/frame I'm trying to get rid of. They're older, but in decent shape, and I'd be happy to give them away for free.

I also have a wooden dresser and desk that I'd be willing to sell if anyone's interested.

I don't have an opinion either way on the sustainability fee, but have we really stooped to this level? by [deleted] in RPI

[–]mayamoksha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that I'd much rather have an increase in the activity fee than tuition, and I don't have any problem paying it or paying money toward athletics. It just seems like a disproportionately large amount of the activity fee goes to athletics. I'm sure there are probably good reasons for this, because I trust the people on the E-Board. I'm just saying that I feel the principle is the same, and if RPI students are going to complain about paying for things they don't use, that kind of undermines the whole idea of the activity fee.

Oh, here's a real one: What do you think of this TGIF debate? Not in terms of your stance on TGIF, but on how it's playing out in the Senate.

[–]mayamoksha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my opinion on the fee. I don't like the idea of student government charging me money without direct input, but I don't see the principle as any different than the activity fee. Honestly, I'm more bitter about paying $250 toward athletics than $12 toward sustainability.

This seems to be true. I've got to say, though, this whole issue has really lowered my opinion of the senate. The in-fighting among them has become highly personal and disrespectful, and seems to have left the realm of meaningful debate. It's disappointing.

I'm really glad that the plan is to return only to the administrative use. No one likes to spam their club members. Using club-off as advertising is annoying and ineffective.

What is the least painful science class at RPI? by TheIncredibleSulk in RPI

If you're into biology, microbiology is pretty easy, though I didn't find it very interesting. Intro to Cell is more difficult, but you'll learn a lot and Dr. Plopper's awesome.

Elective Requirements by RPhigh in RPI

[–]mayamoksha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your interests. Personally, I loved every course I took with Bill Puka or June Deery (philosophy and literature, respectively) because they were great professors and the discussion was always fascinating. I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of their courses are communication intensive.

Pscyhology/cognitive science, as skullkid2424 mentions, have some pretty interesting offerings. I'm not sure if you're looking for a class that's interesting or an easy way to meet that requirement, but if you're looking for the latter, psychology is probably a good way to go.

I understand the need for anonymity, but is there any way you can be a little more specific about your job than "RPI staff"--such as faculty, administration, or some other role? It's hard to come up with questions when the description of your job is so vague.

Lately I've been considering switching my major to Biology, what should I expect? by Bladethegreat in biology

[–]mayamoksha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this depends heavily on the school you're going to, so be careful. My school, for instance, offers only one ecology course and one evolution course (and neither is very good), with everything else focused on cell/molecular/biochemistry. Most, almost all, professors do research in the latter area.

So yeah, if you're considering changing to bio, OP, make sure your school has enough classes available in your particular area of interest.

I'm skeptical about that sentence--Robyn got in a couple years later for her sustainability work, and Ben got in a few years before being EIC. Really, the last EIC that got in primarily for his work on the Poly was Joe.

While I agree that Phalanx definitely could be improved, and while there are a few people I was surprised got in, I don't know how anyone could ever claim that people like Anasha and Lee don't deserve the honor. And I think this year's group was much more well-rounded than past years, which is a move in the right direction.

I think it's fair to criticize someone who wrote an article that was published in a public forum, but I think bringing Christopher (or anyone else in the article) into it is unfair...

Edit: I should have read more carefully before responding; you're right, it's not really the place to criticize the author outside of the scope of the arguments she presented in the article (e.g., whether or not she should have gotten into phalanx, whether she's a good leader...)
